Kevin John Edusei returns to conduct a program celebrating the flamboyance and wit of two great Hungarian composers, Liszt and Kodály, beginning with Liszt’s symphonic poem, Les Préludes. Liszt wrote this dramatic piece based on poems depicting the heavens, stormy winds and pastoral scenes. Guest soloist Haochen Zhang performs Liszt’s high-spirited First Piano Concerto, which was criticized by his contemporaries for pushing the bounds of taste, but was later embraced by composers like Béla Bartók. Kodály’s Suite from the opera Háry János draws on his deep knowledge of Hungarian folk melodies to depict the tall tales of an imaginative veteran. The orchestra also presents Richard Strauss’ tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, and breathes life into the roguish German folk hero for which it's named.

Austrian conductor Christoph Koncz invites us to a festival of orchestral images. We begin with the overture to Wagner's Meistersinger , which foreshadows all the opera's themes. With its romantic flair and majesty, it celebrates the artist's freedom from established rules. Wagner's father-in-law, Liszt, and his First Concerto allow American pianist Michelle Cann—a Grammy winner in February 2025—to dazzle us with a dazzling display of virtuosity. Pianist Zee Zee (Zhang Zuo) gives a recital inspired by myths, fairy tales, and Romantic literature. Slade Trammell, pianist, M.M., has been heard in concert across the U.S. and in Europe, including local performances with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Roane Choral Society, and appearances in Salzburg, Paris, and Toronto. He studied under pianists Earl Wild, Ruth Slenczynska, and David Brunell. Also a conductor, with many years of study under Serge Fournier, he is a graduate in conducting (with distinction in score reading) of the European American Musical Alliance Summer Institute in Paris. Since 2012, Mr. Trammell has served as pianist for Roane Choral Society. He also serves on faculty at Hiwasee College.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Dearborn Symphony invites you to an evening of music made for falling in love—with rhythm, with movement, and maybe even with each other. Shall We Dance is a romantic, high-spirited night out designed for couples, friends, and anyone looking to celebrate the joy of connection through music and motion.

The concert itself flows with the charm and energy of a night on the town. Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz brings smoldering passion and drama, while Strauss’s Voices of Spring waltz enchants with its elegance—performed live with dancers from Downriver Dance Academy, under the artistic direction of Genrich. Later, tango-inspired rhythms and Latin flair take center stage in Piazzolla’s Libertango, performed in collaboration with the Dearborn Youth Symphony, adding a fresh, youthful spark to the evening.

Almost exactly nine years ago, the Elbphilharmonie organ was played for the first time in a solo concert. Since then, titular organist Iveta Apkalna, who was also at the console back then, has presented ever-expanding organ repertoire with exciting programs—this time including minimal music by Philip Glass and music by organ favorites Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt, and Pēteris Vasks.

In its program, the Amatis Trio follows in the footsteps of Voltaire's Candide, who discovers the complexity of human existence on his travels. Mozart's K. 502 reflects the initial lightness of the literary masterpiece, while subtle harmonic shifts already hint at deeper complexities beneath the surface. The blend of struggle and spiritual triumph in Mendelssohn's Second Piano Trio seems like a metaphor for Candide's path to resilience and enlightenment. Liszt's Tristia, in turn, moves the listener to reflect on their own search for fulfillment in an imperfect world.

The organ world of this concert offers a wealth of evocative colors and magical impressions – and even a few mythical figures play their games. Johannes Skoog, born in Stockholm in 1992, will bring them musically to life on the keys and pedals: He won First Prize at the Canadian International Organ Competition in 2024 and was recently appointed organist to the Swedish royal court. He opens his Bamberg program with Prokofiev's Toccata of 1912, a "devilishly witty" virtuoso piece of classical modernism. Debussy's sensuously shimmering composition, written in 1894, is characterized by an arabesque-like main theme: A faun revels in intoxicating memories of beautiful nymphs on a summer afternoon.

Join pianist and polymath Kirill Gerstein for a program exploring Liszt and Brahms, two Romantic-era luminaries. Celebrated for his “insightful, boldly projected playing” (Chicago Classical Review), Gerstein opens with Liszt’s gem-like Three Petrarch Sonnets and fantastical Dante Sonata. The second half features Brahms’ youthful and impetuous Scherzo and the majestic warmth of his Sonata No. 3.

It was conductor Mariss Jansons who asked Jörg Widmann to compose a concert overture for the performance of Beethoven's 7th and 8th Symphonies. So Widmann wrote for a similar ensemble to Beethoven's at the time, drawing on the timbres and explosiveness of the 7th Symphony. However, the musical elements here appear torn apart – a Beethoven from the shredder. To recall the Seventh's original shock effect, Widmann also includes avant-garde scratching and crackling sounds. This "crazy overture" is great fun.

Under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colburn’s Maestro Ernst H. Katz Chair of Conducting Studies, the Colburn Orchestra brings to life Bruckner’s sweeping “Romantic” Symphony: a vivid narrative of medieval knights, the enchantment of nature, and the thrilling drama of forest hunts. Joining Esa-Pekka on the program are Salonen Conducting Fellows Aleksandra Melaniuk and Mert Yalniz, with Yalniz conducting the world premiere of his own orchestral composition. Lizst’s bold and playful symphonic poem Les Préludes opens the concert.

Trio Seoul was founded in 2022 by Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho, pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, and cellist and Bienen alumnus Brannon Cho. All three are top prize winners and laureates of prestigious international competitions including the Concours musical international de Montréal, the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The trio regularly collaborates with artists in multiple fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists, and its members have appeared as soloists with celebrated orchestras throughout the world. The city of Seoul serves as a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots and artistic intensity.

The American premiere of the MacDowell Piano Concerto No. 2 took place in New York on March 5, 1889, with the composer as the soloist. The same concert also included the American premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The New York Tribune wrote, “It is a splendid composition, so full of poetry, so full of vigor…” In Europe, however, critics complained that the work was, “too Lisztian.” Liszt had been the composer’s friend and a strong promoter of his music. Michael Stephen Brown champions the work with ardor and appropriate virtuosity.

Described by the Guardian as 'a top-ranking virtuoso', Volodos opens this performance with Schubert’s Sonata in A major D959, written during the last months of the composer’s life. He follows this with Robert Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, whose theme is based on a mazurka by Clara Wieck – the composer whom he would eventually marry. Lastly, Volodos will perform his own arrangement of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 13.

Acclaimed British pianist Paul Lewis takes centre stage in this programme of Romantic classics. One of the world’s greatest interpreters of the central European classical repertoire, he’s particularly famed for his performances of Beethoven, notably his landmark recordings of the composer’s piano sonatas. Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won the First Prze at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw. This “Chopin Competition winner can stand proud next to the likes of such illustrious past winners as Pollini, Argerich, and Zimerman,” said the Pianist.

Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, Gold Medalist at the First China International Music Competition, performs works by Bach, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms at his Koerner Hall debut.

Mr. Yun has been hailed as a “poet of the keyboard” (Pianist Magazine) and The Philadelphia Inquirer noted his thrilling performance and “interpretive flashes that point to an emergent big personality: moments of grandness or deep expressivity.” He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2023-24 under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin with Orchestre Métropolitain, following his 2022-23 debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Closing the program is Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a tour-de-force that spotlights every section of the orchestra in a vibrant, folk-infused celebration.

Dante Alighieri's journey through hell and purgatory tells of good and evil, of corrupt politicians and dishonorable popes, and shows us Franz Liszt as an incredibly modern and forward-looking composer. Fifteen years ago, with the recording and release of the Dante Symphony, Martin Haselböck and his Vienna Academy embarked on an epochal undertaking: recording all of Franz Liszt's orchestral works in the so-called "Sound of Weimar" on period instruments in Raiding. The project has been completed, and the international press response has been enormous and overwhelming. Together with the Vienna Chormädchen, this performance promises to be a unique experience.

Rachel Cheung opens our new Sunday Piano Series with a programme of imagination, dramatic contrasts and virtuosity. The opening of Beethoven’s Moonlight sonata is probably the most famous single movement he ever wrote, and the sonata itself is a masterpiece, described by Beethoven as ‘like a fantasy’, with the contrasting movements ending in a fast and furious presto. Schumann’s eight characterful pieces alternate between his vying personas, the dreamy and romantic Florestan and the active and passionate Eusebius. Finally, Liszt’s showpiece was based on Gounod’s opera and combines his fascination with the Faust legend with a way to include the latest operatic news in his flamboyant recitals.

The folk songs that Franz Liszt heard during his childhood in Raiding, then part of Hungary, remained with him throughout his life. They also provided the melodic material for the Hungarian Melodies and the "Magyar Rhapsodiak" for piano, which he composed during a brief return to Pest in the winter of 1839/40. It was only 13 years later that he published 19 of the results of these national studies in what he himself called "a handsomely comprehensive volume of Hungarian rhapsodies." The composer, flautist, and conductor Franz Doppler, whom Liszt had met in Weimar in 1854, arranged six of these rhapsodies for orchestra, and Martin Haselböck, with his Vienna Academy, would bring all the colors of this dazzling orchestration to life. In his Hungarian Rhapsodies, Liszt created a stirring monument to the Hungarian people's longing for freedom. Like the Roma of Hungary, he saw himself as a homeless person, but at the same time as a European who intervened, commented critically, and simultaneously moved and built new things. As sharp-tongued as ever, Heinrich Heine remarked: "It goes without saying that such a restless mind, driven into confusion by all the needs and doctrines of the age, that feels the need to concern itself with all the needs of humanity and likes to poke its nose into all the pots in which God is cooking up the future, that Franz Liszt cannot be a quiet pianist for quiet citizens and comfortable sleepyheads."
