Described by the Guardian as 'a top-ranking virtuoso', Volodos opens this performance with Schubert’s Sonata in A major D959, written during the last months of the composer’s life. He follows this with Robert Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, whose theme is based on a mazurka by Clara Wieck – the composer whom he would eventually marry. Lastly, Volodos will perform his own arrangement of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 13.

Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, Gold Medalist at the First China International Music Competition, performs works by Bach, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms at his Koerner Hall debut.

Mr. Yun has been hailed as a “poet of the keyboard” (Pianist Magazine) and The Philadelphia Inquirer noted his thrilling performance and “interpretive flashes that point to an emergent big personality: moments of grandness or deep expressivity.” He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2023-24 under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin with Orchestre Métropolitain, following his 2022-23 debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr. Yun has appeared recently with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, Hamilton (ON) Philharmonic, and Rhode Island Philharmonic; outside North America, he has recently appeared with Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

The satirical epic poem "La Divina Commedia" ("The Divine Comedy") is considered one of the most important works of world literature and served as a source of inspiration for Liszt's symphony. Dante Alighieri's journey through hell and purgatory tells of good and evil, of corrupt politicians and dishonorable popes, and shows us Franz Liszt as an incredibly modern and forward-looking composer. Fifteen years ago, with the recording and release of the Dante Symphony, Martin Haselböck and his Vienna Academy embarked on an epochal undertaking: recording all of Franz Liszt's orchestral works in the so-called "Sound of Weimar" on period instruments in Raiding. The project has been completed, and the international press response has been enormous and overwhelming. Together with the Vienna Chormädchen, this performance promises to be a unique experience.

Rachel Cheung opens our new Sunday Piano Series with a programme of imagination, dramatic contrasts and virtuosity. The opening of Beethoven’s Moonlight sonata is probably the most famous single movement he ever wrote, and the sonata itself is a masterpiece, described by Beethoven as ‘like a fantasy’, with the contrasting movements ending in a fast and furious presto. Schumann’s eight characterful pieces alternate between his vying personas, the dreamy and romantic Florestan and the active and passionate Eusebius. Finally, Liszt’s showpiece was based on Gounod’s opera and combines his fascination with the Faust legend with a way to include the latest operatic news in his flamboyant recitals.

The folk songs that Franz Liszt heard during his childhood in Raiding, then part of Hungary, remained with him throughout his life. They also provided the melodic material for the Hungarian Melodies and the "Magyar Rhapsodiak" for piano, which he composed during a brief return to Pest in the winter of 1839/40. It was only 13 years later that he published 19 of the results of these national studies in what he himself called "a handsomely comprehensive volume of Hungarian rhapsodies." The composer, flautist, and conductor Franz Doppler, whom Liszt had met in Weimar in 1854, arranged six of these rhapsodies for orchestra, and Martin Haselböck, with his Vienna Academy, would bring all the colors of this dazzling orchestration to life. In his Hungarian Rhapsodies, Liszt created a stirring monument to the Hungarian people's longing for freedom. Like the Roma of Hungary, he saw himself as a homeless person, but at the same time as a European who intervened, commented critically, and simultaneously moved and built new things. As sharp-tongued as ever, Heinrich Heine remarked: "It goes without saying that such a restless mind, driven into confusion by all the needs and doctrines of the age, that feels the need to concern itself with all the needs of humanity and likes to poke its nose into all the pots in which God is cooking up the future, that Franz Liszt cannot be a quiet pianist for quiet citizens and comfortable sleepyheads."

"More light!" – these were supposedly the last words of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, on whose two-part tragedy Faust Franz Liszt's Faust Symphony , premiered in 1857 on the occasion of the erection of the Goethe-Schiller Monument in Weimar , is based. The three character portraits of the composition for orchestra, tenor, and male choir are each dedicated to one of the drama's three main characters: Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles.

This programme has it all! Istanbul-born pianist Hüseyin Sermet not only plays Franz Liszt’s demanding B minor Sonata at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, but also the »Petites Fantaisies« by French composer Charles-Valentin Alkan. His ludicrously virtuosic works even frightened Liszt, the lion of the keyboard, but Sermet can confidently go the whole hog – after all, he has won several awards for his recordings of compositions by Liszt and Alkan.

To kick off the season, the hr Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with the European Central Bank, invites you to the Europa Open Air concert series. In the unique atmosphere on the banks of the Main River in Frankfurt, you can expect another captivating summer concert evening with chief conductor Alain Altinoglu. Up to 20,000 visitors regularly enjoy the hr Symphony Orchestra's summer concerts on the banks of the Main. As always, supported by the Elisabethen Quelle Foundation, this year's program features popular orchestral works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Aram Khachaturian, and Gustav Holst, which have also enjoyed worldwide success in film. In addition, a rousing concerto for two pianos by Francis Poulenc and the renowned "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" by Franz Liszt will be performed. Earlier in the evening, the hr Big Band, featuring Wolfgang Haffner and special guest Shantel, will provide the first musical highlights and create a lively atmosphere on the banks of the Main. 98th annual 'Les Préludes' performance featuring the World Youth Wind Symphony conducted by Steven D. Davis. Experience a powerful, 98-year-old tradition as the students of Interlochen Arts Camp stage the perennial end-of-summer celebration, “Les Préludes.” Students from all three of the Camp’s high school instrumental ensembles—the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen Philharmonic, and World Youth Wind Symphony—unite with the Interlochen Summer Dance Ensemble for a poignant multidisciplinary performance of Franz Liszt’s evocative tone poem, “Les Préludes.”

When in Rome, do as the Romans do! Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni makes his LA Phil debut in an evening of Roman delights and more. Berlioz’s dashing overture kicks off the festivities with an airy fluttering of strings and charming English horn melodies, while Respighi’s colorful Pines of Rome offers the sounds of children frolicking in the groves, Gregorian chants echoing through the catacombs, and nightingales singing to the moon. As peaceful as it may sound, the Pines nonetheless is a grand and fast-paced flight, bookended by glistening brass fanfares that leave audiences awestruck.

Schubert, who died young, had no idea while composing this sonata that it would be his penultimate piano sonata. Yet the A major sonata stands out for its poetic – some say prescient – ​​otherness. The piano recital begins accordingly lyrically and sensitively. Schumann's impetuous and sensitive Davidsbündlertänze glide and leap across the keyboard in rich contrast, ultimately evolving into exuberant Lisztian virtuosity. The Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos presents his three-part recital in the Forum am Schlosspark, with which he recently thrilled the Salzburg Festival audience, with a consummate performance. "Volodos wouldn't be Volodos if Liszt's sinfully difficult musical text weren't too easy for him. He needs his own, even more difficult version," says BR-Klassik, describing the keyboardist. In addition to his technical brilliance, for which he has been celebrated since the early 1990s, he also knows how to sensitively bring out the romantic nuances.

A true musical visionary, the Greek maestro—who has previously led the Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared at the Edinburgh and Salzburg Festivals, the BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Covent Garden Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera—fascinates both audiences and the musicians he conducts from the podium. With »AnnyTime StoryTime«, the internationally acclaimed pianist Anny Hwang invites the audience to a captivating musical storytelling experience. Each work in her programme unfolds its own story – sometimes full of passion, sometimes with gentle poetry, always imbued with depth and expressiveness. Ballads already existed in literature, but Chopin set himself the task of realising them in classical music. To celebrate this kind of narrative, the programme opens with Chopin’s lyrical Ballade No. 2, followed by Beethoven’s dramatic Appassionata Sonata, which is one of the most impressive works of piano literature in terms of its intensity.

Yokohama-born Sachiko Furuhata made her debut in 2017 at Carnegie Hall New York to standing ovations. Since then, she has made guest appearances at various major concert halls such as the San Francisco Herbst Theatre, the Edinburgh Usher Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Hamburg Laeiszhalle. As a soloist she has played with orchestras such as the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra or the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

For French composers like Ravel and Chaminade, Spain was a wonderland of the imagination – but for a Spaniard like Manel de Falla, it was something altogether wilder and more real. Charles Owen – a born storyteller at the piano – takes us south, for a concert filled with both shadows and sunshine.

A visit by the most talented young artists from Georgia has long been a regular feature of the festival's summer program. This year, the renowned Paliashvili Music School in Tbilisi is sending two of its very young talents to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—Miriam Narimanidze and Avtandil Vartagava—to demonstrate their piano skills. They will present a colorful and diverse program, both solo and duet, at the Nakenstorf Art Barn.

Our summer concert will take place at Bramshaw Village Hall, Lyndhurst. Conducted by Simon Wilkins, the orchestra will be playing a selection of music from the arts.

At this concert we are delighted to be supporting local children’s charity Honeypot. Since 1996 Honeypot has been working to enhance the lives of young carers aged 5-12 years by providing respite breaks and a holistic range of services. In the UK nationwide, they give young carers a break from demanding and stressful responsibilities at home and provide a safe, nurturing environment where children at risk can develop their full potential.

Franz Liszt – as a sound magician, he opens the gates to a transcendental world in which the soul can wander through landscapes. In Liszt's creations, the search for the absolute, a striving for divine harmony that exceeds human experience, becomes apparent. His music is a reflection of life itself, with all its ups and downs, its dreams and tragedies. Through the keyboard of his compositions, Liszt expresses the entire spectrum of human emotions: from ecstatic joy to dark melancholy. The fascination and mystery of Franz Liszt manifests itself in his compositional as well as personal extravagance and excess. The aesthetic romanticism and the expressive revolt of his piano and orchestral works are fed by his (life) experiences as a citizen of the world, fantasist and visionary. As a 13-year-old he impressed with the one-act opera "Don Sanche ou Le château d'amour", in which he took up the then popular fashion of French compositions by Meyerbeer or those of Italian ones by Rossini. As a piano virtuoso he broke the boundaries of pianistic conventions and set new standards, especially with his piano and orchestral transcriptions. These paraphrases take up a large space in Liszt's oeuvre, as he not only transcribes them one-to-one, but transforms them into romantic sound paintings. His favourite composers were Richard Wagner, Frédéric Chopin and Ludwig van Beethoven. In the festival play "The Ruins of Athens" op. 113, Beethoven celebrates the resurrection of Hellenistic culture in a Greece occupied by the Ottomans - Liszt used this to create a fantasy based on motifs from Beethoven's original for piano and orchestra. The year 1847 marked a decisive turning point in Franz Liszt's life. Up until then he had travelled to every musically important corner of Europe as a piano virtuoso, but now he began a second career as a composer and created a new musical genre with the "symphonic poem". His twelfth, "The Ideals" - based on a poem by Schiller - can be seen as a kind of meditation on the nature of art and the role of the artist in society. Liszt saw himself as a mediator between the earthly and the divine, between the visible and the invisible. May one feel the longing for the infinite in Liszt's tones and recognise the power in music that connects us all.
