London Phoenix Orchestra present a programme of English music to open their 2024/25 season. The centrepiece is Elgar’s majestic Symphony No. 1, of which the composer wrote “There is no program beyond a wide experience of human life with a great charity (love) and a massive hope in the future”. Brilliant young cellist Ben Tarlton joins the orchestra for Walton’s magical Cello Concerto. Ethel Smyth’s stirring overture to her most famous opera, The Wreckers.

Acclaimed violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins returns to perform Bruch’s Concerto No. 1 for Violin in G minor. Dame Ethel Smythe’s early 20th century rarity Overture to The Wreckers and the opulent Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz will also be performed.

One of today’s most lauded Wagnerian sopranos, Christine Goerke traverses stunning highlights of the composer’s operatic canon at this not-to-be missed concert. Tristan and Isolde delves into the mysteries of love and death as Isolde sings herself into rapturous oblivion. David Danzmayr also leads the Oregon Symphony in orchestral highlights from The Valkyrie and Twilight of the Gods. In the spine-tingling “Ride of the Valkyries,” the warrior maidens ride their flying steeds as they carry fallen heroes to Valhalla; and you’ll be enthralled by Siegfried’s heroic Rhine Journey and gripping Funeral March. Surrender to the drama and passion of Wagner’s music.
