Love of my life – Nils Landgren & friends

Berwaldhallen

A welcome guest at the Festspielhaus for years, Nils Landgren is one of the defining personalities of European jazz. For his 70th birthday and after 50 years on stage, he is fulfilling his long-cherished wish: performing concerts with a symphony orchestra. The arrangements are by Vince Mendoza, a Grammy-winning American composer and one of the most renowned orchestral arrangers of our time.

His trademark: the bright red trombone. His sound: powerful, groovy, unique. The Swedish trombonist and singer Nils Landgren – also known as Mr. Red Horn – has shaped the European jazz scene since the mid-1990s. This is thanks to his versatility, creative curiosity, and his ever-present joy in making music. Now, this bundle of energy turns 70 and celebrates the milestone with a special concert. Joining him are members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and jazz luminaries such as saxophonist Magnus Lindgren, pianist Michael Wollny, and singers China Moses and Viktoria Tolstoy.

Guest Concert

Alte Oper

‘Come on in’ is the warm invitation from the Alte Oper, aimed in particular at people who have never attended a classical music concert at the Alte Oper, or perhaps not for a long time. The offer at a fixed price includes not only a concert visit, but also exclusive participation in the Newcomer Lounge one hour before the concert begins: presenter Bastian Korff provides insights into the evening's works and introduces people from the concert area who talk about their passion for music and their profession. There will be an opportunity to chat with other newcomers during the interval.

Welcome: Nils Landgren

Mr Red Horn turns 70 - and gives himself and his audience a present: Nils Landgren fulfils his heart's desire and organises a concert evening with a large classical orchestra. Composer Vince Mendoza has arranged the best songs from the career of the busy Swedish trombonist, composer, producer and singer for a live performance in a symphonic setting. A new sonic dimension emerges from the nucleus of the trio formation. Nils Landgren is already looking forward to the sonic experience: "The powerful embrace of a symphony orchestra is the greatest thing for a musician like me, who comes from a small village in Sweden. It's something I dreamed of as a young man, and I hope my experience will be yours too!

For many years, the man with the red trombone dreamed of celebrating a musical Christmas in the company of good friends and with a selection of very different Christmas carols that he had encountered over the course of his career. In 2006 the time had come, and because "Christmas With My Friends" was soon considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the most beautiful Christmas records ever recorded, several editions have since been produced. This format now also takes place with great regularity at the Rheingau Music Festival and attracts not only true jazz fans, but a broad audience during Advent to the beautiful Kurhaus Wiesbaden. With his musical confidants Jonas Knutsson, Johan Norberg, Clas Lassbo and the four singers Ida Sand, Sharon Dyall, Jessica Pilnäs and Jeanette Köhn, Nils Landgren ventures into traditional songs and cover versions of exquisite Christmas carols in this concert.

The Radio Jazz Group – now finally in Gothenburg – together with their artistic director Nils Landgren in a concert entirely dedicated to the legendary trombonist Eje Thelin and his music.

The concert's main number is the suite "Raggruppamento", a kind of closing of Eje Thelin's musical life. Eje's unique, virtuoso and melodious trombone playing is carried on here by Nils Landgren - a very worthy heir who himself found great inspiration in his meetings with Eje and was in the orchestra when the Radiojazzgruppen last played the music in the late 80s. The music is consistently lyrical and very well composed and goes from ballads to beats to real swing. Joy of playing all the way during an evening that will leave an imprint in jazz history.

Uncovering commonalities rather than emphasizing differences: In a bold sonic experiment, soprano Jeanette Köhn, an exquisite jazz ensemble led by trombonist Nils Landgren, and the chamber choir of the Wiesbaden Bach Choir come together to place well-known works by Bach and other Baroque composers in a new context. Their artistic tools: a sense of style, sensitivity, mutual listening, and, last but not least, masterful mastery of instrument and voice. The result: a sonic revelation for jazz and classical music lovers alike. Rarely has crossover been experienced so pure and clear!

This year, the party atmosphere will be on again when the Funk Unit, led by Nils Landgren and his red trombone, rocks the Schafhof stud farm. Following their concert two years ago on the lake stage in the impressive gardens of Vollrads Castle, these dedicated musicians are back this year at the Rheingau Music Festival, where they have already warmed up their audiences several times in the past. As always, brilliant brass sections alternate with ecstatic solos, and with danceable beats, brilliant tempo increases, cool vocals, and powerful melodies, this dream team of sweaty funk workers gets the crowd going. This band celebrates the groove – join in the fun!

Michael Wollny has long been one of the most adventurous figures on the European jazz scene. In this programme, the pianist revisits four of his musical projects, each exploring different styles, collaborations and sound worlds. In his solo Winterreise, he reimagines Schubert’s famous song cycle as darkly Romantic jazz improvisations.
