Birds inform us about our environment, marking the seasons and playing their part in nature’s cycles. They inspire us in art, in folklore and in music where bird mimicry has existed worldwide throughout time. In traditional Gaelic culture there are numerous bird mimicry songs which blur the lines between birdsong, music and speech as well as rich bird-related folklore. In these times of ecological crisis, bird numbers are in decline. The tragedy affects the whole cycle and we feel the loss in countless ways.

Singer, composer and arranger Héloïse Werner deserves to be known as a force of nature, such is her power to transform and reimagine music from the past and bring it into harmonious relationship with the music of today. Her latest programme reaches back to O rosa bella, a gem from the mid-1400s attributed to John Dunstaple, and music by the 15th-century Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez, and forward to the French soprano’s own work for voices and cellos.

Abel Selaocoe is a boundary-breaking South African cellist who’s redefining what classical music can be. This remarkable artist moves effortlessly between musical worlds, weaving together Western classical traditions with the rich musical heritage of Africa. He released his second album, Hymns of Bantu, this past spring, and at Caramoor Selaocoe will perform a program that includes New York premieres of new Caramoor co-commissions by Michel van der Aa, Ben Nobuto, and Selaocoe himself, as well as works by Colin Alexander and Kit Downes and excerpts from Bach cello suites. His passion for making classical music accessible to everyone shines through in every note. Prepare for a concert that will challenge your expectations and open your ears to new possibilities.

Pierre Boulez catapulted himself to the forefront of music pioneers in 1955 with his chamber cantata »Le marteau sans maître« (The Hammer Without a Master). Top young talents such as Ema Nikolovska and Sean Shibe, both Elbphilharmonie FAST LANE artists, juxtapose the Boulez with works by the next generation and the generation after that as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival with the motto »Future«: »12 Caprices« by James Dillon and »Bel Canto« by Cassandra Miller, which is dedicated to the opera diva Maria Callas.
