In MacMillan's "A New Song," a setting of Psalm 96, the choral voices, singing a new day to the Lord, build upon a sustained pedal point, which arguably expresses the life-giving foundation of the earth, where the "primordial light" dwells (heard in Mahler's setting). In this exclusive concert, RSNO Chorus presents a glorious concert of 20th-century choral works. Poulenc’s Gloria is one of contrasts; he said while composing, ‘I had in mind some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day’.  Alongside soprano Polly Beck, the Chorus will take you through the ebbs and flows of this celebrated work. Concluding with the illuminating sounds of Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, this evening will leave you in the warm embrace of a hundred voices.

The final concert will open with Ad Matrem, Henryk Gorecki’s sacred work for soprano, mixed chorus, and orchestra. Based on the text of the 13th century hymn, Stabat Mater Dolorosa, this piece is almost a symphonic poem. Lux Aeterna, by Morten Lauridsen, is a choral work fashioned on texts from several different Latin sources, including the Requiem mass, with each movement containing a reference to light and all it connotes. The concert and festival will come to a fitting end with Rite of Spring, Stravinsky’s evocation of the Slavic folk spirit, with its violent sacrificial dance and extraordinary elemental power.

Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. She has collaborated with today’s most important composers, conductors, and orchestras, creating a remarkable collection of new violin repertoire for future generations, including Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto written for her in 2021, which received a 2024 Grammy® Award nomination for her recording with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Meyers’ CAMA recital debut program will include a premiere of Philip Glass’s New Chaconne, as well as Márquez’s Danzón No.2 in a new arrangement by the composer. Anne Akiko Meyers will play the exquisite 1741 “ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù, considered by many to be the finest sounding violin in existence for its powerfully luxuriant sound and mint state of preservation. Joining Anne Akiko Meyers is Italian pianist Fabio Bidini, a distinguished faculty member at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

This concert will feature works by American composers. On the program will be the well-known and endearing work by Randall Thompson, “Frostiana”, which sets seven poems by Robert Frost to music. Emma Lou Diemer, who recently passed away, wrote “Three Madrigals”, a work set to three Shakespearean texts. To round out the program, the chorus will sing two works by groundbreaking composer Florence Price, “Praise the Lord” and “Resignation”, Ola Gjeilo’s haunting setting of “Ubi Caritas, and  Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on this Shining Night” and “Dirait-on!”  Organist Joshua Ehlebracht will perform a special prelude as a part of the concert which begins at 4 pm.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale opens the 2024-2025 season with Sing Joyfully | 60th Anniversary Celebration Concert, which features a cappella pieces from the Renaissance to present day. The concert opens with William Byrd’s ebullient Sing Joyfully, and the Chorale will take Byrd at his word by joyfully singing choral showpieces by Anton Bruckner, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla. The evening's program is a celebration of the wind repertoire, featuring the cherished Robert Reynolds transcription of Morten Lauridsen’s choral setting of "O magnum mysterium" as its centerpiece. The performance will also showcase works by Egil Hovland and Joan Tower, culminating in a piece by Northwestern alumnus Michael Martin, a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra trumpet section. His "Lontano: Symphony for Wind Ensemble," dedicated to Mallory Thompson and the ensemble, was premiered by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 2016 and returns to captivate audiences once more.

Di Grazia, boasts a membership of approximately 70-80 auditioned singers per semester, with student, faculty, and staff representatives from across the Claremont Colleges. Where there is darkness, we seek to illuminate the spirit with eternal light. In Lux Aeterna, (Eternal Light), the spellbindingly rapturous work premiered by the Los Angeles Master Chorale in 1997, Lauridsen created a rich and intensely moving work that sparked a renaissance of choral music throughout the world. Paired with this masterpiece will be a world premiere by Billy Childs – one of the world’s most celebrated jazz pianists and composers – reuniting the Chorale and brilliant violin virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers along with the Billy Childs Jazz/Chamber Ensemble and The Lyris Quartet

The VSO wouldn’t be the organization we are today without the artistic vision and leadership of VSO Chorus founder Robert De Cormier. This tribute concert is our small way of thanking him for his musical service to Vermonters and the VSO.
The first half of the concert will feature the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of Jose Daniel Flores-Caraballo, who is making his conducting debut with the VSO. Los Angeles-based composer Morton Lauridsen (b. 1943) wrote Lux Aeterna following the death of his mother in 1997, and the text for the piece is based on various references to light from sacred Latin texts.
The first half is anchored by Robert De Cormier’s own composition for chorus and orchestra: Legacy. De Cormier composed this piece in 1981 as a memorial for his son. This performance marks the first time the VSO has ever performed the work.
After intermission, VSO Music Director Jaime Laredo takes the stage to lead the orchestra in Schubert’s ninth symphony, aptly nicknamed “The Great.” Widely regarded as Schubert’s supreme masterpiece, this is an extremely challenging piece to perform, due to the endurance and technique required–particularly among the strings and woodwinds. In fact, orchestras refused to play the symphony in Paris and London when Felix Mendelssohn attempted to program it in the late-1830’s.<

From the passionate nationalism of Finlandia to the radiant serenity of Lux Aeterna, this program journeys from dramatic Nordic landscapes to luminous choral transcendence. Along the way, Forsyth’s Viola Concerto and Grieg’s beloved piano concerto add Romantic fire and virtuosity.
