The Folk Opera House will be the arena for Antonio Vivaldi's baroque opera Olympiaden. Here, athletes and artistic souls compete side by side in a pulsating and sporty drama of confusion – under the influence of big politics, sensual confusion and heartbreaking trials of friendship . Olympiaden is directed by the all-round artist Charlotte Engelkes.

In Olympiad , forbidden love, mistaken identities, murder plots and missing siblings come together in a musical showdown filled with adrenaline and movement. The plot revolves around the prince of Crete, Licida" class="css-u850">Licida, a charming but untrained rookie in the arena of love and sport. In order to win the heart of Princess Aristea, he is faced with the match of his life. He asks his well-trained friend, Megacle, to compete in his place. Megacle accepts the sporting challenge, unaware that he is about to compete away his own fiancé. At the same time, Licida's neglected fiancée Argena appears and things heat up both in the competition arena and in her emotional life. But anything can happen and everything can turn around - it is only in the final that it is decided.

The Olympiad

The immortal, impossible love story told from a different perspective. When Mats Ek interprets Shakespeare's classic, the complex conflict is seen through Juliet's eyes.  

Julia & Romeo , in Ek's characteristic interpretation, has become a modern classic about family, love and the fight for freedom. Set to Tchaikovsky's music, arranged by Anders Högstedt, the work has been a success worldwide since its premiere in 2013 when it was created forRoyal Ballet

«What is our life? A game! Good and evil are merely dreams, work and honesty just lies,» Hermann fatalistically concludes in Pique Dame, as he faces his end at the gaming table. Based on Pushkin’s novella, Tchaikovsky paints a picture of a world dominated by economic inequality and the law that dictates only the strongest survive. Hermann must live up to the social standing of his lover Lisa at any cost; he hopes to gain wealth through the Countess’s cursed card secret. But his hope for happiness vanishes in a spiral of obsession that drags Hermann into the abyss. Doris Soffel returns as the Countess in Sam Brown’s production. Elena Guseva takes on the role of Lisa, while Arsen Soghomonyan makes his house debut as Hermann; both have performed the roles on stages from Milan to New York. Stéphane Degout and Alexey Markov, two great baritones of our time, appear as Prince Yeletsky and Count Tomsky, respectively. The musical direction is by the Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits.

Choreographer Mats Ek seized the earthbound power of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring . Fueling his unique, highly theatrical style, he created an exceptional, reworked version of the piece for the Opéra de Lyon Ballet and full Orchestra. This thrilling event starts off with the gloriously vibrating incantations deployed in Sharon Eyal's House.

The Lyon Opera Ballet recreates two mythical pieces from the contemporary repertoire: House and The Rite of Spring , where rhythm is at the helm.

Although nearly thirty years and distinct approaches to choreographic writing separate The Rite of Spring (1984) and House (2011), both pieces share a certain sense of collective vertigo, echoing ancient rituals. This is the heart of The Rite of Spring , originally choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky and reinterpreted here by the Swedish choreographer Mats Ek, which retains Igor Stravinsky's score intact. This version—reworked in 2022—is characterized by a dance that is both rigorous and eruptive, where virtuoso leaps, sweeping gestures, and combative postures coexist. The opening piece, House , an emblematic work by Sharon Eyal, is guided by the pulse of techno music. In it, the choreographer deploys her unique vocabulary, imbued with club dances and a technique inherited from classical ballet. A hypnotic tour de force where bodies undulate and unfold in a perpetual game of imbalances.
