In the ever-changing world of musical research and performance, timbre is often seen as a unique imprint that characterizes each performer or instrument. However, recent studies highlight the limitations of this essentialist conception, emphasizing that timbre is rather a product of performative practice, musical and cultural context. Thus, timbre, while expressive, is not an entity isomorphic to identity, but a vehicle capable of communicating various identities, whether authentic or constructed.
