After Christopher Cerrone’s The Insects Became Magnetic – a piece first prompted by the noise of computer speaker feedback and the idea that something beautiful could come from an otherwise uncomfortable sound – Roderick Cox is joined by the 2024–25 Terence Judd-Hallé Award winner, Giorgi Gigashvili for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21, which was completed a mere four weeks after his Piano Concerto No.20. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, ranked as one of his best, provides an emotive and impassioned finale.

Inspired by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s classic story, In A Grove is a haunting meditation on the impossibility of truth and the subjectivity of memory and perception. Set in a ghost forest in the aftermath of a wildfire in the Pacific Northwest, this searing adaptation plunges the listener progressively deeper into the ever more fallible regions of the human heart, interrogating how we see, hear, remember and believe.

Flutist and program curator Catherine Gregory, percussionist Ian Rosenbaum, and soprano Ariadne Greif, explore the relationship of sound, breath, and life through a collection of newly written miniatures by a diverse array of composers. The human voice and percussion join the flute to fashion a trio of the world’s oldest instruments in this theatrically conceived program, Just Breath(e).

Works by Timo Andres, Clarice Assad, Kinan Azmeh, Juhi Bansal, Viet Cuong, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, Diane Monroe and Matthew Evan Taylor are intertwined with specially arranged works by Raven Chacon, Chris Cerrone, and Kevin Puts that play on the same theme.

Experience an evening of exceptional chamber music as the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra makes its European debut at the Whyte Recital Hall. This benefit concert, in support of the Irish Heart Foundation, features a compelling program of works for clarinet and string quartet. The performance includes the European premiere of a piece by Christopher Cerrone, the world premiere of a composition by Emma O’Halloran, and a classic work by Johannes Brahms. 

The ensemble, based in Los Angeles and recognized globally for its innovative approach, brings together a talented group of musicians: Benjamin Mitchell on clarinet, Luke Hsu and Ann Miller on violins, Neasa Ni Bhriain on viola, and Rainer Crosett on cello. Their collaboration promises a rich and dynamic musical experience, highlighted by the new work from Emma O’Halloran, generously supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.

Teaching Artists Showcase

Join us for an enchanting evening of chamber music at the Music Academy of the West's Salon Series I. This intimate concert series, set in the beautiful Lehmann Hall, offers a unique opportunity to experience music in a salon setting, reminiscent of living room concerts of the past. Tito Muñoz leads The Phoenix Symphony in two works by Richard Strauss, his witty tone poem Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, and his aptly-named Four Last Songs, a noble statement about a life well lived, featuring radiant soprano Maria Valdes as soloist. The dynamic pianist Conrad Tao joins the orchestra for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, a pinnacle of the repertoire as well as the final work for piano and orchestra that Beethoven performed personally. Opening the program is Christopher Cerrone’s The Age of Wire and String, a six-part orchestral suite that Cerrone composed especially for his good friend Tito Muñoz to premiere.

For the first time in decades, the monumental Symphony No. 7 by Anton Bruckner will be performed by the Louisville Orchestra. Bruckner seemed to become a composer of symphonies overnight after hearing the music of Richard Wagner for the first time. Following the epic scale of Wagner’s operas and seemingly trying to reach a level beyond Beethoven’s Ninth, Bruckner wrote for huge forces and explored a soundscape that ranged from hushed mystery to terrifying. As the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians writes, “Despite a general debt to Beethoven and Wagner, the ‘Bruckner Symphony’ is a unique conception, not only because of the individuality of its spirit and its materials but even more because of the absolute originality of its formal processes.”

x2 Series: Franz Schubert Quintet in C Major

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a program made up entirely of world premieres written by composers during the pandemic and dedicated specifically to Cooke. Together with pianist Kirill Kuzmin, Cooke shines a light on the hopes, fears, and observations of living through an unprecedented time, featuring the brightest compositional talents in music today.

In this immersive outdoor premiere, GRAMMY Award-winning composer Christopher Cerrone traces how people and things change — slowly, with determination and joy. The work begins with a processional: Sandbox Percussion and the Young People's Chorus of New York City move through the Sunken Garden, weaving among the audience before finding their places. From there, the piece unfolds as a gradual revelation — the choristers sing alongside the percussionists, at times lending their voices to guide and shape the music, as a single phrase slowly comes into focus: the only way is through. Inspired by the first year of Cerrone's son's life, the work reaches beyond autobiography toward something more universal — the experience of having come through something hard, and the recognition that this is simply how we move forward. Throughout, the audience is free to move through the Sunken Garden.
