But Bizet’s opera soon began its triumphal march, becoming a myth of modern times. To this day, «Carmen» fascinates audiences with its relentless drama and the elemental power of its melodies. Andreas Homoki’s production pays homage to the place where the opera was created, the Opéra comique in Paris.

The final concert of the Summer Festival begins with Mozart's "Jupiter Symphony," whose final movement impressed later composers at least as much as that of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. While Mozart's "Jupiter" shines brightly, his C minor Mass casts many shadows. This is precisely why the unfinished choral work is a secret Mozart favorite of many music lovers—powerful enough for an unforgettable finale.

At the chamber music evenings with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and his musician friends, you'll get closer to the artists than ever before. The rows of chairs are arranged directly around the musicians on the Festspielhaus stage: This allows you to watch Yannick Nézet-Séguin's fingers as he sits down at the piano (a rare occurrence in public!). The program includes Schumann's Piano Quartet, whose slow movement is considered one of the most beautiful works of the Romantic period. Songs by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will then be performed.

The Mozart operas he performed at the Festspielhaus have all been released as CDs by Deutsche Grammophon. Now, Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the master's Requiem and his most famous symphony. Mozart's mysteriously masked commissioner of the Requiem contributed greatly to its legend. The fact that the composer composed a requiem mass on his own deathbed – this fateful overlap became the goal and climax of Hollywood director Milos Forman's famous "Amadeus" film.

Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin. Baritone Igor Golovatenko reprises his portrayal of the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph).

Tchaikovsky's many moods – tender, grand, melancholic – are given free rein in Eugene Onegin . The opera is based on Pushkin's iconic verse novel. In a similar way, Tchaikovsky took Western European opera traditions and transformed them into an authentic and indisputably Russian work.

At the center of the opera is the young Tatyana, who develops from a sentimental teenager to a perfect woman in one of the most compelling character developments in opera history. Eugene Onegin had its world premiere at the Maly Theatre in Moscow in 1879, with students from the Moscow Conservatory. In 1881, it had its professional premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

In a village community that holds firm to archaic customs, the young hunter Max must pass a marksmanship test so he may marry his sweetheart, Agathe. Of all times now when his shooting has been very much below par! Carl Maria von Weber and his librettist Friedrich Kind fluctuate between ghost story, fairy tale, fortune play and interplay between heaven and hell. The plot centres around a diabolical ritual in the “Wolf's Glen”, where a pact is made with Samiel to cast magic bullets that never miss their target. Its composer declared that the opera was celebrated by its world premiere audience in Berlin in 1821 with the, “most incredible enthusiasm”. In the decades that followed, the piece, at the time considered nature-oriented and traditional-romantic, swiftly became one of the most performed operas on German stages. And little wonder it was: In an age with a popular yearning for cultural, national identification opportunities, Der Freischütz offered a projection surface for an ideal community. So what about this opera appeals to director Dmitri Tcherniakov today?
