Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists. Winner of a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, and the Avery Fisher Prize, Denk was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denk returns frequently to Carnegie Hall and in recent seasons has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as on tour with Academy St. Martin in the Fields, and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition may have inspired more arrangements than any other piece in the classical canon, but this performance eschews the most famous by Ravel for a more intimate version for String Quartet. Mussorgsky’s aren’t the only images in this programme – Crawford-Seeger’s Wind Quintet paints a compelling image of the ailing composer returning to the thing she most loves, while Arnold’s Guitar Concerto is a tacit portrait of the great jazz guitarists – Django Reinhardt’s influence on the piece is unmistakable.

"The history of American composition at the beginning of the 20th century revolves around an absent center," states Alex Ross, music critic for the New Yorker, and even titles the corresponding chapter in his bestseller "The Rest is Noise" "The Invisibles." This refers to composers such as Charles Ives, Wallingford Riegger, Carl Ruggles and others who had to work hard to establish an identity as American composers. Barbara Hannigan has made it her mission to bring these "invisibles" back to light. After intensive research in the Library of Congress, she presents a program that is probably unique in its form. It shows American music between 1900 and 1945 as if through a magnifying glass: from radical simplicity to radical dissonance to the fusion of classical and popular music, which reached its peak on Broadway. A picture of musical diversity that must necessarily remain incomplete, but even in this form allows fascinating and surprising insights. Hannigan's particular focus is on the individual, edgy, rebellious voices that sought their own expression and broke new ground.

A 2011 piece by Sally Beamish based on Mozart’s Adagio for glass harmonica is paired here with an arrangement for wind quintet of one of Dvořák’s most well-known works, the ‘American’ string quartet. The remarkable work of Ruth Crawford Seeger has been revived extensively in recent years, including her Suite from 1952.

The Grammy Award–nominated JACK Quartet, “one of contemporary music’s indispensable ensembles” (The New York Times), is renowned for its expansive programming of 20th- and 21st-century string music. This free outdoor performance, curated in collaboration with the visionary Tania León, features music by four American composers who redefine modern string quartet repertoire. Ruth Crawford Seeger’s String Quartet 1931 reimagines rhythm and harmony, still sounding fresh almost a century later. Gabriella Smith’s Carrot Revolution (2015) is a thoroughly modern patchwork of “wildly contrasting influences,” weaving together elements from J. S. Bach, Celtic fiddle tunes, The Who, and more. Amy Williams’s new work, Tangled Madrigals, offers a contemporary take on medieval hockets—a dazzling technique in the hands of a string quartet—while the pioneering George Lewis stretches the quartet to its virtuosic limits in a 2022 JACK commission.
