Ever subtle, ever ambivalent, Tchaikovsky juggles joy and tragedy in his Fourth Symphony, led here by guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk. Tchaikovsky’s so-called “Fate” motif reminds us that we cannot live in the beautiful world of our dreams. “This is fate,” he explained, “that fatal force which hangs above your head like the sword of Damocles, and unwaveringly, constantly poisons the soul.” If fate is the soul’s poison, the Fourth’s shining finale is the antidote. Rarely programmed but undeniably compelling, Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto is among the most challenging pieces in the repertoire. The concerto is an electrifying assemblage of unlikely influences, ranging from Mozart to Stravinsky. SF Symphony Principal Flute Yubeen Kim takes on Ibert’s uncategorizable tour de force.

The program concludes with Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments, a neoclassical masterpiece that blends crisp counterpoint with modernist sparkle. With its inventive forms, rhythmic vitality, and kaleidoscope of timbres, the work closes the evening in a spirit both playful and sophisticated.

One of the oldest of instruments, the harp has been tied to myths and legends across many cultures and civilizations. In our concerts it takes on a unique chamber role that reveals its hidden qualities, and its chameleon-like character is fully on display in this program of original works and arrangements. Two lesser known, but equally wonderous Piano Trios bookend the evening.

Israeli Chamber Project: Orpheus' Lyre

The famous "Chorale St. Antonii" comes from Haydn's B-flat major Divertimento, which Brahms used as the theme for his "Haydn Variations". The chorale is probably a pilgrimage song that was sung on foot to a St. Anthony's chapel to bring the pilgrims to their destination - "d'un pas léger", with light steps. The wind quintet genre took off in Paris with the enthusiastically received compositions of Anton Reicha, which Franz Danzi emulated in his G minor wind quintet. If France is still considered a stronghold of woodwind sound today, this is also thanks to Paul Taffanel. The "Société des Instruments à Vent", which he founded in 1878, also inspired later composers such as Jacques Ibert to write works for wind quintet. French Baroque composers used the term "Tombeau" to describe funeral pieces for deceased colleagues. Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin" is more of a musical nod to a bygone era and is much more light-hearted than the title suggests.

The centrepiece, Prokofiev’s seventh and final symphony – an emotional and reflective work completed in 1952, only a year before his death. There are echoes of another seventh in Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, which takes its inspiration from the second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, as well as fragments from his journal entries.

Mozart's "Jupiter Symphony" marks a conclusion and at the same time a departure into new worlds. With it, Mozart crowns and ends his work in the field of the symphony in the highest perfection. At the same time, he presents the first monumental work in the line of tradition that will determine symphonic music in the 19th century. After all, this symphony is one of those works that established Mozart's immortal fame early on. One of his most ardent admirers was Tchaikovsky. He said that the music of this "sunny genius" moved him to tears.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

Works by three eclectic composers comprise this afternoon’s programme. Paul Hindemith’s output was bewilderingly large, and the Kleine Kammermusik performed today finds him in neoclassical mood. With their newest program, Mirror Visions Ensemble celebrates the influence and inspiration of movies with songs that pay homage to “the silver screen” — a cultural beacon for generations. The program will premiere MVE's latest commission, Griffin Candey’s Silver Songs with poetry by Rae Armantrout, Richie Hofmann, Rebecca Hoogs, Jeanne Murray Walker, Kate Northrop, and Frank O’Hara. The program includes a “mirror vision” (the same text set to music by different composers) with Howard Moss’ hilarious poem “Horror Movie” in songs by Chris DeBlasio and William Flanagan. The program gives a glimpse of Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler’s disdain for Hollywood, provides melodic morsels of Erich Korngold’s film scoring, and commemorates Humphrey Bogart, Lana Turner, and other Hollywood royalty.

The program also features the profound “Song of Destiny” by symphonic master Johannes Brahms, and the lush sounds of Ravel’s second suite to his ballet Daphnis and Chloe.

Students perform a variety of selections that they have studied with faculty during the semester. Student vocalists Sydney Cottrell (alto) and Melina Soberg (soprano) along with instrumentalists Matthew Cheong (guitar), Sarah Chianglin and Kevin Park (flute), Claire Tiunn Chang (clarinet), Amelie Yap (oboe), Gedi Weidig (violin), Ryan Butler (bass), Emma Constable, Tian Dong, Theo Kokonas, and Nick Payton (piano), plus the cello-piano duo of Elizabeth Sohn and Jisue Choi offering selections that they have studied with faculty. They will be assisted by pianist Kyungmi Kim.
