Gustavo Dudamel gets down and dirty with Lorenz’ Todo Terreno, an off-road adventure through his native Venezuela. Hitching a ride too is Grau’s Odisea, whose concerto odyssey travels east to west, imbibing the excitement of arrival; the nostalgia of departures; and the chaos and colours of the streets. Tchaikovsky is in more sober mood; but the third movement of his Symphony No 4 fairly fizzes with the popping corks of plucked strings, and fate ultimately meets its scurrying match.

Founded in 2017, the Reverón Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the most important chamber music ensembles from Latin America. Its members share a true passion in the performance of works by Latin American composers whose main goal is to introduce audiences to their rich repertoire of contemporary and standard works. These seasoned artists, all Venezuelan but now residing in the U.S., are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloging, performance, editing, and recording of this repertoire along with commissioning new works. Recent collaborations include La Hamaca (2021) and El Ventilador (2022), written for the trio by Venezuelan-American composer Ricardo Lorenz, and the world premiere of Barroqueada (2020) by Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Águila.

In his music to Egmont, Beethoven magnificently distilled the heroic tale of a Dutch warrior who gave his life to preserve freedom and independence in the face of oppression. "Beethoven has done wonders in matching music to text…,” remarked Egmont playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Gustavo Dudamel leads the LA Phil in a narrated performance of Beethoven’s music for the play. Leading off the evening is the world premiere of Ricardo Lorenz’s Humboldt’s Nature, inspired by the South American travels of Beethoven’s like-minded contemporary, philosopher and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. In between, piano sensation Yunchan Lim, winner of the 2022 Van Cliburn competition, performs Beethoven’s enchanting Second Piano Concerto.
