Argentine pianist Sergio Tiempo is soloist in the Norwegian Edvard Grieg’s fiery Piano Concerto, paired with the composer’s delightful Holberg Suite, based on Baroque dances. Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia pointedly to elevate Finnish national feeling, and it succeeded wonderfully, becoming one of his most popular works. His late single-movement Seventh Symphony is the ultimate expression of his personal musical language.

The Hallé’s multi-faceted Artist-in Residence, Thomas Adès conducts this atmospheric programme centred on Finland’s greatest composer, which features two of his greatest symphonies as well as a pair of pieces influenced by him. Einojuhani Rautavaara was a protégé of Sibelius and his Deux Serenades, is a gleaming example of his seductively Romantic style. Here it’s performed by the remarkable American violinist Stephen Waarts, who made a huge impression here a couple of seasons ago when stepping in to perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto at short notice. He also performs Adès’ homage to Sibelius, a compact, free-form concerto, in which the stratospheric solo violin soars over a restless orchestra in a serene reverie.

Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite stands as a masterpiece within the realm of neoclassical composition, reflecting the composer's profound admiration for the Baroque era while infusing it with his unique Nordic sensibility. Composed in 1884 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Danish-Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg, the suite showcases Grieg's ability to blend historical forms with his own distinctive voice.

The suite is comprised of five movements, each offering a delightful exploration of Baroque dance forms imbued with Grieg's characteristic lush harmonies and melodic inventiveness. The first movement, "Praeludium," opens the suite with a stately introduction, evoking the grandeur of the Baroque period while introducing motifs that will recur throughout the work. Following the prelude, the suite unfolds with the lively "Sarabande," characterized by its graceful triple meter and intricate interplay of melodic lines. Every member of the Philharmonia has their moment in the spotlight in Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a work fizzing with imagination. It’s hard to believe Bartók was in hospital in the early stages of his final illness when he accepted this commission, his music is so full of energy and life.

Salonen completes the programme with the First Symphony by his fellow Finn Jean Sibelius. From its haunting opening clarinet solo to the intense energy of the finale, this piece is a favourite with many Sibelius fans. And it’s a perfect introduction to his distinctive voice for anyone new to his music.

From the spirited melodies of children at play in the Villa Borghese pine groves to the triumphant march of the Roman legions as they advance along the Appian Way, each movement paints a rich, auditory tapestry.

The Berkshire Symphony is a 75-member symphonic orchestra comprising, in roughly equal proportions, Williams College music students, Williams music faculty members, and area professionals. The Symphony performs music by a range of composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Wagner. Students are paired with their teachers and mentors throughout the rehearsal period and throughout the performance season. Seated this way, the students are exposed to a level of professionalism and discipline that is rare in an educational setting. At the same time, the students’ infectious enthusiasm contributes to the Berkshire Symphony’s remarkable energy and rich sound. Four concerts are presented each season. The goal is to expose students to a broad range of symphonic repertory, while maintaining a commitment to perform music by living and American composers.

A profound unfolding of stillness and rebirth, Henryk Górecki’s third symphony – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs – not only topped the classical charts but cracked the British pop charts in 1992, selling over a million copies and rocketing the Polish composer into global fame. Its fascination has not waned over the last thirty years, with multiple recordings and stagings; the Mahlerian beauty and meditation on motherhood, love and loss still speaks to a huge audience.

Lars Petter Hagen (b. 1975) wrote Kunstnerens fortvilelse foran de antikke fragmenters storhet (The Artist's Despair Before the Grandeur of Ancient Ruins) for the Oslo Philharmonic, who premiered the piece in 2010. The title is taken from the famous drawing by Johann Heinrich Füssli in which an artist buries his face in his hands in front of Roman ruins - unattainably beautiful in all their transience. Hagen's ruins are Richard Strauss' and Gustav Mahler's music, and the starting point for the piece is Mahler's third symphony. As the artists of antiquity, they established frameworks for their art form that later composers must relate to.

Gemma New, “one of the brightest rising stars in the conducting firmament” (St. Louis Post Dispatch), returns to guide the MSO through the adventure of Sibelius's Second Symphony. Though Sibelius denied any political story behind the Second’s music, patriotic hearts have adopted it anyway — the symphony’s heroic feelings of hope and triumph are impossible to ignore. Opening the program is Szymanowski's Second Violin Concerto, a lyrical journey rich with color, and made even richer in the hands of violin virtuoso Vadim Gluzman.

The highlight of the evening will be Sibelius's Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that begins with a whisper and builds to the majestic "swan theme" finale, inspired by the sight of 16 swans in flight.
