Warm up your January with the Calgary Phil and conductor Fawzi Haimor in this wide-ranging program featuring Ginastera's spirited Argentine dances and Gershwin's musical portrait of a wistful American wandering the streets of Paris. The Calgary Youth Orchestra joins the Phil in a side-by-side performance of Valerie Coleman's bold musical call for unity in a divided world, and Canadian cellist Luka Coetzee is the blazing protagonist in the sweeping drama of Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante. There are countless string quartets—both ensembles and works—but saxophone quartets? With this lineup, the MAAT Saxophone Quartet is making a name for itself. As the European Concert Hall Organization's "Rising Star," they will tour throughout Europe in the 2025/26 season. After eight sold-out children's concerts in 2024, they will also return to the Elbphilharmonie with a program that showcases the quartet's diversity, with arrangements ranging from string quartets to piano concertos.

The Belgian National Orchestra celebrates rhythms and percussion. Gershwin's only opera, Porgy and Bess , distills the essence of jazz and contains timeless tunes like Summertime . With Body Language (2012), Julia Wolfe highlights Colin Currie's physical and musical talent, transforming his body into a veritable instrument to fuse the sounds of urban folk music with those of the orchestra. Andriessen's Tapdance (2013), also written for Currie, magnifies the sound of tap dancing and the memory of big bands. As for Arvo Pärt's Fratres , characteristic of the Estonian composer's ethereal and meditative style, it offers a suspended moment imbued with spirituality.

Pianist and ECHO Klassik prizewinner Sebastian Knauer performs together with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra from Hamburg’s twin city Prague under the baton of American conductor and Emmy Award winner Sarah Hicks at the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. The programme includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto KV 466 and George Gershwin’s »Concerto in F«, two of the most famous and beautiful piano concertos of all time. After the director Herbert Fritsch captivated audiences with an extravagant symphony concert in 2024, this guest concept is now becoming a favourite tradition at the Komische Oper Berlin. This time, the spotlight falls on the charismatic actor Ulrich Matthes, who steps in as concert curator. Under the theme of ‘boldly stepping forth’, he launches the new year with a dazzling programme while offering personal insights into his favourite musical works. Here, the bright optimism of Mozart’s ‘Linz Symphony’ (1st movement) meets the reverent Adagio from Schumann’s Second Symphony. The jazz-infused energy of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major meets with Bernstein’s playful Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. And after his 2014 performance as a narrator at a symphony concert with the Komische Oper—who knows? This time, Ulrich Matthes just might take the leap into song...

For almost 50 years, the "El Sistema" initiative, Venezuela's large-scale music development program, has been a fixture in national and international musical life. The youth orchestras, in particular, have made a name for themselves under the direction of renowned conductors – the most famous example is the orchestra named after freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, with its chief conductor Gustavo Dudamel, which, strictly speaking, is no longer a youth orchestra. The successor orchestra, featuring highly talented and motivated young musicians, star conductor Sir Simon Rattle, and Gustav Mahler's beloved First Symphony, is now coming to Hamburg.

Bass-baritone Alfred Walker and soprano Brittany Renee headline one of the defining works of American music theater. With its fusion of opera, jazz, and Broadway, the Gershwins’ enduring masterpiece features a number of tunes whose popularity has transcended the opera house, including the classics “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” Hailed by The Washington Post as “a Porgy of its time that speaks to ours,” James Robinson’s vivid staging features electrifying choreography by Camille A. Barbara Hannigan returns to Berwaldhallen to perform the Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s work I’m not a Tale to be Told together with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The piece was specifically written for Hannigan, who both sings and conducts. Next follows Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, also known as the ‘Trauersinphonie,’ one of the composer’s most famous works. The concert concludes with George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess – Symphonic Picture, based on his opera of the same name from 1935

Late Romantic, atmospheric, dramatic, beautiful: the Shakespeare tone poem Hamlet and Ophelia by Edward MacDowell, the first US composer to achieve international acclaim. He was still strongly influenced by European tradition: lots of Liszt, a bit of Brahms, a dash of Edvard Grieg - that was the mix. The first true musical Americana emerged with ragtime, jazz, and the popular music influenced by them. George Gershwin was a pioneer in the fusion of these genres with classical music. Master arranger Robert Russell Bennett has combined the hits from his opera Porgy and Bess into a colorful panorama in his Symphonic Picture . The southern part of the continent also sends its greetings with Rhythm of the Americas by US jazz and fusion musician Bob Mintzer. Afro-Caribbean, jazz, and much more combine to create a fiery mix in this concert for saxophone quartet and orchestra. At the helm: the Israeli-American conductor Nimrod David Pfeffer, closely associated with the New York Met and the Lyric Opera Company of Guatemala.

Pianist Hayato Sumino forged his own path with a YouTube channel under the name “Cateen,” which has gained more than 1.3 million followers and 180 million views. Now a Sony Classical recording artist and an Artist Ambassador for Apple Music Classical, he has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and toured worldwide. This recital spans signature Chopin works and compositions by Ravel, Debussy, Gershwin, Hans Zimmer, and Sumino himself. As a finale, he does the impossible: playing Ravel's Boléro, an orchestral tourde force, on two pianos at the same time.

The afternoon begins with a pre-concert lecture at 2:15 p.m., followed by the concert at 3:00 p.m. Audiences will experience Jessie Montgomery’s uplifting Hymn for Everyone, Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait, and A Troupe’s Cadence by featured student composer Ethan Chaparro. The program concludes with George Gershwin’s beloved classic, An American in Paris, a vibrant musical journey through the streets of Paris with a distinctly American voice.

American conductor Dennis Russell Davies is the point of connection in this vibrant concert, which crosses continents and musical genres. The Principal Conductor of the Brno Philharmonic also has deep roots in jazz, having worked with luminaries such as Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. The latter’s 1963 concerto for jazz quartet and orchestra, Brandenburg Gate Revisited, receives its first live UK performance with leading British pianist Freddy Kempf and a Czech jazz trio spinning sepia melodies around a subtly noir orchestral accompaniment. Freddy also takes the lead in Gershwin’s Variations on I Got Rhythm, a sprightly showpiece exploring similar terrain to his famous Rhapsody in Blue.

Headlining this all-American program is the red, white, and blue Rhapsody in Blue that Gershwin described as a sort of “musical kaleidoscope of America.” Inon Barnatan “fine music-making wedded to astounding technique” (The Washington Post) stars in this beloved American classic, an effervescent mix of jazz and classical music. The composer himself was at the keyboard at the premiere, and the audience went wild with enthusiasm, propelling this concerto to iconic status. Angélica Negrón’s gripping work for orchestra, chorus and four soloists is an elegy for lost sounds and incorporates birdsong, whale calls, sounds of forests and oceans. It is not to be missed!
