It's about to get exciting! When piano-playing brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen join forces with top drummers Alexej Gerassimez and Emil Kuyumcuyan, musical sparks fly. All four already know each other from previous tours. Audiences can therefore look forward to a well-rehearsed team whose enthusiasm for experimentation, sense of rhythm, and outstanding virtuosity promise a veritable firework display on keys and drumsticks. In addition to original compositions for this unusual ensemble, including works by Steve Reich, the program also includes arrangements of repertoire classics such as the Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

This extraordinary program presents a work of the powerful, contemporary voice of composer Carlos Simon, whose works resonate with history, hope, and heart. Tonight’s concert celebrates the clarinet, and the outstanding playing of Mark van de Wiel.  

Mark first performed in the Royal Festival Hall as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and was the Philharmonia’s Principal Clarinet from 2000 to 2025. He plays a brand new concerto commissioned from his friend Jonathan Dove CBE. Dove’s music often expresses feelings of wonder at the natural world.  His third concerto to feature a soloist scanning the skies (following Stargazer and Northern Lights), Rainbow showcases Mark’s virtuosity and lyricism. 

The celebration continues with Aaron Copland’s glorious Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman. Then Mark hands over to the Philharmonia’s new Principal Clarinet Maura Marinucci for the unmistakable glissando opening of Rhapsody in Blue. On piano, Frank Dupree brings his infectious energy and enthusiasm to Gershwin’s masterpiece.

A beloved star of French piano, Hélène Grimaud also maintains a deep connection with the United States and American music, through emblematic works such as Gershwin's Concerto (1925), imbued with the spirit of jazz, of which she has delivered a fascinating recording. Also composed in the United States in 1943, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra offers each family of instruments the opportunity to shine through solos of breathtaking virtuosity. A similar virtuosity is found in Salonen's Helix (2005), a study in acceleration where musical motifs unfold in spirals, like a helix.

This stirring concert is a celebration of American creativity with a patriotic blend of classical, jazz, and Broadway influences. We open with Charles Ives’s enigmatic The Unanswered Question, a work that floats in timeless stillness as it contemplates life’s eternal mysteries, and the premiere of Caprice by Boyd Eagle, a 20th century Native American jazz musician and composer and grandfather of our very own Maestro Daniel Hege. The celebration continues with Peter Boyer’s Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue, a modern showpiece for piano and orchestra that pulses with patriotic spirit and cinematic grandeur. Pianist Jeffrey Biegel is performing Boyer’s contemporary Rhapsody in all 50 states, and this performance represents Kansas.

Witness the exceptional talents of RCM alumni Luka Coetzee and Jon Kimura Parker as they perform a varied selection of works from Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue to Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G Minor, and beyond. 

“Tonally, technically, and musically superb,” Canadian cellist Luka Coetzee “plays sublimely, with an interpretative grasp [and] phenomenal musicianship [that] should on no account be missed,” said Fanfare Magazine. Since her professional debut at age 11, Luka has appeared as soloist with orchestras worldwide including the Helsinki Philharmonic, Lahti Symphony, Cape Town Philharmonic, Stuttgart Chamber, and more. At the age of one, Luka had her first cello lesson with Christine Bootland. Luka also started playing piano at the age of three and finished the Royal Conservatory of Music ARCT piano exam with First Class Honours under the instruction of Derek Chiu.

Grammy-winning composer Steven Mackey comes to SFCM to work with the orchestra as they present his work, Urban Ocean—described as mysterious, deep, vast, powerful, and teeming with life. Mackey's residency will be known as the Andrew W. Imbrie Visiting Chair in Composition. The concert also features Gershwin’s An American In Paris, a jazz-influenced symphonic poem, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, which took 14 years for the composer to create, known for its stormy, passionate opening, its contrasting lyrical second and third movements, and triumphant, heroic finale. SFCM conducting student Chih-Yao Chang conducts Gershwin in this concert.

Tiffany Townsend has been praised for her “powerhouse soprano and expressive presence” (The Wall Street Journal) and “rich voice and interpretive talent” (Bachtrack). She was designated as a Resident Artist at Seattle Opera for the 2024-2025 season. She made her role debut as America Robinson in Jubilee and covered Tosca and Nedda in Pagliacci at Seattle Opera during that season. Ms. Townsend is the recipient of the prestigious 2021 Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation. She has performed with LA Opera, Wolf Trap Opera & Opera Philadelphia. She also has been in concert with the New Jersey Symphony, the Bakersfield Symphony, Artosphere Festival, the Missouri Symphony, Tacoma Symphony and The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Tiffany Townsend holds a Professional Studies Certificate in Opera from Curtis Institute of Music, a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Millsaps College.

The ingenious Barbara Hannigan conducts an all-American evening that’s capped by an orchestral suite of timeless tunes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Rounding out this cross-country road trip are bold, evocative works by American mavericks Carl Ruggles and George Crumb, and Barber’s nostalgic Knoxville: Summer of 1915, based on a poem by James Agee and featuring award-winning Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth.

Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero opens the rich treasure chest of American music. Adolphus Hailstork’s An American Port of Call captures the relentless energy of the port of Norfolk, Virginia. Pianist Clayton Stephenson performs Gershwin’s jazz and blues-infused Concerto in F. Charles Ives composed his delightful and quirky Variations on “America” when he was only 17. Audiences at the 1934 premiere of Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony were so moved that they erupted in applause at the end of each movement. The Belgian National Orchestra celebrates rhythms and percussion. Gershwin's only opera, Porgy and Bess , distills the essence of jazz and contains timeless tunes like Summertime . With Body Language (2012), Julia Wolfe highlights Colin Currie's physical and musical talent, transforming his body into a veritable instrument to fuse the sounds of urban folk music with those of the orchestra. Andriessen's Tapdance (2013), also written for Currie, magnifies the sound of tap dancing and the memory of big bands. As for Arvo Pärt's Fratres , characteristic of the Estonian composer's ethereal and meditative style, it offers a suspended moment imbued with spirituality.

After the director Herbert Fritsch captivated audiences with an extravagant symphony concert in 2024, this guest concept is now becoming a favourite tradition at the Komische Oper Berlin. This time, the spotlight falls on the charismatic actor Ulrich Matthes, who steps in as concert curator. Under the theme of ‘boldly stepping forth’, he launches the new year with a dazzling programme while offering personal insights into his favourite musical works. Here, the bright optimism of Mozart’s ‘Linz Symphony’ (1st movement) meets the reverent Adagio from Schumann’s Second Symphony. The jazz-infused energy of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major meets with Bernstein’s playful Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. And after his 2014 performance as a narrator at a symphony concert with the Komische Oper—who knows? This time, Ulrich Matthes just might take the leap into song...
