**About Adam Golka:**
Polish-American pianist Adam Golka has been a prominent figure on the concert stage since winning first prize at the 2nd China Shanghai International Piano Competition at the age of sixteen. He has performed with numerous prestigious orchestras and has received accolades such as the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Max I. Allen Classical Fellowship Award. Golka is known for his passionate chamber music performances and has recorded works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. He has also premiered compositions by contemporary composers and continues to develop his artistry under the mentorship of renowned musicians.

The charismatic Italian-British conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, who has been absent from the season since 2018, returns to lead the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a forty-year-old ensemble that brings together instrumentalists from all over Europe. The program is entirely twentieth-century and evokes the spirit of American jazz, from the ballets La création du monde by Milhaud and Fancy Free by Bernstein to the Variations on «I Got Rhythm» by Gershwin. The highlight of the evening is the whimsical and at times unpredictable Second Concerto by Saint-Saëns, which Pappano presents by relying on the luminous and flexible pianism of Bertrand Chamayou, the only four-time winner of the French “Victoires de la Musique” award and a guest in the season in 2016.

VSO’s 90th anniversary at the Flynn kicks off with an all-American program and two living greats: virtuoso banjoist Béla Fleck and composer Adolphus Hailstork. Fleck makes his East Coast debut with his catchy arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue for banjo, and Hailstork joins the VSO in person at the Flynn. This concert marks the VSO’s premiere performance of William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1, with narrated epigraphs written by Paul Laurence Dunbar and other prominent Black poets.

Stewart Goodyear plays the classic Rhapsody in Blue, followed by jazzy variations on I’ve Got Rhythm performed by The Menefield/Phillips Quartet. Symphony No.1 by Black composer William Grant Still blends classical symphonic form with spirituals, blues, and jazz. This landmark composition influenced Gershwin, who in turn inspired Bernstein.

Throughout his all-too-short life, Mozart had great joy and fascination with the singing and musical qualities of the woodwinds. He composed a multitude of works which stage the qualities of the woodwinds in the most beautiful way, and at the same time you sense Mozart's great insight into the enormous development that took place with woodwinds in the period. The clarinet and basset horn were new instruments that immediately caught Mozart's attention.
