For almost 50 years, the "El Sistema" initiative, Venezuela's large-scale music development program, has been a fixture in national and international musical life. The youth orchestras, in particular, have made a name for themselves under the direction of renowned conductors – the most famous example is the orchestra named after freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, with its chief conductor Gustavo Dudamel, which, strictly speaking, is no longer a youth orchestra. The successor orchestra, featuring highly talented and motivated young musicians, star conductor Sir Simon Rattle, and Gustav Mahler's beloved First Symphony, is now coming to Hamburg.

Barbara Hannigan returns to Berwaldhallen to perform the Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s work I’m not a Tale to be Told together with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The piece was specifically written for Hannigan, who both sings and conducts. Next follows Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, also known as the ‘Trauersinphonie,’ one of the composer’s most famous works. The concert concludes with George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess – Symphonic Picture, based on his opera of the same name from 1935

Late Romantic, atmospheric, dramatic, beautiful: the Shakespeare tone poem Hamlet and Ophelia by Edward MacDowell, the first US composer to achieve international acclaim. He was still strongly influenced by European tradition: lots of Liszt, a bit of Brahms, a dash of Edvard Grieg - that was the mix. The first true musical Americana emerged with ragtime, jazz, and the popular music influenced by them. George Gershwin was a pioneer in the fusion of these genres with classical music. Master arranger Robert Russell Bennett has combined the hits from his opera Porgy and Bess into a colorful panorama in his Symphonic Picture . The southern part of the continent also sends its greetings with Rhythm of the Americas by US jazz and fusion musician Bob Mintzer. Afro-Caribbean, jazz, and much more combine to create a fiery mix in this concert for saxophone quartet and orchestra. At the helm: the Israeli-American conductor Nimrod David Pfeffer, closely associated with the New York Met and the Lyric Opera Company of Guatemala.

Pianist Hayato Sumino forged his own path with a YouTube channel under the name “Cateen,” which has gained more than 1.3 million followers and 180 million views. Now a Sony Classical recording artist and an Artist Ambassador for Apple Music Classical, he has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and toured worldwide. This recital spans signature Chopin works and compositions by Ravel, Debussy, Gershwin, Hans Zimmer, and Sumino himself. As a finale, he does the impossible: playing Ravel's Boléro, an orchestral tourde force, on two pianos at the same time.

American conductor Dennis Russell Davies is the point of connection in this vibrant concert, which crosses continents and musical genres. The Principal Conductor of the Brno Philharmonic also has deep roots in jazz, having worked with luminaries such as Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. The latter’s 1963 concerto for jazz quartet and orchestra, Brandenburg Gate Revisited, receives its first live UK performance with leading British pianist Freddy Kempf and a Czech jazz trio spinning sepia melodies around a subtly noir orchestral accompaniment. Freddy also takes the lead in Gershwin’s Variations on I Got Rhythm, a sprightly showpiece exploring similar terrain to his famous Rhapsody in Blue.

Headlining this all-American program is the red, white, and blue Rhapsody in Blue that Gershwin described as a sort of “musical kaleidoscope of America.” Inon Barnatan “fine music-making wedded to astounding technique” (The Washington Post) stars in this beloved American classic, an effervescent mix of jazz and classical music. The composer himself was at the keyboard at the premiere, and the audience went wild with enthusiasm, propelling this concerto to iconic status. Angélica Negrón’s gripping work for orchestra, chorus and four soloists is an elegy for lost sounds and incorporates birdsong, whale calls, sounds of forests and oceans. It is not to be missed!

The Reno Phil opens the 57th season of Classix with some of the most celebrated American composers - Gershwin, Copland, and Price. In the pursuit of artistry, pianist Michelle Cann brings her breathtaking virtuosity to the irrepressible jazz rhythms of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which garnered immediate acclaim for breaking the boundaries between classical and jazz. Even more than 100 years later, it has still not lost its luster. This beloved work is the centerpiece of a journey through America’s musical heartland that also features the long-lost Piano Concerto by pioneering African American composer Florence Price—a jazzy, soulful masterwork Cann has championed since its remarkable rediscovery. Begrudgingly known as the “Dean of American Composers,” Copland’s well-known works will bookend the concert.

We celebrate the start of our 50th season with an overture composed specifically for the occasion by Utah composer, Andrew Maxfield. The orchestral showcase continues with two favorites suggested by the orchestra players, Gershwin’s tuneful An American in Paris, and Saint-Saëns powerful Symphony No. 3, also known as the “Organ Symphony.” Local organist, David Fox, joins us from the bench of the Lively-Fulcher organ to open the season with wave after wave of glorious sound!

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony opens the 2025-2026 season with a powerful tribute to American spirit and local legacy. Under the direction of Richard Cangro, this program features Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland, with actor Steven Duchrow portraying Carl Sandburg as narrator—a nod to Sandburg’s Grammy-winning 1960 performance. Also on the program are Copland’s stirring Fanfare for the Common Man, Barber’s deeply moving Adagio for Strings, and Gershwin’s vibrant An American in Paris. In the new series "Lionel Bringuier", the Music Director of the OPRL, joined by the formidable pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, invites us on a sonic journey that crosses continents and fuses cultures. Written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Orchestra, the Fourth Symphony (1930) was revised 17 years later in the USSR by Prokofiev, who thus completed an expressionist and frenetic work, with a martial finale. The Concerto "The Egyptian", completed in Cairo in 1896, succumbed to the fashion for orientalism, notably with the revival of a Nubian song collected by Saint-Saëns during a cruise on the Nile. Finally, An American in Paris , with its jazzy rhythms and urban energy, concludes this journey with a vibrant homage by Gershwin to the French capital.

Ravel, the true DNA of the Orchestre National de France's repertoire, especially in this year of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Between the menacing whirlwinds of La Valse slips the Piano Concerto by his friend Gershwin, to whom Maurice Ravel once urged, when he came to ask his advice: "Be yourself!" This will be the roguish touch of this French gala between Paris and New York, under the fingers of the eternally young Rudolf Buchbinder.

Welcome to our season celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States. This program connects the music of Antonin Dvořák who so greatly influenced American Music, with the American composers who followed him, including George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copland.

Ravel, a true DNA of the Orchestre National de France's repertoire, especially in this year of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Between the menacing whirlwinds of  La Valse  and an extremely rare version of the  Trio  slips the  Piano Concerto  by his friend Gershwin, to whom Maurice Ravel once urged, when he came to ask his advice: "Be yourself!" This will be the roguish touch of this  French gala  between Paris and New York, under the fingers of the eternally young Rudolf Buchbinder.

The Palace Hall

The BSO opens its season with a tribute to some of the great American composers, past and present. The pulse-pounding energy of John Adams takes us for a Short Ride in a Fast Machine. Jessie Montgomery’s arrangement of I Want to Go Home and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 both reflect on memory, history, and longing. John Williams’ "Escapades" from the Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can evokes an air of cool mischievousness with its dynamic interplay of saxophone, vibraphone, and bass. The jazzy swagger of Gershwin’s famous An American in Paris finishes the evening.

Immerse yourself in our country’s most distinctive cultural resource: its music. George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Carlos Simon guide you on an exhilarating, globe-trotting tour of Harlem and points beyond, in a program conducted by James Gaffigan. In works like the Piano Concerto in F and American in Paris, Gershwin captured our national sound by blending all the styles he knew—jazz, blues, classical, sacred Hebrew laments, Eastern European hoedowns, and Broadway balladeering. Sophisticated and streetwise, Ellington’s Harlem celebrates the multi-ethnic capital of Black culture via sweet swing rhythms and salty avant-garde harmonies. Simon grew up in Atlanta, but his 2018 orchestral study The Block is pure Harlem, inspired by the work of African American painter and songwriter Romare Bearden.

Inselmusik 2025 brings together experienced and young chamber musicians who will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the island of Rügen for three days of music-making. Eckart Runge, former cellist of the legendary Artemis Quartet, and his duo partner Jacques Ammon will lead the festival and also present their own transcendent programs. The young musicians will have the opportunity to showcase their work in portrait concerts.
