In a small town with a big sky, a gunshot rings out. Three women stand over the body of a man. Rumours say he was drunk when he left the bar. Maybe he fell over and pissed himself, or perhaps he got lost in the night. What if the end of his story is the beginning of someone else’s?

Britain has voted to leave the European Union, and low-paid art historian Elisabeth returns to the village she grew up in to read to the sleeping Daniel Gluck, her childhood next-door neighbour. The libraries are closed, new fences are being built, and no one will let Elisabeth renew her passport.
