In the overture to his successful operetta The Merry Widow, Franz Lehár ignites a sparkling firework display of immortal hits. Keywords: Da geh' ich ins Maxim, Vilja-Lied, Ja, das Studium der Weiber (Yes, the Study of Women)… A top-class symphonic concertante piece is also on the program: the dazzling and joyful A minor Cello Concerto by the all-round genius Camille Saint-Saëns. American composer Jessie Montgomery (born 1981) draws inspiration from jazz, hip hop and rock – all natural parts of life growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She wrote Duo for Violin and Cello for one of her close friends. The piece is intended as a tribute to friendship, with the various movements portraying the bonds that connect people: laughter, compassion, adventure – and sometimes a bit of silliness.

Joseph Haydn shows his entertaining side in the best sense of the word in his famous Trio in G major, which he composed in London in 1795. Haydn had been Kapellmeister at the court of the Esterházy family for almost thirty years. There he also became acquainted with original Hungarian dance music, which he presented to the delighted London audience in the last movement of the trio, the Rondo all’Ongarese. Zoltán Kodály had a completely different view of Hungarian folk music. He did not look for the temperamental element in it, but rather - like his colleague Béla Bartók - discovered a “Hungarian style“ on his research trips, “free of any sentimentality” and “superfluous ornamentation”. This is exactly what Kodály adopted in his second string quartet, which he composed between 1916 and 1918: a work of great seriousness and almost archaic power. In his Piano Quartet No. 1, on the other hand, Johannes Brahms indulges in Hungarian folklore, which the Hamburg-born composer also revived in his Hungarian Dances. In the final Rondo alla Zingarese of his quartet, Brahms sets sparks flying.

Before becoming Head of Music at Westminster Cathedral in London in 2021, Simon Johnson was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, where he performed at a variety of royal events, including the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the celebrations for her 90th birthday. The Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle, with its four manuals and 72 stops, is also very British and majestic. Its four manuals and 72 stops are modeled on the late-Romantic English town hall organs—in the first Toccata of the season, the Duisburg Philharmonic Choir will provide powerful support. Choir director Marcus Strümpe has included Anton Bruckner, among others, on the program, as the late-Romantic composer, as a virtuoso organist and composer of sacred music, was well versed in the combination of choir and organ. In Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Hear My Prayer," a soprano joins the organ and choir: the frequent alternations between solo voice and choir are reminiscent of the "anthem" tradition of the Anglican liturgy. William Harris and Herbert Howells, two prominent representatives of Anglican church music, are also on the program, while Louis Vierne, long-time chief organist at Notre-Dame de Paris, represents the rich organ scene in France. An exuberant romantic richness of sound characterizes his organ symphonies, a genre he himself invented.

Listen for the sounds of Russian folk tunes and castanets when violinist Stefan Jackiw performs Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto. Dance! It's starting again! To kick off the season, Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton presents a refreshing, dance-based program. First – how fitting – childhood memories: Zoltán Kodály spent his early years in Galánta and later incorporated melodies from there into his dances named after the Hungarian town. Then the curtain rises for Anna Clyne , the GSO's new "Composer in Focus," born in England and living in the USA! In her wonderfully elegiac piece "Dance," composed a few years ago, the Belgian Deutsche Grammophon cellist Camille Thomas plays the solo part. Even Johannes Brahms's First Symphony, after much hesitation, was a beginning – and moved Clara Schumann to exclaim, "wonderfully magnificent, quite overwhelming."

Music carries its own genetic code. It reveals who we are, and where we come from. It holds the identities of entire communities and has no respect for political boundaries. Music moves freely across borders, even when people cannot.  This exciting program will feature six exciting works from around the world, showcasing classical masterpieces inspired by rich folk traditions.  The orchestra opens with the lively Dances of Galánta by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, which combines traditional folk melodies from the composer’s home region with a symphonic context. Rimsky-Korsakov’s technicolor masterpiece, Russian Easter Overture is a carefully calculated explosion of orchestral color reflecting popular Russian feelings on this highest Christian feast. Native American folk songs will also be highlighted in a new and thrilling work from Mark Piszczek, titled Song Catcher.  The concert is rounded out with three very popular works from around the globe, Aaron Copland’s exciting Billy the Kid, Percy Grainger’s gorgeous Irish Tune from County Derry, and Dvorak’s electrifying Slavonic Dances.

This event, part of the "Chez Gergely" series, showcases a suite that encapsulates popular folk melodies where the whimsical hero boasts of battling Napoleon, taming a hellish horse, and conquering a seven-headed dragon. Alongside, experience the profound darkness and beauty of Béla Bartók's final Concerto, an unfinished masterpiece brought to life by the exceptional British violist Timothy Ridout, hailed as the best of his generation by Le Monde. The concert also features the Concerto for English horn by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, a piece that weaves elegiac moods with folk rhythms, performed by Jeroen Baerts, the first soloist of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL).

The festive concertos by the Italians Locatelli, Manfredini and Torelli, along with Albinoni's tender Adagio, are an integral part of the Christmas season not only in Italy. In Austria, too, the high holidays in the Christian calendar were a busy time. Michael Haydn left behind more than thirty masses, including the Missa Sancti Aloysii composed in 1777 for his "dear choirboys" from the Salzburg Kapellhaus for the memorial day of the Holy Innocents on December 28th, as well as his last completed work, the Missa Sancti Leopoldi. The motet by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria and the a cappella choir "The Angels and the Shepherds" by the Hungarian Zóltan Kodaly round off the program. "Developing one's own sound world and being able to express emotions in sounds" has been an important concern of the cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau for several years. The title of his new composition "He who sits on the throne laughs" comes from the 2nd Psalm and for him builds "a mental/visual bridge to the ever-laughing Franz Xaver Ohnesorg", to whom he dedicates this composition in loving memory.

Now, there is a wonderful rendezvous with the horn – about which the »Ideen zu einer Ästhetik der Tonkunst« (»Ideas on the Aesthetics of Music«) as early as 1784 stated that it was »humanly conceived as a sensitive soul for almost all societies«. Many composers were inspired by the instrument with its snail shape and distinctive sound to create music – including Mozart, whose horn pieces were all written for the virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb. He first played in the Salzburg court orchestra, but soon moved back to his hometown of Vienna. Due to his somewhat simple-minded character, however, he was often the target of Mozart’s witty remarks, who sometimes notated the pieces he wrote for him in different colours or added mocking remarks to the score. One result of this humorous friendship was the horn quintet from 1782, a work with lots of inventive humour and thematic imagination. The second composition was written by Brahms, who once disparaged the horn as a »brass viola« – yet he probably only meant this tongue-in-cheek, as it was his favourite instrument, especially in his youth. This may be why he wrote the poignant horn trio in 1865 as a mourning piece, shortly after his mother's death. It is characterised by a romantic sense of nature and hunting scenes, but also by mournful lamentations. His close friend Clara Schumann raved about the »extremely interesting work« with its opening movement, which is »very rich in engaging melodies«, its »beautiful« Adagio and its finale, which »is full of life«.

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is wild musical ride, each of its movements radically different, perhaps explaining its enduring popularity. One moment you’ll be swept along by its pounding propulsive rhythms, the next you’ll revel in grandly powerful melodies. The symphony finishes in an intense whirlwind, music which ratchets up the tension minute by minute leaving audiences (and musicians!) almost exhausted.

Famous for its use in Brief Encounter Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto is the epitome of heart on the sleeve emotion. Played by the brilliant Jeneba Kanneh-Mason it will be a smash. It is framed by Kodaly’s thrilling 'Galanta Dances' with their exuberant Hungarian rhythms and Beethoven’s extraordinary ‘Eroica’ which dwarfed all previous symphonies and, with its haunting funeral march and startling scherzo opened the way for the romantic symphonies of the 19th century to follow.

Lorenzo Viotti—known for his deep musical interpretations and work inviting new audiences to concert halls in the digital age—makes his first appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, leading two more rhapsodic pieces steeped in Hungarian, Czech, and Slovakian folk traditions. He guides Kodaly’s passionate Dances of Galánta before Marc Bouchkov—also making his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut—steps in to tackle each trill, scale, and double stop of Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto with precision and speed.
