Lorenzo Viotti—known for his deep musical interpretations and work inviting new audiences to concert halls in the digital age—makes his first appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, leading two more rhapsodic pieces steeped in Hungarian, Czech, and Slovakian folk traditions. Dive into the majestic world of Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring Suite, a collection of movements compiled from the ballet under the same name, this orchestral gem captures the essence of the American landscape with its lush melodies and evocative harmonies. The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma, beloved by SPAC audiences, returns to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto under the baton of conductor Xian Zhang. Opening the evening are two SPAC premieres by composers Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Zoltán Kodály.

The dramatic dynamism of the duo form is spotlighted in the first half of this program, which features two vastly different works: Mozart’s perfectly crafted Duo in G Major, performed by violinist William Hagen and violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, and Kodály’s thrilling and demanding Duo for Violin and Cello, played by Leila Josefowicz and Paul Watkins. Mozart is featured again in the second half, as his exquisite Clarinet Quintet showcases the soaring artistry of clarinetist David Shifrin and the Escher String Quartet.

The Meridian String Quartet presents a pair of 20th-century chamber works by Hungarian composers and close friends Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók. Kodály was passionate about preserving his heritage, and his String Serenade for two violins and viola is typical of his style: a blend of folk inspirations and modern harmonies, wrapped in a classical trio form. Béla Bartók's String Quartet No. 5 is a modern masterpiece, representing a mellowing of the composer’s style by reducing dissonant sounds and increasing rich harmonies.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s kicks off its 2023–2024 Carnegie Hall series in very special fashion, with pianists Lang Lang and Gina Alice Redlinger joining in an eclectic program conducted by Jahja Ling. The orchestra shines in the energetic overture to Rossini’s Semiramide and Kodály’s quintessentially Hungarian Dances of Galánta, while the piano takes center stage in works by Saint-Saëns. His virtuosic Second Piano Concerto, performed here by Lang Lang, is arguably his most popular, and Carnival of the Animals is one of the most constantly delightful works in the classical repertoire.

New York’s “hometown band” opens a new season with familiar favorites and exciting guests in a spirited performance. Maestro Jahja Ling leads a royal charge with Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide before Lang Lang takes the stage for Saint-Saëns’s virtuosic second Piano Concerto. The orchestra rollicks through an exuberant interpretation of Kodály’s folksy Dances of Galánta, highlighting the talents of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble member and clarinet soloist Jon Manasse. Finally, Lang Lang brings his famously expressive presence to The Carnival of the Animals, for which he’s joined on piano by Gina Alice Redlinger. To accompany Saint-Saëns’s well-loved suite, which blends the sounds and movements of animals with quotes from fellow composers, we hear a unique poetic narration, written expressly for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and handpicked by Lang Lang for the occasion.

Anja Bihlmaier returns to the theme of dance with Bernstein’s music from On the Town, its jazzy melodies accompanying sailors on leave in 1940s New York. The upbeat mood is continued with Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps, a playful ode to the pleasures of waking up on a Spring morning. The energetic pace is sustained in Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade with its lush, sweeping romantic orchestration. The concert ends with the Hungarian folk music-inspired Dances of Galánta by Kodaly.

Stravinsky’s concerto blends neoclassical clarity and proportion with rich, playful textures. Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 2 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is a delicate work by a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn. Popular music meets classical when guest conductor Ryan Bancroft makes his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut. The concert opens with the suite from Háry János, a 1926 Hungarian folk opera by Zoltán Kodály, a man who devoted his life to the preservation of Indigenous folk music. The kinetic young pianist Conrad Tao returns to Atlanta for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, and the program concludes with the Negro Folk Symphony, a piece infused with spirituals from the American South by Alabama native William Dawson.

Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk’s Melody for Symphony Orchestra has become a rallying cry for his homeland.
One of Tchaikovsky’s most joyful compositions, Symphony No. 2 was written while spending the summer in Ukraine. The piece melds Western and Russian symphonic structures with the music of Ukrainian folk songs, reflecting the confluence and collision of cultures through centuries of coexistence and conflict.

Music for Families: Music around the World - Percussion

Yuja Wang brings her “distinct perspective” and “wizardly technique” (Chicago Tribune) to Liszt’s First Piano Concerto, a pianistic tour de force that takes your breath away. Jakub Hrůša also conducts two Central European neglected gems: Kodály’s colorful Concerto for Orchestra and Martinů’s richly textured First Symphony.

Ninety years after Florence Price became the first Black woman to have a symphony played by a major orchestra, her Symphony No. 1 still stands out as a marvel of American identity in how it reflects the musical traditions of enslaved and native populations. This program kicks off with dances rooted in the folksongs of Hungary, and it features BSO Concertmaster Jonathan Carney performing Bruch’s beloved Violin Concerto No. 1, with its fiery finale channeling the rustic fiddling of central Europe.
