The legendary Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest American modern dance company, takes to the stage of La Fenice – fifty-one years after its last appearance in the lagoon city – to celebrate the centenary of its foundation. Acclaimed for their exceptional technique and expressive depth, the dancers present three of Graham’s creations, all of which have gone down in the history of modern ballet, offering the rare opportunity to enter the visionary world of the great choreographer, whose legacy continues to fascinate audiences around the world. Diversion of Angels (1948), to the music of Norman Dello Joio, investigates – through three pairs of dancers – three different modes of love: romantic, mature and adolescent. Lamentation (1930), to the gloomy notes of Zoltán Kodály, is a choreographed solo, during which, with stylised movements, the dancer’s body expresses the very essence of pain. Chronicle (1936), to music by Wallingford Riegger, depicts the reaction to the threat of fascism in Europe by Martha Graham, who had previously refused to participate in the Olympics in Nazi Germany. In addition to these historic choreographies is Imagine, a new production by the American choreographer Hope Boykin, with music by Leonard Bernstein, proposed in an arrangement by Christopher Rountree.

Kevin John Edusei returns to conduct a program celebrating the flamboyance and wit of two great Hungarian composers, Liszt and Kodály, beginning with Liszt’s symphonic poem, Les Préludes. Liszt wrote this dramatic piece based on poems depicting the heavens, stormy winds and pastoral scenes. Guest soloist Haochen Zhang performs Liszt’s high-spirited First Piano Concerto, which was criticized by his contemporaries for pushing the bounds of taste, but was later embraced by composers like Béla Bartók. Kodály’s Suite from the opera Háry János draws on his deep knowledge of Hungarian folk melodies to depict the tall tales of an imaginative veteran. The orchestra also presents Richard Strauss’ tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, and breathes life into the roguish German folk hero for which it's named.

Tarmo Peltokoski, the Finnish "talent of the century" (Tagesspiegel) on the baton, has been a close collaborator with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen since his phenomenally successful debut in June 2021. This season, Hamburg audiences will once again experience how Peltokoski's energetic presence spurs the Kammerphilharmonie's musicians to crackling peak performances. The evening's soloist is another exceptional young talent, Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich.

Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony is not just a masterpiece of Romanticism, but also an early example of the "Nordic style" – a sound ideal that also permeated the music of Sibelius, Grieg, and Brahms. At the February concert the Prague Philharmonia’s Chamber Music Series will host the Ševčík Quartet for the very first time. Among other things, they will play Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, which he composed upon a suggestion of the Czech Quartet. American composer Jessie Montgomery (born 1981) draws inspiration from jazz, hip hop and rock – all natural parts of life growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She wrote Duo for Violin and Cello for one of her close friends. The piece is intended as a tribute to friendship, with the various movements portraying the bonds that connect people: laughter, compassion, adventure – and sometimes a bit of silliness.

Joseph Haydn shows his entertaining side in the best sense of the word in his famous Trio in G major, which he composed in London in 1795. Haydn had been Kapellmeister at the court of the Esterházy family for almost thirty years. There he also became acquainted with original Hungarian dance music, which he presented to the delighted London audience in the last movement of the trio, the Rondo all’Ongarese. Zoltán Kodály had a completely different view of Hungarian folk music. He did not look for the temperamental element in it, but rather - like his colleague Béla Bartók - discovered a “Hungarian style“ on his research trips, “free of any sentimentality” and “superfluous ornamentation”. This is exactly what Kodály adopted in his second string quartet, which he composed between 1916 and 1918: a work of great seriousness and almost archaic power. In his Piano Quartet No. 1, on the other hand, Johannes Brahms indulges in Hungarian folklore, which the Hamburg-born composer also revived in his Hungarian Dances. In the final Rondo alla Zingarese of his quartet, Brahms sets sparks flying.

Before becoming Head of Music at Westminster Cathedral in London in 2021, Simon Johnson was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, where he performed at a variety of royal events, including the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the celebrations for her 90th birthday. The Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle, with its four manuals and 72 stops, is also very British and majestic. Its four manuals and 72 stops are modeled on the late-Romantic English town hall organs—in the first Toccata of the season, the Duisburg Philharmonic Choir will provide powerful support. Choir director Marcus Strümpe has included Anton Bruckner, among others, on the program, as the late-Romantic composer, as a virtuoso organist and composer of sacred music, was well versed in the combination of choir and organ. In Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Hear My Prayer," a soprano joins the organ and choir: the frequent alternations between solo voice and choir are reminiscent of the "anthem" tradition of the Anglican liturgy. William Harris and Herbert Howells, two prominent representatives of Anglican church music, are also on the program, while Louis Vierne, long-time chief organist at Notre-Dame de Paris, represents the rich organ scene in France. An exuberant romantic richness of sound characterizes his organ symphonies, a genre he himself invented.

Listen for the sounds of Russian folk tunes and castanets when violinist Stefan Jackiw performs Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto. Dance! It's starting again! To kick off the season, Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton presents a refreshing, dance-based program. First – how fitting – childhood memories: Zoltán Kodály spent his early years in Galánta and later incorporated melodies from there into his dances named after the Hungarian town. Then the curtain rises for Anna Clyne , the GSO's new "Composer in Focus," born in England and living in the USA! In her wonderfully elegiac piece "Dance," composed a few years ago, the Belgian Deutsche Grammophon cellist Camille Thomas plays the solo part. Even Johannes Brahms's First Symphony, after much hesitation, was a beginning – and moved Clara Schumann to exclaim, "wonderfully magnificent, quite overwhelming."

Music moves freely across borders, even when people cannot.  This exciting program will feature six exciting works from around the world, showcasing classical masterpieces inspired by rich folk traditions.  The orchestra opens with the lively Dances of Galánta by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, which combines traditional folk melodies from the composer’s home region with a symphonic context. Rimsky-Korsakov’s technicolor masterpiece, Russian Easter Overture is a carefully calculated explosion of orchestral color reflecting popular Russian feelings on this highest Christian feast. In pursuit of their degrees at SFCM, each student presents a recital that represents their artistry and craft. Student Recitals feature repertoire curated by students with guidance from their faculty instructor.

There’s only one Víkingur Ólafsson, and if you haven’t yet heard him, Brahms’ mighty Second Piano Concerto offers a magnificent introduction to this Icelandic piano sensation. “Everyone knows how to listen to music, just like we know how to drink water,” he says, “you just listen…” – and that’s all that you need do this afternoon. Domingo Hindoyan and the Orchestra will take care of the rest, and they’ll be bringing fire, as well as ice, in orchestral showpieces by Dvořák and Kodály.

Acclaimed cimbalom master Alex Udvary joins the orchestra for the Háry János Suite. Celebrated for its evocative storytelling through music, the Hungarian folk piece is beloved by orchestras worldwide. This adventurous concert also includes La Cueva del Milodón, an homage to the Chilean natural monument by Western Illinois University’s John Mindeman.

Fiery folk tunes meet the Orchestra – Domingo Hindoyan dives deep into a whirlwind of colour and rhythm, straight from the untamed musical imagination of Zoltán Kodály. A different kind of passion drives Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto, and violinist Michael Barenboim is just the artist to uncover both its poetry and its inner fire. Meanwhile, if you enjoy Dvořák’s ‘New World’ symphony, you simply have to hear the Seventh. This tempestuous portrait of a nation awakening to freedom packs a serious emotional punch.
