Usually, the roughly 60 singers from more than 15 countries in the Chor zur Welt sing a diverse programme with music from all the home regions of its members. But this time, fittingly for the focal point of the 2024/25 season, Brazil is the focus of the Elbphilharmonie’s participatory ensemble. More specifically, »música popular brasileira« (popular Brazilian music), »MPB« for short and also affectionately referred to as »nossa música« (our music) by Brazilians.

Hailed as “one of the greatest songwriters of the century” by The New York Times, Grammy Award-winner Caetano Veloso has been a major musical, social, and cultural force in Brazil for decades. Veloso began his career interpreting bossa nova songs and was an early contributor to the Tropicália movement. His highly-anticipated album, Meu Coco, marks his return after a nearly decade-long hiatus. The album takes listeners on a journey into Veloso’s creative process, and provides a glimpse into how he crafts his songs.

A towering figure in popular music around the globe—and national hero to many at home—Brazilian virtuoso Caetano Veloso returns to BAM with Meu Coco, his first album in nine years. Over an illustrious five-decade career, the father of Tropicália has proved himself as both a piercing social commentator and a romantic balladeer, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, and Brazilian modernist poets. Playful, tender, and uncompromising, this new album finds Veloso as original as ever.

Alongside comrades like Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, and Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso is one of the architects of the paradigm-shifting tropicália scene that integrated the sounds of their native Brazil—the rhythms of the state of Bahia, the hushed bossa nova of Joao Gilberto, the soul of samba—with the exploratory ethos of psychedelic rock. In the decades since, he's never stopped innovating, and has become not only one of the greatest songwriters Brazil has ever produced, but one of the greatest songwriters alive anywhere--something he proved once again on his beautiful 2021 album Meu Coco, which The Washington Post called “unsurprisingly gorgeous, adventurously polyrhythmic.”
