Ninety years after Florence Price became the first Black woman to have a symphony played by a major orchestra, her Symphony No. 1 still stands out as a marvel of American identity in how it reflects the musical traditions of enslaved and native populations. This program kicks off with dances rooted in the folksongs of Hungary, and it features BSO Concertmaster Jonathan Carney performing Bruch’s beloved Violin Concerto No. 1, with its fiery finale channeling the rustic fiddling of central Europe.

The dramatic dynamism of the duo form is spotlighted in the first half of this program, which features two vastly different works: Mozart’s perfectly crafted Duo in G Major, performed by violinist William Hagen and violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, and Kodály’s thrilling and demanding Duo for Violin and Cello, played by Leila Josefowicz and Paul Watkins. Mozart is featured again in the second half, as his exquisite Clarinet Quintet showcases the soaring artistry of clarinetist David Shifrin and the Escher String Quartet.

The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma, beloved by SPAC audiences, returns to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto under the baton of conductor Xian Zhang. Opening the evening are two SPAC premieres by composers Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Zoltán Kodály.

Dive into the majestic world of Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring Suite, a collection of movements compiled from the ballet under the same name, this orchestral gem captures the essence of the American landscape with its lush melodies and evocative harmonies. The orchestral suite is cast in eight uninterrupted sections, opening with a slowly blooming introduction before the unison strings burst into an elated Allegro, setting the stage for a journey through the sprawling wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains. Featuring a set of variations on the beloved Shaker tune “Simple Gifts,” the suite takes you on a captivating musical adventure, where every note paints a vivid picture of nature’s beauty and tranquility.
