Isabel Leonard brings her smoldering take to the Met for the first time, opposite tenors Michael Fabiano and Matthew Polenzani, and Aigul Akhmetshina, praised by The New Yorker for the “fresh, ferocious energy” of her Carmen in the 2023–24 season, reprises her star-making portrayal, alongside tenor Michael Fabiano.

The Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the ensembles offered by the Göppingen Municipal Youth Music School. It has won prizes in numerous competitions and is regularly invited to take part in international festivals. At the IX New York International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, the Göppingen Youth Orchestra was awarded the gold medal. The ensemble has been featured on radio and television on numerous occasions. The conductor has been Martin Gunkel, City Music Director since 1989. The ensemble aims to promote children and young people's musical development and offer them the opportunity to play sophisticated orchestral music through the development of traditional and modern orchestral works. Furthermore, national prizewinners of the "Jugend musiziert" competition are given the opportunity to perform as soloists in concerts. Concert tours and international youth exchanges have taken the Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra to Spain, France, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Great Britain, and the USA on numerous occasions.

Georges Bizet’s titular heroine is as captivating a character as any in the history of opera. The different interpretations of Carmen are legion: we have the seductress, the personification of forbidden yearning, the standard bearer for the “eternally female” in the brutal battle of the sexes, the anarchist unfettered by bourgeois angst and compulsions, the archaic clairvoyante seeing her own death in the cards - yet free, as she does not dread her destiny. Few opera heroines are so open to interpretation and hence so able to serve as a mirror held up to society.

The twentieth-century French composer Francis Poulenc has been characterized as half monk, half “bad boy,” equally at home in the cathedral service and the cabaret show. Tonight’s program belongs to Paris altogether, really – including the beloved tone-poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas, made famous in Walt Disney’s Fantasia.

«L'amour est un oiseau rebelle», sings Carmen in Georges Bizet’s opera of the same name. Mats Ek, the Swedish dance legend, made Carmen the heroine of a ballet at the Cullberg Ballet in 1992. He based it closely on the novella by Prosper Mérimée, which also forms the basis for the opera, in which Don José tells the story of Carmen from his death cell. Playing with classic gender roles, Mats Ek avoids common Carmen clichés and finds a deeply human interpretation. Another strong female figure is at the center of Dani Rowe’s choreography. After a career as a dancer with the Australian Ballet and the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Australian-born choreographer now heads the Oregon Ballet Theater. She is creating her first choreography for the Ballett Zürich, set to the music of Mussorgsky’s «Bilder einer Ausstellung», in the orchestral version by Maurice Ravel.

Composed in 1859 while Bizet, aged twenty, was staying at the Villa Medici, Don Procopio is a light and sparkling opera in the tradition of bel canto and Italian comedy. Inspired by Donizetti's Don Pasquale and influenced by Rossini, it blends social satire with musical vivacity.

The plot, set in Naples, tells the story of a young woman who thwarts the plans of her uncle, who wants to marry her off to an old miser to preserve his fortune. She will seek to ridicule the plotters in order to impose her own destiny, in a joyful ending.

In a Beethoven-Bizet program, star pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will present Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto. adventurer and author Prosper Mérimée wrote it in 1845. The famous music from Georges Bizet's opera resonates in Tscho Theissing's sophisticated arrangements. The wonderful melodies that Bizet wrote for Carmen and Don José remain virtually unchanged, but are arranged here for just three—albeit phenomenal—musicians, who are occasionally allowed a brief excursion into the musical present.

This is where Widor himself premiered his 6th organ symphony: The 5-movement symphony, which we here in Odense present on the Carl Nielsen Hall's concert organ; built by Marcussen & Søn.
Charles Bizet was a child prodigy, but died early, already at the age of 36. Before that he had composed one of the world's greatest operas, Carmen, among many other things.

A suddenly awakened desire throws Sergeant Don José off his usual path. A woman who unexpectedly throws a flower at his feet gives him access to a world he had previously closed off to. The woman's name is Carmen, and she is a social outsider. What she wants, she takes; when she loves, she does so with every fiber of her being. A coincidence brings Carmen and José together, or perhaps a misunderstanding. For José, erotically inexperienced, believes that the flower thrown at him has attracted Carmen's attention. To be with her, he accepts military demotion and imprisonment; in fact, he ultimately risks his entire civil existence for a relationship with Carmen. But after a short time, she has had enough of him and wants to break up with him. Carmen uncompromisingly asserts her right to freedom and self-determination.

George Bizet's timeless work, Carmen, combines a powerful theme with absolutely iconic music. One emotional melody follows another, and you can hear the colourful orchestras, the sophistication of the parts, the rhythmic dances and the songs.

Czech mezzo-soprano Ester Pavlů will perform as Carmen. She belongs to the role, both on domestic and European stages, just like a red rose.

Don José will be played by the most sought-after tenor of today, Joseph Calleja. It will be his first appearance at the Krumlov Festival.

The trio of exceptional voices will be joined by the local baritone Svatopluk Sem.

The success story of one of the world's most renowned brass ensembles, Canadian Brass, has been going strong for over 50 years. Collaborative creativity, individually accomplished musical talent, and the desire to explore all the possibilities of a pure brass ensemble have characterized this ensemble since its founding in 1970. The musicians amaze with the unexpected facets of their instruments, their humorous entertainment, and they don't take themselves or their music too seriously. With their varied program, ranging from traditional pieces with an Iberian flavor to well-known melodies from Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen," they transport audiences to our focus country, Spain.

Where the emperor once strolled, we are preparing the large Kurpark stage for an evening with Spanish flair: In a beautiful atmosphere, tenor Rolando Villazón and mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez, together with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid under the direction of Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra, will present a classical night with a Spanish repertoire that can only be experienced in this form here. Of course, works by Manuel de Falla and parts from Georges Bizet's "Carmen" will be included – a dazzling work that has lost none of its popularity and expressive diversity to this day. But singing isn't the only thing that plays a role this evening: with Spanish orchestral works, the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid will demonstrate all of its talent and transport the audience to Southern Europe with its sounds. Fans of Spanish music culture and all those who aspire to become fans of Spanish music culture should definitely not miss this open-air classical music event in Wiesbaden's Kurpark!

“From Bohemia to the end of the world” – that's how one could articulate the successful artistic career of tenor Petr Nekoranec, who made his debut in South Africa in August 2024 while in March 2025 he will travel to Brisbane, Australia to make his debut in the Queensland opera house as Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La cenerentola. Petr was born in Nové Dvory by the City of Polná, studied singing in Pardubice, Munich, and New York, performed in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bayreuth, Florence, Teatro Real in Madrid, Warsaw, São Paulo, Brazil, etc. He is also a popular guest of French opera houses such as the Théâtre du Capitole v Toulouse a Opéra national de Lorraine v Nancy. In July 2024 he made his debut at the famous festival in Aix-en-Provence. He is a soloist at the National Theatre Opera, where he added his first ever Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème in the 2024/25 season to the roaster of his many beautiful roles.

One of ClassicFM’s “30 under 30” Rising Stars, Violist Jordan Bak performs Carl Stamitz’s Viola Concerto. First discovered and performed in the 1930’s, Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major was completed when the composer was just 17 years old. Beethoven’s only full-length ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus, was one of his first works to be performed in the United States. Source Code by Jessie Montgomery centers on a melody based on syntax derived from Black spirituals.

A warm southerly breeze blows through the palace courtyard: At its second Ludwigsburg open-air concert, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, together with Colombian-American conductor Lina González-Granados and Spanish violinist Leticia Moreno, creates an atmospheric "Spanish Night." The orchestra begins by transporting the audience to Seville, the setting of "Carmen." George Bizet's interpretation of a "Spanish" musical language resulted in many catchy melodies that quickly became audience favorites. Less popular, however, is Maurice Ravel's highly virtuosic concert rhapsody "Tzigane" – a piece of cake for the finger-tapping acrobat Leticia Moreno, who also shines expressively in Camille Saint-Saëns' virtuoso piece. With excerpts from the ballets "El amor brujo" (Love Spell) and "The Three-Cornered Hat" by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leads the visitors of the "Spanish Night" in the palace courtyard on an exhilarating journey to the musical fireworks of the Blooming Baroque.

A work of youth, another of absolute youth: if Beethoven is 34 years old at the time of this instrumental feast that is the Triple Concerto , where each soloist gives his all in his part, Bizet is exactly half his age (17 years old!) when the miracle of his Symphony in C is accomplished  ; a page full of sunshine and languid reveries, where the National shines naturally.

Georges Bizet passed away 150 years and a few days ago, barely older than his beloved Mozart. A clear genius and cursed creator, as if killed by the myth of Carmen that precipitated his fall, he leaves an indelible mark on our heritage, an innate colorist, a magical melodist, a passionate lover of the stage. "This music seems perfect to me. It moves forward, light, supple, polished. It is amiable, it does not sweat," praised Nietzsche. The Orchestre National de France celebrates him as it should, between Giuseppe Verdi and Ambroise Thomas.
