Carmen lives a bohemian life, seeking freedom outside of the law. José, drawn to Carmen and this unconventional world, is torn between love, duty and honour. Micaëla, innocent and pious, represents a simpler way of life and the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo soon becomes a rival for Carmen’s affections. Morales, the captain embodies everything that the Gypsies, Frasquita and Dancaire are not. The concert opens with the stirring notes of The Star-Spangled Banner, followed by the elegant Polonaise from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and the dramatic Overture to Verdi's Nabucco. Audiences will be captivated by the serene Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and the vibrant selections from Bizet's Carmen. The program also features Valerie Coleman's Seven O’Clock Shout, Copland's Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down from Rodeo, and Gershwin's selections from Porgy and Bess, arranged by Bennett. 

In addition, the Symphony will perform a tribute to Frank Sinatra with Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, arranged by Moss, and honor the armed forces with Armed Forces Salute, arranged by Lowden. The concert concludes with Sousa's iconic Stars and Stripes Forever, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Tchaikovsky struggled to complete Souvenir de Florence – but you wouldn’t be able to tell. A work inspired by fond memories of time in Italy, the piece came at the height of the composer’s career, and its power and passion really stop you in your tracks. Here, it sits in between the Overture from Rossini’s comic opera The Barber of Seville – a piece whose high energy and drama even inspired a 1950 episode of Looney Tunes – and Bizet’s impressive Symphony in C, a work the composer created when he was just 17 years old.

Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

Full of passion, anger, and struggle, the alluring music and human storytelling of Carmen is timeless. Reimagined over centuries through theater, film, opera and dance, the story revolves around a powerful but tragic female heroine. Jorma Elo’s version, set to the iconic score by Rodion Shchedrin after Georges Bizet, is a whirlwind of dance as technically ravaging as it is emotionally.

While known for his loyalty to composers from his native Russia, Balanchine also displayed a deep affection for French music, as the dances in this program illustrate. The rarely seen Bourrée Fantasque, set to the music of Chabrier, includes romping comedy in the first movement and a blazing finale for the corps de ballet. Errante, originally titled Tzigane after the name of Ravel’s rhapsodic score and last revived for the 1993 Balanchine Celebration, returns in a staging by Suzanne Farrell, for whom it was choreographed in 1975. The evening also includes two disparate dances to Bizet scores: the animated pas de deux The Steadfast Tin Soldier, with its fairy-tale characters who spring to life, and Symphony in C, one of Balanchine’s most brilliant and cherished displays of the variety of classical style.
