Der Japaner Toru Takemitsu setzte mit „Toward the Sea“ 1981 im Auftrag von Greenpeace ein Statement gegen den Walfang und orientierte sich dabei an „Moby Dick“. Ebenfalls ein Seemonster ist der Leviathan, in diesem Fall aus der jüdischen Mythologie. Der neuseeländisch-griechische Komponist John Psathas nutzte die Figur für ein spektakuläres Schlagzeugkonzert für das trommelnde Energiebündel Alexej Gerassimez – und zugleich als Mahnung an den Klimawandel, auf Initiative der UN. Anna Clyne wiederum begreift das Meer als Metapher für das Weibliche. Ihr packendes Stück „Restless Oceans“ schrieb sie für ein reines Frauenorchester; uraufgeführt wurde es zur Eröffnung des Weltwirtschaftsforums in Davos 2019. Eines ihrer Idole dürfte Amy Beach sein: Deren „Gaelic Symphony“ von 1894 ist die erste Sinfonie einer weiblichen amerikanischen Komponistin und erinnert an schottische und irische Volkmusik.

The second concert of our Mozart celebration captures a composer on the move. We meet Mozart as an eight-year-old, dashing off his First Symphony in London. Then he’s in Italy, writing the fun-loving opera Mitridate, rè di Ponto. A stop in France for the fizzing “Paris” Symphony leads us to his later home in Vienna, where he wrote the Piano Concerto No. 20, performed with intensity here by Behzod Abduraimov.

Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1 was performed so often on the same instrument that the keys started to move by themselves, as if played by a dedicated, though invisible, pianist. Holy water wasn’t enough to deter the ghostly musician, so the instrument was packed up and sent to the landfill (ghost included). Isata Kanneh-Mason performs this concerto with LMP, but reduces the chances of witchcraft by playing on a modern piano.

We are thrilled to be joining forces with the Ballet Idaho in October 2024 to produce a unique performance of music and dance together on stage.

The Boise Phil will open the show with a tribute to classical ballet’s most iconic composer, Tchaikovsky, performing The Sleeping Beauty Suite.

In the second act, we will see the music take physical form with two very different choreographic and musical compositions. Opening the act is Terence Marling’s Twice  (Once) set to the gorgeous music of contemporary composer Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms. This is a subtle, yet stirring piece that contemplates the afterlife, drawn from very personal experiences of both composer and choreographer.

Back from their recent tour of Belgium, London’s young musical ambassadors bring another eclectic programme to the Hall, culminating in Elgar's iconic Enigma Variations.

When the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) last appeared on this stage, The New York Times called the performance “nearly indistinguishable from what any fine orchestra out to make an impression at Carnegie Hall might present.” The most notable difference? The “infectious joy evident onstage.” As part of Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW!), celebrating outstanding youth ensembles from around the world, conductor Iván Fischer leads the orchestra and acclaimed pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason in a program that includes Mahler’s First Symphony; Dohnányi’s Variations on a Nursery Tune, Op. 25; and a brisk opening piece by Anna Clyne.

Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. Danz then conquers Villanelle, written by Dukas as a challenging exam piece for horn, sharing the soul and virtuosity of the instrument. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 brings the concert to a rousing “end”—only to quietly resume after four measures of silence, giving Haydn the last word with this classic joke.

The composer and critic Virgil Thomson described Olivier Messiaen’s music as ‘convulsive, ecstatic, cataclysmic, terrifying and unreal’. All converge in the most vibrant and unignorable symphony of the 20th century: Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony. Nicholas Collon and the BBC Philharmonic perform a work that opens up the heavens even as it brings down the house, after the tantalising prospect of a world premiere by Anna Clyne. The Gorgeous Nothings, written specially for the Proms, is the composer’s response to the ‘spellbinding wordsmithery’ of American poet Emily Dickinson, scored for orchestra, amplified voices and real-time electronic processing.

The 2024 Festival season opens with the much-anticipated return of Alisa Weilerstein, whose music “emerges with sunlit clarity” (The Guardian); here Weilerstein performs one of the most breathtaking works for cello. Later: Mendelssohn could not shake the “festive air” of Italy while composing his Fourth Symphony, which he called “ the happiest piece I have ever done.” The program begins with a brief and evocative Masquerade; composer Anna Clyne drew inspiration from promenade concerts held in London’s pleasure gardens and their “exotic street entertainers, dancers, fireworks,” and of course, masquerades.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of classical music as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the renowned conductor Fabio Luisi, presents "LUISI CONDUCTS TCHAIKOVSKY'S FIFTH" at the majestic Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. This special performance is set for Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 6pm, marking the first Symphonic Commissioning Project premiere of the summer at Bravo Vail.

The evening will feature the world premiere of Anna Clyne's "ATLAS for Piano and Orchestra," a piece co-commissioned by Bravo Vail and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and performed by the talented pianist Jeremy Denk. Inspired by the works of German artist Gerhard Richter, "ATLAS" promises to be a piano concerto in all but name, offering audiences a unique and immersive musical experience.

In addition to Clyne's "ATLAS," the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s triumphant Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and beautiful melodies.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a pre-concert talk at 5:15 PM in the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater Lobby, featuring Jonathan Bellman from the University of Northern Colorado as the speaker. Jeffrey Kahane’s cross-genre, cross-disciplinary talents are on full display as he both performs and conducts Ravel’s playful, virtuosic Piano Concerto. On a quest to write enjoyable music, Ravel combines his enthusiasm for jazz with a slow movement so exquisite that it led him to exclaim, “That flowing phrase! How I worked over it, bar by bar! It nearly killed me!” Tolstoy’s comment, “Music is the shorthand of emotion,” sparked Anna Clyne’s miniconcerto for cello. Having given the world premiere of Shorthand in 2022, Festival alumna Karen Ouzounian presides over the Sarasota premiere of this elegiac, mercurial work. The Festival concludes with Brahms’ magnificent Symphony No. 1, a perfect balance of passion and structure that took its composer decades to create.

Ludwig van Beethoven rocked the world of classical music in many ways, and his Symphony No. 9, with its spine-tingling “Ode to Joy,” was a radical work that introduced singing into a symphony for the first time—and what singing it was!

Thirty orchestras will take part in the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The unprecedented national consortium ensures that new works by women composers, each commissioned by the League, will be infused in orchestra seasons to come, with multiple performances throughout the country. The consortium’s initial six lead orchestra-composer pairings were previously announced, with more than eighty orchestras applying for the additional twenty-four spots.

Classical music loves a prodigy. Fresh off his multi-album deal with Decca Records Randall Goosby makes his NSO debut performing Mendelssohn’s masterpiece. Thomas Wilkins also conducts a new work by Anna Clyne and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, which features the ever-popular “Nimrod.”

Conducted by Eric Jacobsen, The Knights are “one of Brooklyn’s sterling cultural products … known far beyond the borough for their relaxed virtuosity and expansive repertory” (The New Yorker). From classical staples to genre-expanding works by today’s top composers, they offer an irresistible feeling of comradery and artistic possibility. Hear Mozart’s Symphony No. 31; an original orchestration of Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 2; a New York premiere by the “ingenious” Anna Clyne (BBC Music Review), featuring The Knights’ own Karen Ouzounian; and selected works by singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane, including the New York premiere of a piano concerto written for his father, renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane.

The programme includes the exciting dancing textures created by pioneering multi-layered tape pieces such as Steve Reich’s Violin Phase and Vermont Counterpoint. Richly complex patterns create compelling listening in Julius Eastman’s Joy Boy and modern New York icon Julia Wolfe’s East Broadway. We’ll look to the British version of the movement with Michael Nyman’s captivating In C Interlude while the weaving melodies hypnotise in Anna Clyne’s Just as they are. The concert will close with a performance of Gavin Bryars’ extraordinary Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, in celebration of the composer’s strong links to Portsmouth in his highly experimental ensemble the Portsmouth Sinfonia.

Audience favorite pianist Natasha Paremski returns to the Ohio Theatre with Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a dazzling work inspired by Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for violin. Witold Lutosławski began work on his first symphony while living in occupied Warsaw in the early 1940s. Perhaps reflecting these harsh conditions, this energetic and complex work was banned by the Polish government shortly after its premiere and was not performed again for a decade.

A program of color: It opens with Anna Clyne’s Color Field, inspired in part by the vibrancy of a Mark Rothko painting. Followed by Richard Wagner’s ecstatic Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, and Franz Liszt’s Prometheus. The program closes with Alexander Scriabin’s Prometheus, Poem of Fire. When Alexander Scriabin’s wrote Prometheus, Poem of Fire, he conceived of a “light organ” that would project colors corresponding to his music. Prometheus premiered in 1911 with future BSO Music Director Serge Koussevitzky, whose 150th birthday year we celebrate in 2024.

Originally commissioned and created for our 90th Anniversary, Possokhov’s Violin Concerto reimagines Stravinsky’s celebrated score with a fresh and bold interpretation. Steeped in classical vocabulary that shows off the steely technique of our dancers, it was met with standing ovations and rave reviews as a standout piece of the next@90 festival.

A crowd-pleaser from our next@90 festival, Rowe’s MADCAP was decidedly dubbed a “triumph” by the San Francisco Chronicle. It features Rowe’s love of storytelling and theatrics as she masterfully dissects the anatomy of a clown. Hagström’s eerie, carnival-inspired score transports us into Rowe’s sinister world of the clown after the circus lights go dark.

GATEWAY TO THE SUN
Former SF Ballet Principal Dancer Nicolas Blanc returned to our studios to create this poetic and moving ballet in five movements, set to celebrated contemporary composer Anna Clyne’s exquisite score for cello and orchestra. Blanc models Gateway to the Sun after a poem by 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi.

With great vehemence” stands alongside the achingly beautiful Adagietto — a gift to his beloved wife Alma — scored for strings and harp alone, a kind of “resting place” before the grand drama of the finale. Guest conductor Ryan Bancroft leads a programmatic tour de force that explores the complexities of the human experience. Opening with Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms, the lamenting elegy for 15 strings was inspired by the composer’s loss of her mother. Then, the demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 of Sergei Prokofiev is a testament to his technical prowess as both a performer and a composer, as brilliantly displayed by British pianist Isata Kanneh- Mason, winner of the 2021 Leonard Bernstein Award. Full of orchestral colour amid manic passages of virtuosity contrasted by moments of serene, lyrical melodies, the concerto is one of the most popular of the 20th century. Finally, Russian compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, written shortly after the death of Joseph Stalin, is a scathing musical indictment of the terror and violence experienced under Stalin’s regime. Sombre, wrenching emotion dominates most of the piece, until, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it closes with a triumphant climax.

The ensemble’s second winter concert opens with two works by the late Romantic composer Richard Strauss. His Festmusik der Stadt Wien is a thrilling tribute to the City Council of Vienna, who had given Strauss a Beethoven Prize the year prior. Inspired by the music of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, Strauss composed his Serenade, Op. 7 at the age of 17. Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, a vibrant tribute to the 18th-century promenades held in London’s Pleasure Gardens, closes the first half of the concert. Karel Husa’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble concludes the performance with a showcase of the technical and virtuosic abilities of each instrument in the ensemble.

Conductor Anna Rakitina makes her debut with the Symphony for one of the greatest of all late Romantic symphonies, Rachmaninoff’s Second. The second movement’s stunningly gorgeous string melodies are hallmark Rachmaninoff, and the final movement radiates triumphant resolution. Rakitina and the Symphony set the stage one of Rachmaninoff’s most tender and longing miniatures, his famous Vocalise, and Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans, a piece that embraces unity and the power of women.

Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall conducts our annual concert shining the spotlight on an up-and-coming pianist. The phenomenally gifted Janice Carissa takes the stage for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 — premiered in 1784 by one of Mozart’s rising star students. Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, inspired by poetry, makes full use of the spectrum of colors in the orchestra. And Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was penned at the height of WWII as “a hymn to free and happy Man…his pure and noble spirit.”

Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, whose style is lauded as “pristine, lyrical and intelligent” (The New York Times), takes the Jacobs Music Center stage to perform Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Rising star conductor Tianyi Lu takes the podium for this program, which opens with Anna Clyne’s propulsive This Midnight Hour, inspired by the poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire. Written when the composer was just 22 years of age, Aus Italien brings this mid-winter program to a close with Strauss’ vivid depiction of the culture, landscape, and sunshine of Italy.

Travel kindles creativity and self-discovery, and when composer Felix Mendelssohn toured Scotland at the age of 20, his experiences inspired a shining jewel of a memento in the joyful and invigorating Scottish Symphony. One of the great concertos of the 20th century, Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 dances with the irresistible vitality and verve of Hungarian folk music, and spotlights the incredible talents of Concertmaster Yoonshin Song.

Pianist and composer Vijay Iyer’s Human Archipelago, written for cello soloist Inbal Segev, makes use of jazz-like techniques to explore climate change and human migration. George Antheil’s A Jazz Symphony was one of the first American works to fuse jazz and classical music, while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a work of extraordinary rhythmic vitality, has actually been covered by several jazz musicians.

Concert two, Pfeiffer, translates to whistler, and is guest conducted by Andrew Grahms. The Pfeiffer family were settlers in the Big Sur region who loved the land so much that they eventually sold it to the State of California to turn into a State Park. The pieces in this program also show a connection to place and draw from philosophical and poetic ideals; Anne Clyne borrows from a Scottish fiddle tune and draws inspiration from her experiences in Edinburgh for her piece Pivot, Liszt draws from poems by Autran and Lamartine for Les Preludes, and Brahms utilizes the style hongrois (the "Hungarian style") in homage to his friend and collaborator, the Austro-Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim, in his violin concerto featuring violinist and Monterey Symphony concertmaster Christina Mok. Pfeiffer concert is a part of the inaugural California Festival: a celebration of new music, along with 50 other organizations such as the LA Phil and the San Francisco Symphony.
