Masterworks 2 offers an evening of music, written purely for the enjoyment of beauty, juxtaposed with Haydn’s (originally titled) Mass for Troubled Times. Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans presents a pastoral of the natural world including lyrical melodies as well as tempestuous scenes. The second of Brahms’ two serenades is truly music for music’s sake—a tuneful stroll in the concert hall. Paired with these two works, The Lord Nelson Mass was written for the name day of Princess Esterházy, the wife of Haydn’s patron. The Mass honors Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon at Aboukir, just off the coast of North Africa at Alexandria in 1798.

When Martin Fröst is invited as Artist in Residence with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the 2025/2026 season, a signature piece by this extravagant clarinetist is a must: In 1998, the Swede Anders Hillborg wrote his "Peacock Tales" literally specifically for his fellow countryman. In this simultaneously humorous and highly virtuosic clarinet concerto, Fröst's exceptional talent is called upon in several ways. The soloist must not only demonstrate adeptness in all sorts of musical styles from past to present, but also act as a dancer and mime with a mask.

Dance! It's starting again! To kick off the season, Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton presents a refreshing, dance-based program. First – how fitting – childhood memories: Zoltán Kodály spent his early years in Galánta and later incorporated melodies from there into his dances named after the Hungarian town. Then the curtain rises for Anna Clyne , the GSO's new "Composer in Focus," born in England and living in the USA! In her wonderfully elegiac piece "Dance," composed a few years ago, the Belgian Deutsche Grammophon cellist Camille Thomas plays the solo part. Even Johannes Brahms's First Symphony, after much hesitation, was a beginning – and moved Clara Schumann to exclaim, "wonderfully magnificent, quite overwhelming."

The pianist Sunwook Kim has been acclaimed for his sensitivity, brilliance and stylistic confidence – all qualities well-suited to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 4 he performs with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. While the Third is tragic, serious and combative, the Fourth is lyrical, impetuous and playful. 2025 sees the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, so in celebration of his life we take his firecracker Ninth Symphony on the road to Aberystwyth and Bangor this March. Small in scale, but full of humour this symphony came as a surprise to everyone at its premiere, with its touches of slapstick, jaunty themes and spirited dance-like feel.

A consummate musician recognized for her grace, subtlety, and brilliance, Orli Shaham has been hailed by critics on four continents. The New York Times called her a brilliant pianist, The Chicago Tribune referred to her as a first-rate Mozartean, and London's Guardian said her playing at the Proms was perfection. Orli Shaham has performed with many of the major orchestras around the world and has appeared in recital internationally, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. She is the Artistic Director of Pacific Symphony’s chamber series Café Ludwig in California since 2007, and the Artistic Director of the interactive children's concert series, Orli Shaham’s Bach Yard, which she founded in 2010.

Sir Stephen Hough returns to Burlington for a doubleheader of two composers’ first piano concertos. Mendelssohn’s propulsive work is partnered with the East Coast premiere of Hough’s The World of Yesterday, informed by musical sketches he composed for a WWII-era film score. A symphonic poem by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar, whose movie scores include Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Portrait of a Lady, and English composer Anna Clyne’s tempestuous piece round out this concert.

Music Director Stéphane Denève sends a valentine from the SLSO, saying, “Rachmaninoff’s music is a pure expression of love—the ecstasy of love, the light of love.” Nikolai Lugansky, among the supreme Rachmaninoff interpreters, is soloist in the Second Piano Concerto. Tchaikovsky celebrates the passionate connection of Romeo and Juliet, while Anna Clyne uses technology to enhance the sonic splendor of the SLSO. “With music,” says Denève, “we are never alone.”

Violinist Rakhi Singh performs works by Edmund Finnis, Julia Wolfe, Julius Eastman, Alex Groves, and more from her debut solo album, ‘Purnima’. A leading artist in the UK’s exciting contemporary classical music scene, Singh has firmly established her reputation touring with cutting-edge artists such as Phillip Glass, Abel Selaocoe, and the London Contemporary Orchestra. She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of Manchester Collective, the award-winning ensemble known for its daring collaborations and engaging performances in spaces ranging from concert halls to warehouses, nightclubs to festivals.

Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony is a nature-inspired musical story, with each of the five movements depicting a different aspect of nature, such as a babbling brook, a thunderstorm, and a shepherd’s song. With a joyful and optimistic tone, the “Pastoral” Symphony is a celebration of nature’s beauty and power. Plus, Swiss-Canadian pianist Teo Gheorghiu – known for his thrilling playing, dynamic contrasts, lines of expression, leaps, runs, and repetitions – makes his debut with the Symphony to perform Schumann’s only Piano Concerto. Considered a huge talent, at the age of 18 he was the youngest recipient of the prestigious Beethoven Ring, awarded at Beethoven Fest in Bonn, Germany.
