A wonderfully vibrant evening to close the season! Is there a more shimmering, more thrilling piece of exotic music than the Bacchanale from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera "Samson et Dalila"? Hardly. This is followed by
Anna Clyne's "Quarter Days," which premiered only in 2023 and which the new Composer in Focus series describes as a reflection on the passage of time: "both within a minute, a day, the seasons, and even within an entire lifetime." And finally, the then-revolutionary "Symphonie fantastique" by the Frenchman Hector Berlioz, now indestructible as a clever popular hit, is a captivating evening with Nicholas Milton and the Elaia Quartet from Berlin, who know how to shape the profoundly human passage of time into soaring tones!

Its lofty vision, its inexhaustible melodic flow and the lively writing of the solo instrument, playing breathlessly for forty-five minutes, have made Elgar's Concerto a touchstone of the cello repertoire. In 1919, it closed the illustrious career of a composer inseparable from the Victorian era. Could his compatriot Anna Clyne have inherited the passion and pomp of this predecessor? His festive Masquerade , written for the Last Night of the Proms, has something to conquer all audiences. It will be another instrumental celebration with the new concerto for orchestra by the royal Thierry Escaich.

Tempora mutantur — the nickname of Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 — takes its name from the Latin adage, “The times change, and we change with them.” Inspired by this reflection, Finnish conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto presents a dynamic program featuring former Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury alongside folk- and dance-inspired works by Grieg and Rautavaara. Tonight you will hear the Hague premiere of Dance – the highly acclaimed cello concerto by British composer Anna Clyne. As one of the most performed contemporary composers, she drew her inspiration from the mystical verses of Persian poet Rumi. The work’s five movements – focusing on themes such as loss, love and acceptance – demonstrate her ability to translate deep human emotions into music. Cellist Camille Thomas does full justice to the poetic power of the piece.

Following the Second Piano Concerto in November, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony follows. What a work—one that, unfortunately, often remains somewhat overshadowed by many other late-Romantic symphonies! Here, Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton elevates it to the repertoire, allowing its lush sonic power to fully unfold, especially exploding in the final movement. Before that, Elisabeth Brauß revives another fascinating work by Anna Clyne, the Composer in Focus. "Atlas," her first piano concerto, was written in 2023 and was inspired by a publication about the artist Gerhard Richter: "My music responds to the images contained in these four volumes
to create a musical montage and a lucid narrative."

Anny Clyne wrote Masquerade for the London Proms, which she describes as “…a place where people from all walks of life mingle to enjoy a wide array of music…”.  To widen our array of concert offerings, we bring Kurt Weill’s rarely heard second symphony, composed just before his escape to France during the second world war.  It is a must-hear mix of neo classical irony and modernism.  Sergei Rachmaninoff’s third symphony, which the composer called ‘one of my best pieces’, is a masterclass in melody.

This is going to be exciting! In 2021, Anna Clyne created a concerto featuring the saxophone as an unusual solo instrument, transporting us to mythical realms: "'Glasslands' conjures an imaginary world with three realms ruled by the banshee," says Clyne, "a female spirit who, in Irish folklore, announces the death of a family member by howling, shrieking, or wailing, usually in the stillness of the night." The soloist is Asya Fateyeva, a German saxophonist of Ukrainian descent. And Tchaikovsky's Fifth, one of his most popular symphonies, also features predestined events: "Total resignation to fate, or, what amounts to the same thing, to the inscrutable decree of providence," he wrote, referring to the first movement.

Celebrated violinist Gil Shaham showcases “the queen of instruments” in Bruch’s Romantic Concerto. Then, think of Pictures as a musical gallery crawl. Come along as your “mind’s ears” conjure the pictures on exhibit—ten in all, plus “traveling music” in-between—starting with the “Promenade,” as the viewer strides into the gallery. Highlights include eerie Parisian “Catacombs” and “The Great Gate of Kiev,” shaking you with the tumultuous pealing of bells in the grand finale.

This concert conducted by Leslie Suganandarajah demonstrates that the USA has much to offer despite current turmoil. The Sri Lankan-born conductor has been Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater since 2019, where he brings together a broad spectrum of American music.
He begins with Anna Clyne, this season's Composer in Focus of the GSO, followed by the even more recent Trumpet Concerto by the already legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, featuring Selina Ott, born in Austria in 1998, as soloist. And after the interval, a rarity: Florence Price, who made a name for herself at the beginning of the 20th century, was one of the first female composers in the USA.

The evening opens with sharp brass and fast-moving momentum from Wagner’s Die Meistersinger Overture, followed by Anna Clyne’s Glasslands, a vivid saxophone performance. Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 delivers drama and a propulsive conclusion.

Benjamin Britten spoke no Russian and Dmitri Shostakovich spoke no English, but they found in each other a kindred spirit, becoming firm friends, supporters of each other’s work and using a sort of broken German as a shared language. Britten’s tribute to his teacher and mentor Frank Bridge uses each variation to loosely sketch a facet of Bridge’s personality, while Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony was not the grand artistic statement Russia expected and instead is a witty, playful and sarcastic work that inevitably led to political trouble. And we are delighted to welcome Jess Gillam to perform Glasslands by Anna Clyne, inspired by the banshee of Irish mythology.

Four British female composers from different generations and with highly diverse styles: English conductor Jamie Phillips unites top-notch, energetic female power in "Women's Voices/UK." This is especially true of the youngest composer, Laura Bowler. Described in the media as a "provocative, triple-threatening composer-performer," she is considered a "rising star" in the scene. Her work is multidisciplinary, socially critical, and typically expansive.

Masterworks 2 offers an evening of music, written purely for the enjoyment of beauty, juxtaposed with Haydn’s (originally titled) Mass for Troubled Times. Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans presents a pastoral of the natural world including lyrical melodies as well as tempestuous scenes. The second of Brahms’ two serenades is truly music for music’s sake—a tuneful stroll in the concert hall. Paired with these two works, The Lord Nelson Mass was written for the name day of Princess Esterházy, the wife of Haydn’s patron. The Mass honors Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon at Aboukir, just off the coast of North Africa at Alexandria in 1798.

When Martin Fröst is invited as Artist in Residence with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the 2025/2026 season, a signature piece by this extravagant clarinetist is a must: In 1998, the Swede Anders Hillborg wrote his "Peacock Tales" literally specifically for his fellow countryman. In this simultaneously humorous and highly virtuosic clarinet concerto, Fröst's exceptional talent is called upon in several ways. The soloist must not only demonstrate adeptness in all sorts of musical styles from past to present, but also act as a dancer and mime with a mask.

ONN launches the season with an exciting and creative program that offers a compelling exploration of musical wit, theatricality, and transformation across time. Portland Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, inspired by the elegant surprises of Haydn’s string quartets, juxtaposes classical refinement with unexpected turns. Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury, inspired by Haydn’s Symphony No. 60 and Shakespeare’s Macbeth, is imbued with visceral energy and literary allusions that echoes both Shakespearean drama and Haydnesque contrast. At the center of the program stands Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 60, Il Distratto, a masterful fusion of humor and invention, originally composed for the stage. Dance! It's starting again! To kick off the season, Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton presents a refreshing, dance-based program. First – how fitting – childhood memories: Zoltán Kodály spent his early years in Galánta and later incorporated melodies from there into his dances named after the Hungarian town. Then the curtain rises for Anna Clyne , the GSO's new "Composer in Focus," born in England and living in the USA! In her wonderfully elegiac piece "Dance," composed a few years ago, the Belgian Deutsche Grammophon cellist Camille Thomas plays the solo part. Even Johannes Brahms's First Symphony, after much hesitation, was a beginning – and moved Clara Schumann to exclaim, "wonderfully magnificent, quite overwhelming."

When the Belgian-Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin made his debut with the Copenhagen Phil in 2024, it caused a sensation among audiences and critics – so of course he had to be invited back. This time, the world star is the soloist in one of the most emotional works of the Romantic era: Robert Schumann's piano concerto written directly for the composer's wife and muse, Clara. She inspired Schumann to write the so-called Clara motif , which begins the piano concerto as a magnificent tribute to love.
