With two explosive chords, Beethoven’s Eroica symphony launched a new era for music and created a world of limitless sonic potential. It’s revolutionary in every sense, and for our Chief Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth – a composer himself – it’s the natural culmination of a concert filled with sounds that stretch the bounds of possibility. The poetry of Georg Trakl finds a wordless voice in Donghoon Shin’s wild and wonderful new cello concerto (and the young South Korean cellist Jaemin Han has been described as “a staggering talent”). The late Harrison Birtwistle, meanwhile, dives deep into nocturnal melancholy, and finds both terror and beauty: a potent tribute, in what would have been Birtwistle’s 90th birthday year.

As a child prodigy, she was called “one in a million” by conductor Zubin Mehta. As a psychology student, she wrote a master’s thesis on pain. As an activist, she won the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum at Davos and spoke before the U.N. As a performer, she is indomitable, playing dozens of concerts a year. The one and only Midori returns to Aspen for Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto. Bartók wrote the piece in 1938 as Hungary was forming an alliance with Nazi Germany, and it’s often heard as a musical farewell to his native land. The first movement has a dark, brooding atmosphere, the second a dreamy hypnotic character, and the finale is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist full of folk-inspired melodies and rhythmic twists and turns.

Romanian virtuoso Alexandra Dariescu joins the orchestra for Grieg’s famous Piano Concerto, a guaranteed crowd-pleaser adored for its memorable tunes and dramatic flair. And, breathtaking visions of Rome are rendered with a palette of spectacular orchestral colors in Respighi’s beloved Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome.

He leads the LA Phil in the composer’s heroic Third Symphony, with its soaring horns. “One of the most admired pianists of his generation” (The New York Times), Inon Barnatan returns to LA to play Brahms’ massive—and massively powerful—Piano Concerto No. 1, one of the composer’s early hits that makes Herculean demands of the soloist.
