The Medicine in Music is a dramatic comedy filled with relatable characters. These characters will share some interesting information and different perspectives about music. This story is about a mild-mannered Naihla Skye. She is a Black teenage girl that enjoys having as much fun as any girl her age. She finally notices that people in her family are always singing something, playing guitar, making beats or something related to music. She wants to know why they sing or play music so much. She asks each family member one by one, what made music so special to them. After listening to their answers, she sat quietly for a moment, then she started thinking out loud. She finally knew what career she wanted to dive into with both feet. She began singing and dreaming of becoming a famous singer. She was so excited, she decided to share her big dream with family, friends and her favorite teacher. Almost immediately, they shared their strong biased opinions about the type of music she should sing. Their opinions were framed in history, obligation, race, gender, age, and more biased thinking. The opinions of those people she cares about were important to her. Because she was thoughtful and kind, this situation created some overwhelming sadness and anger in this gentle teen. She didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or appear to be rude especially to the grown folks in her life. Eventually, she had to make her own decision regardless of the discomfort it might cause. After some self-discussion, she spoke with her grandfather. Finally, Naihla Skye made a decision. The audience will join in to sing and create rhythms with their hands, feet and other objects to ”This Little Light Of Mine.” This is a well-known uplifting song. The audience will be directed by cast members to sing in different ways, dance, and to represent different genres of music.
