Last seen at the Met in the title role of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo stars as the mythic hero who ventures into the Underworld to rescue his beloved Euridice. Soprano Ying Fang is his ill-fated bride, with soprano Elena Villalón in her company debut as Amore, the god of love who sets Orfeo on his quest. Christian Curnyn makes his Met debut conducting Gluck’s sublime setting of the ancient tale, enlivened by exuberant choreography from the legendary Mark Morris and featuring members of his renowned dance group.

Terence Blanchard’s stirring drama returns following its landmark company premiere in 2021, with bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green starring as Charles, a young man faced with a fateful decision. Soprano Latonia Moore reprises her heartbreaking portrayal as Charles’s mother, Billie, with rising soprano Brittany Renee doing triple duty as Charles’s love interest, Greta, as well as the embodiments of Loneliness and Destiny. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown’s gripping production includes what is surely the only step dance in opera. Evan Rogister conducts Blanchard’s score, which powerfully melds opera and jazz.

Fire Shut Up In My Bones

Lyric Opera of Chicago welcomes Champion, the first opera written by composer Terence Blanchard. Based on a true story and featuring a libretto by Michael Cristofer; the drama unfolds in what composer Terence Blanchard calls “an opera in jazz.” Welterweight boxer Emile Griffith is tortured by the complex realities of his life: decades-long guilt from defeating a challenger in the ring, who died from Griffith’s blows; and desperately conflicted feelings regarding his own sexuality. James Robinson’s production arrives in Chicago with a remarkable cast. Joining Lyric favorites Reginald Smith, Jr., Whitney Morrison, and Paul Groves is Justin Austin, a brilliant new star who triumphed in Fire Shut Up in My Bones, with Music Director Enrique Mazzola leading the Lyric Opera Orchestra.

The first opera that revealed Wagner’s genius, The Flying Dutchman is the story of a young woman’s obsession. Senta dreams of the Dutchman, who’s cursed to wander the earth. He comes ashore every seven years, searching for a woman who will be faithful to him until death. When she meets him, Senta’s fate is sealed. This new-to-Chicago production at Lyric Opera of Chicago will bring to life some of the composer’s most magnificent and emotional music, including thrilling, spectacular choruses. Leading an outstanding cast are Tomasz Konieczny (previously the title role in Lyric’s spellbinding Wozzeck) and Tamara Wilson (the radiant heroine of Il trovatore and Ernani), in Christopher Alden’s electrifying production, with Music Director Enrique Mazzola conducting his first Wagner at Lyric.

The Flying Dutchman

Supreme silliness ensues when Figaro, Seville’s most beloved barber, plays matchmaker for his former employer, Count Almaviva. The Count loves Rosina, but she’s the ward of the devious Doctor Bartolo, who has designs on wedding her himself. To win Rosina’s heart, the Count enlists Figaro to cook up disguises, double dealings, and deceits to fool old Bartolo and set Rosina free. Rossini’s beloved comedy reminds us that sometimes, on the path to true love, the last thing you want to be is yourself.

When Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones opened the Met’s 2021–22 season to universal acclaim, it marked a historic moment in the annals of the company. Now, the six-time Grammy Award–winning composer’s first opera arrives at the Met. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green is the young boxer Emile Griffith, who rises from obscurity to become a world champion, and bass-baritone Eric Owens portrays Griffith’s older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past. Soprano Latonia Moore is Emelda Griffith, the boxer’s estranged mother, and mezzo- soprano Stephanie Blythe is the bar owner Kathy Hagan. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is again on the podium for Blanchard’s second Met premiere, and director James Robinson—whose productions of Fire and Porgy and Bess brought down the house—oversees the staging. Camille A. Brown, whose choreography electrified audiences in Fire and Porgy, also returns.

Thousands lived to sleep…it’s not a fairy tale, but the incredible true story of Dr. Sacks, a young neurologist faced with treating victims of a mysterious sleeping-sickness epidemic of the early 20th century, a phenomenon of history nearly forgotten. Awakenings visits Sacks’ journey of perseverance and compassion that brought his ‘frozen’ patients back to being – but not to the world they left behind. With our current trials, this distinct retelling of the possibility of new life is even more resonant today.

The house is their whole world, and every room is full of ghostly voices and painful memories. As hidden truths about the family’s legacy come to light, Zoe begins to realize that the secrets harbored within these walls are deeper and more profound than she ever dared to imagine.

Experience the timeless romance and heartache of Puccini's "La bohème" at the Santa Fe Opera, from June 27 to August 23, 2025. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Paris, this classic opera tells the story of six Bohemians navigating love, longing, and artistic ambition during a golden age of artistic revolution. With music by Giacomo Puccini and libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, "La bohème" is performed in Italian with instant translation screens in English and Spanish, ensuring an accessible and immersive experience for all attendees.

The opera unfolds in four acts, beginning on Christmas Eve in a cold attic where the poet Rodolfo and painter Marcello struggle to keep warm, leading to encounters of love at first sight, festive celebrations, and ultimately, poignant farewells and heartbreak. The production boasts approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes of captivating music and drama, including a 25-minute intermission.

This 2025 season features an exceptional cast, including soprano Sylvia D'Eramo as Mimì, tenor Long Long as Rodolfo, baritone Szymon Mechliński as Marcello, soprano Emily Pogorelc as Musetta, and more, under the baton of conductor Iván López-Reynoso and direction by James Robinson. The creative team also includes scenic designer Allen Moyer, costume designer Constance Hoffman, and lighting designer Duane Schuler, promising a visually stunning rendition of this beloved opera.

Performances are scheduled throughout the summer, offering multiple opportunities to witness this masterpiece at one of the most beautiful outdoor venues in the United States.
