Arguably the sexiest role in opera, Carmen (Virginie Verrez) is a beautiful, free-spirited woman all too aware of her allure, and yet, she despises any man who falls for her. When her mild flirtation with a soldier, Don José (Richard Trey Smagur), ignites his flaming desire, Carmen rejects him for the famous bullfighter, Escamillo (Seth Carico). José’s childhood sweetheart, Micaëla (Raquel González), visits on the pretext of persuading him to return home to his elderly mother, but she arrives just too late. José only has eyes for Carmen. His fate—and Carmen’s—has already been sealed.

Following his acclaimed 2019 performances as Alberich in the Ring cycle, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny stars as the accursed Dutchman in Wagner’s eerie drama, alongside incandescent soprano Elza van den Heever as the woman determined to redeem his soul. Maestro Thomas Guggeis makes his company debut on the podium, with tenor Eric Cutler as Erik and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Daland in François Girard’s ghostly setting.

There is no greater expression of humanity in music than Beethoven’s choral symphony, culminating with the Ode to Joy. It became the lodestar for everything that followed, including the romantic outpourings of Wagner. The boisterous Mastersingers overture is paired with the song-cycle that was inspired by the passionate poems of his muse at the time, Mathilde Wesendonck.
