Julius Caesar and Cleopatra are one of the most famous love couples in human history. It's no wonder, then, that artists from all disciplines—from art to theater to film—have been inspired by the passionate relationship between the Roman general and the Egyptian pharaoh. The most impressive musical interpretation was achieved 300 years ago by George Frideric Handel in his opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto," which, with its rich instrumentation and numerous musical ideas, remains one of the milestones of Baroque heroic opera. Now, the work will be performed for the first time in concert at the Elbphilharmonie with a prominent cast.

After Mozart left Salzburg for the first time in 1777, radical changes occurred in his life: He had a groundbreaking encounter with Haydn, who became his friend, and Mozart became acquainted with Munich and the Mannheim Orchestra. Added to this were his unhappy love affair with Aloysia Weber, a disappointing stay in Paris, and the tragic death of his mother. Mozart returned to his birthplace and, with a heavy heart, once again entered the service of Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. But he had changed profoundly as a person. The great vocal works he now composed are permeated by the spirit of the Enlightenment and by the philosophical and aesthetic currents that were then stirring Europe. Zaide marked the beginning of this new aesthetic, which refused any concession to gallant taste and instead explored the truth of the human soul. The fact that Mozart gradually freed himself from all tutelage — he left Colloredo, Salzburg, his father — and subsequently produced dramatic and sacred masterpieces such as Idomeneo (1780-1781), The Abduction from the Seraglio (1781-1782), and the Great Mass in C minor (1782-1783) is directly and unmistakably connected.

By silencing each instrument, one after the other, in the final movement of his Symphony No. 45 , Joseph Haydn redoubles his irony, sending an irritated message to his employer, Prince Estherazy. Mozart, master of ambiguity, moves from prayer to incandescent vocalises in his Exsultate Jubilate , while Schubert's Unfinished and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet give the evening a more somber tone. A farewell evening, marking the end of Michel Franck's term at the helm of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

Poulenc’s devastating tragedy returns, with soprano Ailyn Pérez as the young woman at the center of the harrowing, quasi-historical tale of an order of Carmelite nuns martyred in Paris during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. The remarkable cast also features soprano Sabine Devieilhe in her Met debut as Blanche’s fellow novice Constance, soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as the unshakeable Madame Lidoine, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Mère Marie, and mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in her role debut as Madame de Croissy. Maestro Bertrand de Billy conducts John Dexter’s striking and timeless staging.

On the ruins of an old prison, Persada seeks the truth about her mother, "the woman who sings", whose love once defied the tyrant Soliman. In this singspiel composed in 1780, the young Mozart voices his aspirations to freedom and justice, foreshadowing The Abduction from the Seraglio. Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion bring Zaïde together with other rarely performed works in a humanist fresco created in Salzburg in 2025.

From apocalypse to apotheosis – in his Symphony No. 2, Gustav Mahler delves into one of humanity’s most profound questions: “Why have you lived?” His music traverses light and darkness, full of turmoil, sorrow, intimacy and earthy joy. Mahler pushed the boundaries of the symphony, incorporating folk songs from the cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn and, following Beethoven’s model, a magnificent choral finale. In this work, Mahler said, the listener is “struck down by clubs, only to be lifted to the highest heights on angels’ wings.” Daniel Harding conducts.

This special concert project is dedicated to one of the iconic figures of literary history: Ophelia from Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Between self-empowerment and tragic failure, her fate unfolds in a world dominated by patriarchal power. Conductor Raphaël Pichon weaves together music from Ambroise Thomas's "Hamlet," Berlioz's "Tristia, Op. 18," and Fauré's "Requiem" into a compelling musical portrait that illuminates the various facets of Ophelia's character. Alongside soprano Sabine Devieilhe and baritone Huw Montague Rendall, the Zurich Opera Orchestra and Chorus will perform.
