Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy’s duo debut album combined works by Schubert with the spellbinding Schubert-inspired Trompe-l’œil, which they commissioned from Ukrainian composer Leonid Desyatnikov for the 2023 Aldeburgh Festival and brought to Wigmore Hall soon after. They are joined by the acclaimed Ukrainian-born tenor Bogdan Volkov, Opernwelt’s Singer of the Year 2025, and cellist Adrian Brendel, in a programme that celebrates the creative vision of a composer feted not least for his opera The Children of Rosenthal, scintillating cinema scores and Dichterliebe und -leben, a cycle of songs to the absurdist author Daniil Kharms and avantgarde poet and playwright Nikolay Oleynikov.

The depths of love are the subject of almost all of Mozart's operas – but none as exclusively as in "Così fan tutte." Ferrando and Guglielmo are convinced that their fiancées, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, are faithful to them. The men enter into a bet with Don Alfonso, who intends to prove them wrong with an experiment. But what begins as a harmless game turns into a cruel open-heart experiment... Kirill Serebrennikov's production is radically contemporary; Roberto González-Monjas, chief conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur, guides the audience through Mozart's brilliant yet ambiguous score.

However, he coolly rejects her. When her sister's fiancé dies at Onegin's hands on her name day, he flees society. Years later, the dandy meets Tatyana again, who is now married. Now he suddenly discovers his intense affection for her. Tatyana, however, remains faithful to her husband - Prince Gremin - and rejects the desperate Eugene Onegin, even though she loves him.

In desperation, he buys a supposed love potion from the shady quack Dulcamara - in reality just wine. By chance, Nemorino inherits money and is suddenly desired, which arouses Adina's jealousy. Eventually she realizes her true feelings. In the end, the two find each other and Nemorino firmly believes in the effects of his "elixir".

L'Elisir d'amore

Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem is based on Latin texts and poems by the English poet Wilfred Owen, who died in the war in 1918. At the work’s premiere in 1962 in the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sang alongside British artists: a statement of reconciliation by the composer. The oratorio features a mixed choir, a boys' choir, a symphony orchestra, a chamber orchestra, and vocal soloists. These large forces underline the composer's desire to mobilize all efforts towards overcoming war and violence.

It is one of the classics in the Staatsoper’s repertoire: August Everding’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute. The production is unique for its reconstruction of Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s 1816 set design for what was then the Berlin Court Opera on Unter den Linden – including the legendary starry sky for the Queen of the Night, which has become an icon of scenography and continues to enchant audiences.

In the midst of the Grande Terreur, the community is divided between the prioress Madame Lidoine, who urges humility, and the novice mistress Mère Marie, who preaches martyrdom for the faith. The latter prevails, and before the Revolutionary Guards ban the order, the sisters take their vows - except for the absent prioress and Blanche, who cannot withstand the pressure and flees. When the Camelites, condemned to death for counter-revolutionary conspiracy, go to the scaffold, Blanche joins the condemned.

Dialogues des Carmélites

When Don Giovanni tries to escape his pursuers and conceal his deeds, things get dicey. But in the end, he is called to account by a supernatural force and dragged to hell, while everyone else reflects on the transience of power and the justice of fate. The opera is a captivating portrayal of love, seduction, revenge and moral responsibility.

For her everything is a game – even love – until Alfredo Germont awakens true feelings in her. But this rare happiness only lasts fleetingly for Violetta, who suffers from tuberculosis, and who is first publicly humiliated before passing away.

Based on Gogol’s piece, May Night takes place in a quaint village where the peace is joyfully disturbed by a conflict between a father and his son, the former being opposed to the latter’s wedding. Fortunately, in addition to being charming and fiercely generous, the son is incomparably cunning. Supernatural layers round off the plot: an abandoned house, a lake haunted by a witch, and waters full of magic creatures. Rimsky-Korsakov’s second opera is a fairy tale for all, with humorous twists and turns, ecstatic lovers rendezvousing, and satirical village scenes. Conducted by the dazzling Timur Zangiev, this truly unique piece, replete with charming melodies and traditional music, is making its French debut in a production directed by Christof Loy. Following Peter Grimes and Louise, Christof Loy, who was named Director of the Year at the Opera Awards 2024, tackles this generational conflict with his usual psychological finesse.
