Respighi’s evergreen depictions of towering pine trees around the Eternal City anchor the timelessness of this art form, while the future comes forward in a new work commissioned from hometown hero James Lee III. In Records from a Vanishing City, Jessie Montgomery pines for the gritty, multicultural Manhattan of her youth, spent in her father’s Lower East Side rehearsal studio for rock and jazz bands.

This electric event shines a spotlight on Opera Theatre’s Richard Gaddes Festival Artist and Gerdine Young Artist Programs as these rising opera stars perform iconic melodies from opera’s greatest hits and cherished rarities. Center Stage is curated by Patricia Racette, Artistic Director of Young Artist Programs, and James Robinson, Artistic Director of Opera Theatre. Opera Theatre’s Young Artist Programs are known for launching the careers of many major opera stars, including names such as Jamie Barton, Lawrence Brownlee, Christine Goerke, Erin Morley, Paula Murrihy, Matthew Polenzani, Morris Robinson, Michael Spyres, Russell Thomas, and many more.

Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, the so-called “Symphony of a Thousand” for eight soloists, large chorus, children’s chorus, organ, and orchestra, was the composer’s most ambitious work philosophically as well as musically. Erich Korngold’s Die tote Stadt (“The Dead City”) is an incredibly tender work, embodying the twilight of the Romantic era. Korngold, a remarkable prodigy who later became one of Hollywood’s most important composers, began the opera when he was only 19 and completed it at age 23. It opened simultaneously in December 1920 in Cologne and Hamburg and became one of the biggest operatic successes of the era. The opera’s theme of struggling with the memory of a lost loved one undoubtedly resonated with audiences still traumatized by the recent catastrophe of World War I.
