Tchaikovsky’s so-called “Fate” motif reminds us that we cannot live in the beautiful world of our dreams. “This is fate,” he explained, “that fatal force which hangs above your head like the sword of Damocles, and unwaveringly, constantly poisons the soul.” If fate is the soul’s poison, the Fourth’s shining finale is the antidote. Rarely programmed but undeniably compelling, Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto is among the most challenging pieces in the repertoire. The concerto is an electrifying assemblage of unlikely influences, ranging from Mozart to Stravinsky. SF Symphony Principal Flute Yubeen Kim takes on Ibert’s uncategorizable tour de force.

His last, great symphony in C major "has resonated among us like none since Beethoven's," wrote Schumann, who so deeply revered Schubert's symphonic legacy. With Kent Nagano, it finds a conductor here who, like few others, can open ears anew to this singular masterpiece. Kent Nagano, however, always brings contemporary music to the forefront. He is particularly fond of the music of Henri Dutilleux, who died in 2013 at the age of 97: Dutilleux was considered the last French classic of modernism and a composer who valued lyricism, poetry, and iridescent timbre. And, as is especially true of the cello concerto "Tout un monde lointain…", the virtuosity—the cello, under the hands of Jan Vogler, is required to perform truly acrobatic feats. Yet Dutilleux never lost touch with his listeners. He, who can be considered the heir of Maurice Ravel in particular, once said that for every young composer there is "the moment when he has to, so to speak, kill his father. Perhaps I haven't done that thoroughly enough. But perhaps that's precisely why my music is more accessible to the public. Although it was never my intention to be understood. I'm simply searching for my absolute truth."

Bach's works are of such grandeur and fascination that the choice of instruments on which they are played quickly becomes irrelevant. This is especially true given that Bach himself wrote many pieces for a variety of instruments. The Finnish accordion virtuoso Janne Rättyä was therefore inspired to create unusual Bach arrangements. He also tackled the wonderful piano Petitesses of Henri Dutilleux, as well as Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, which perfectly complement the Hungarian-inspired finale in Brahms's masterful String Quintet.

November, the month of the Radio France Auditorium. Exactly ten years since the birthplace of the four Radio France ensembles opened its doors, and for which an anniversary fanfare composed by Yuki Nakahashi, from the CNSMDP, will ring out. But the other salute of the evening is addressed implicitly to the charismatic Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom Henri Dutilleux dedicated the anthem Slava's Fanfare , in 1989, exactly thirty years after Shostakovich dedicated his First Cello Concerto . It is now Edgar Moreau's turn to defend the colors, during a concert with the feel of a gala.

Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were brand new, and the new as if it were firmly established’.

The Israeli composer Michael Seltenreich, whose latest orchestral work is presented in this concert, grew up in Tel Aviv. Like Lahav Shani, he benefited from an early age from the lively Israeli music scene, whose founding father is considered to be Paul Ben-Haim from Munich. Born as Paul Frankenburger, he left his hometown in 1933 and emigrated to Palestine with the hope of peaceful coexistence between different cultures, religions and ethnic groups. His 1st Symphony was written in the first year of the Second World War and, although the circumstances of the time left their mark on the work, conveys confidence and comfort. In his violin concerto »L'Arbre des songes«, Henri Dutilleux explores the inner interweavings of a dream world. »L'Arbre des songes« is dedicated to the violinist Isaac Stern, the former teacher of Renaud Capuçon. In this work, Dutilleux moves away from conventions, composes in part aleatorically and uses orchestral interludes to counteract the traditional multi-movement structure. The Korean composer Unsuk Chin also questions the way traditions are handled in an ironic and loving way with her short work »subito con forza«, referring to the juxtaposition of symbolic contrasts that is so typical for Beethoven.

The Orchestre National de la France is traveling back in time and, to celebrate its 90th anniversary, is highlighting a few passages from its first concerts in 1934. At the time, Maurice Ravel and Paul Dukas were still very much alive, and while The Sorcerer's Apprentice already seems old, the wave of panic that greeted Boléro at the Palais Garnier in 1928 still stirs minds. Around these symbols, Cristian Măcelaru explores Claude Debussy's Images and, with Baudelairean accents, embraces the worlds of Dutilleux alongside Gautier Capuçon.

He was one of the greatest melodists of all time; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky turned his magic quill upon the fairytale classic Sleeping Beauty and produced an enchanting ballet. The inspiration for Disney’s 1959 animated feature film, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty leans into the sections of the virtuoso Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with soaring lyricism and muscular bombast. The “spellbinding” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser returns for the ravishing cello concerto Tout un monde lointain by Henri Dutilleux. Guest conductor Alpesh Chauhan makes his Atlanta debut.

When the Oslo Philharmonic visits the Elbpihilharmonie, you can hear the sea waving in the background of all three works at this concert: Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Storm, Henri Dutilleux's Cello Concerto, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherazade. Truls Mørk is the cello soloist, and Klaus Mäkelä is conducting.

The Tempest is one of Williams Shakespeare's most distinctive plays and has inspired a long line of composers. Pyotr Tchaikovsky set about the task in 1873 after a suggestion from his mentor Vladimir Stasov - he also wrote music for Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet later. «Does it have to be a storm in The Tempest?» asked the composer Stasov in a letter – he was more concerned with the love story between Miranda and Ferdinand. The answer he got was yes, but Tchaikovsky's orchestral piece had room for both storm and love and for the quiet and angry ocean.

The popular Escher String Quartet, praised by The New York Times for their “passionate performances” and “gorgeous tonal sheen,” plays Dutilleux’s only string quartet—the exhilarating Ainsi la Nuit, whose inspiration includes another work on this program: Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4. In between those pieces, the Escher plays Haydn’s wonderfully evocative Bird Quartet.

The final Artist Showcase of the 2023 Festival features an all-star roster of musicians. Hai-Ye Ni, Principal Cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, is the protagonist of Janáček’s Pohádka (Fairy Tale), which tells the story of a prince who faces a series of tests put to him by the ruler of the underworld. David Halen, Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, shares two favorites by Fritz Kreisler—one of the greatest violinists of all time. Henri Dutilleux’s sparkling Sonatine features Jasmine Choi, the “goddess of the flute” according to The Korea Times. Along with Ni, faculty artists Jennifer Frautschi, Teng Li, Timothy Cobb, and Robert Levin form a supergroup for Schubert’s joyous and supremely melodic “Trout” Quintet.

Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot transports us to France for a program featuring the sublime “Organ” Symphony by Saint-Saëns. Dedicated to Franz Liszt, the Third Symphony is haunting in nature, with the organ adding luscious depth to the orchestral texture. Leading organist and composer Thierry Escaich also performs his own La Barque solaire.

Tito Muñoz conducts this program focusing on the rich and influential French musical tradition, which begins with Debussy’s instantly recognizable Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and culminating with his rapturous La mer, which tells the story of the eternal odyssey of the ocean. Ravel’s beloved Pavane for a Dead Princess evokes a stately dance from a 16th century Spanish court. The dynamic cellist Jay Campbell is soloist for Henri Dutilleux’s Tout un monde lointain…, a meditation on the poet Charles Baudelaire written for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich that evokes a dreamy universe, surging with life and mystery.

The Ciompi Quartet, Duke’s resident ensemble, returns to Baldwin Auditorium with a dynamic program. Night Music—Bela Bartók’s term for music that depicts of the sounds and emotions of the night—is the central episode in the arch form of his Quartet #4. Fifty years later, Henri Dutilleux returned to the same nocturnal landscape in his string quartet Ainsi la nuit. The concert brightens after intermission with Fauré’s setting of Paul Verlaine’s love poetry, which floods the stage with glorious daylight. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, called a ”matchless interpreter of contemporary opera” in Opera News, brings virtuoso musicianship to a collaboration with the Ciompi and Duke colleague, pianist Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė.
