For its grand return to Liège, the Orchestre National de Metz Grand Est presents an evening dedicated to the best of French music from the 20th century. The concert navigates through the impressionist waters of Debussy's "La mer," from the gentle lapping of the waves to the stormy tempests, ventures into the whimsical and fateful whirl of Ravel's "La valse," breathes in the evening scents of Lili Boulanger, and plunges into the Baudelairean universe of Dutilleux's Concerto, with the passionate Edgar Moreau at the cello. Under the baton of Belgian conductor David Reiland, known for his mastery of color and rhythm, the evening promises to be an elegantly orchestrated journey.

The Israeli composer Michael Seltenreich, whose latest orchestral work is presented in this concert, grew up in Tel Aviv. Like Lahav Shani, he benefited from an early age from the lively Israeli music scene, whose founding father is considered to be Paul Ben-Haim from Munich. Born as Paul Frankenburger, he left his hometown in 1933 and emigrated to Palestine with the hope of peaceful coexistence between different cultures, religions and ethnic groups. His 1st Symphony was written in the first year of the Second World War and, although the circumstances of the time left their mark on the work, conveys confidence and comfort. In his violin concerto »L'Arbre des songes«, Henri Dutilleux explores the inner interweavings of a dream world. »L'Arbre des songes« is dedicated to the violinist Isaac Stern, the former teacher of Renaud Capuçon. In this work, Dutilleux moves away from conventions, composes in part aleatorically and uses orchestral interludes to counteract the traditional multi-movement structure. The Korean composer Unsuk Chin also questions the way traditions are handled in an ironic and loving way with her short work »subito con forza«, referring to the juxtaposition of symbolic contrasts that is so typical for Beethoven.

He was one of the greatest melodists of all time; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky turned his magic quill upon the fairytale classic Sleeping Beauty and produced an enchanting ballet. The inspiration for Disney’s 1959 animated feature film, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty leans into the sections of the virtuoso Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with soaring lyricism and muscular bombast. The “spellbinding” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser returns for the ravishing cello concerto Tout un monde lointain by Henri Dutilleux. Guest conductor Alpesh Chauhan makes his Atlanta debut.

When the Oslo Philharmonic visits the Elbpihilharmonie, you can hear the sea waving in the background of all three works at this concert: Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Storm, Henri Dutilleux's Cello Concerto, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherazade. The Tempest is one of Williams Shakespeare's most distinctive plays and has inspired a long line of composers. Pyotr Tchaikovsky set about the task in 1873 after a suggestion from his mentor Vladimir Stasov - he also wrote music for Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet later. «Does it have to be a storm in The Tempest?» asked the composer Stasov in a letter – he was more concerned with the love story between Miranda and Ferdinand. The answer he got was yes, but Tchaikovsky's orchestral piece had room for both storm and love and for the quiet and angry ocean.

The popular Escher String Quartet, praised by The New York Times for their “passionate performances” and “gorgeous tonal sheen,” plays Dutilleux’s only string quartet—the exhilarating Ainsi la Nuit, whose inspiration includes another work on this program: Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4. In between those pieces, the Escher plays Haydn’s wonderfully evocative Bird Quartet.

The final Artist Showcase of the 2023 Festival features an all-star roster of musicians. Hai-Ye Ni, Principal Cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, is the protagonist of Janáček’s Pohádka (Fairy Tale), which tells the story of a prince who faces a series of tests put to him by the ruler of the underworld. David Halen, Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, shares two favorites by Fritz Kreisler—one of the greatest violinists of all time. Henri Dutilleux’s sparkling Sonatine features Jasmine Choi, the “goddess of the flute” according to The Korea Times. Along with Ni, faculty artists Jennifer Frautschi, Teng Li, Timothy Cobb, and Robert Levin form a supergroup for Schubert’s joyous and supremely melodic “Trout” Quintet.

Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot transports us to France for a program featuring the sublime “Organ” Symphony by Saint-Saëns. Dedicated to Franz Liszt, the Third Symphony is haunting in nature, with the organ adding luscious depth to the orchestral texture. Leading organist and composer Thierry Escaich also performs his own La Barque solaire.

Tito Muñoz conducts this program focusing on the rich and influential French musical tradition, which begins with Debussy’s instantly recognizable Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and culminating with his rapturous La mer, which tells the story of the eternal odyssey of the ocean. Ravel’s beloved Pavane for a Dead Princess evokes a stately dance from a 16th century Spanish court. The dynamic cellist Jay Campbell is soloist for Henri Dutilleux’s Tout un monde lointain…, a meditation on the poet Charles Baudelaire written for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich that evokes a dreamy universe, surging with life and mystery.

The Ciompi Quartet, Duke’s resident ensemble, returns to Baldwin Auditorium with a dynamic program. Night Music—Bela Bartók’s term for music that depicts of the sounds and emotions of the night—is the central episode in the arch form of his Quartet #4. Fifty years later, Henri Dutilleux returned to the same nocturnal landscape in his string quartet Ainsi la nuit. The concert brightens after intermission with Fauré’s setting of Paul Verlaine’s love poetry, which floods the stage with glorious daylight. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, called a ”matchless interpreter of contemporary opera” in Opera News, brings virtuoso musicianship to a collaboration with the Ciompi and Duke colleague, pianist Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė.

Carlos Conducts Ravel’s Boléro

Based around Ravel’s Miroirs suite for solo piano, the program includes responses to the suite’s five movements in more contemporary repertoire. Chinese-American pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu has been praised as “one of the most exciting pianists of our time… a deep thinker, thoroughly in command” (The Arts Desk). Recently winning BBC Music Magazine’s 2024 Newcomer Award, he is establishing an international reputation as a fearless and probing interpreter of a wide array of music, combining “stunning virtuosity” (Boston Music Intelligencer) and “phenomenal technique with a profound sense of interpretative clarity” (Apple Music).

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Gießen City Theater this time under the direction of conductor Delyana Lazarova and with hr solo cellist Peter-Philipp Staemmler, as well as another attractive, colorful program. The young Bulgarian-born Delyana Lazarova will not only bring to life Lili Boulanger's touching orchestral music, but also the nighttime world that oscillates between reality and dream in the cello concerto by the French sound magician Henri Dutilleux. She will also sonorously stage Beethoven's dynamic and harmonic contrasts in his 2nd Symphony, in which the despair over his increasing deafness and isolation is not at all noticeable.
