In Manhattan, a generation after the height of the AIDS epidemic, Eric, a sensitive soul, and a talented yet self-destructive writer, Toby, share a turbulent love affair that tears everyone around them apart. While the United States, where Trump wins the presidency, is becoming more and more polarised, the world around them seems to be collapsing.

At first glance, Sibylle and Daniel, portrayed by Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Mikkel Arndt, seem to lead an idyllic yet somewhat mundane family life, complete with respectable careers, a stylish apartment and two young children. One night, Daniel's ex-girlfriend Franziska, played by Julie Agnete Vang Christensen, suddenly appears. She becomes the catalyst for an explosion in what turns out to be an already strained relationship between Daniel and Sibylle, whose children have long been hostages in their trench warfare. Daniel chose Sibylle over Franziska, because she was the stable and sensible choice, but perhaps he chose wrongly?

As the 20th century dawns, the Barrison Sisters enchant Europe with their bold dances and saucy songs. They awaken hidden fantasies within the bourgeoisie and challenge societal norms regarding gender and sexual morality. At the same time, their advocacy for women's emancipation enrages the conservative defenders of traditional values, resulting in a wake of rumours, lawsuits, jealousy and suicides.
