Pianist Awadagin Pratt joins Daniel Hope and New Century for this program of potent 20th century American works for strings that speak to our collective emotions. Coping with the senselessness of war is the heartbeat of the program’s first half, with composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson confronting his concerns about the Korean War through his work Grass. In contrast, composer David Diamond wrote his exuberant work Rounds to dispel the gloomy wartime mood of the 1940s in vivid fashion. The program closes with Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium), an epic work for solo violin, strings and percussion inspired by the ancient Greek debate over love in its many forms.

Join us for an enchanting evening of piano music as Emma Truong, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Sylvia Wang, takes the stage at the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall. The program for the evening includes a selection of pieces that span a range of emotions and styles, highlighting the depth and versatility of the piano repertoire. Audiences will be treated to Claude Debussy's "Étude No. 8 Pour les agréments" and "La cathédrale engloutie" from Préludes, Book I, showcasing Debussy's impressionistic touch. The recital will also feature Franz Liszt's introspective "Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude" from Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, and Olivier Messiaen's evocative "Première communion de la Vierge" and "Alouette calandrelle" from his respective works, offering a glimpse into Messiaen's unique musical language.

Further enriching the program, Emma will perform Amy Beach's "Hermit Thrush," Op. 92, and Florence Price's "Clouds," pieces that reflect the composers' deep connection with nature and the American musical landscape. The recital will also include "mountain and bird" by Leo Discenza and Vítězslava Kaprálová's "Dubnová preludia (April Preludes), Op. 13," adding a contemporary and international flavor to the evening.

DPAA honors Black Music Month by celebrating African American musical traditions. Florence Price, the first Black woman to receive national attention as a symphonic composer, blends Joplin-esque ballroom and ragtime idioms into her Dances. Dvořák’s New World Symphony embraces Black folk music, fusing it with the composer’s Bohemian heritage. On the second half of the program, a community choir joins the orchestra to recognize and recount the African American experience in song.

Virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang returns to NatPhil for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in a program conducted by Maestro Piotr Gajewski. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece of romantic music with soaring melodies and lush harmonies that make it one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Paired with the concerto on the first half of the program is Cuban-born composer Tania León’s Ácana, inspired by Cuban Laureate Poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem dedicated to the towering ácana tree, an essential force in Cuban life and society. León received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music and was named a recipient of the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements in 2022.
