This season, several of the DR Symphony Orchestra's own musicians can be experienced as soloists in front of their orchestra, and for this concert it is 1st solo cellist Henrik Dam Thomsen, who has recently won both Danish and international awards for his playing. He is the soloist in Elgar's expressive cello concerto, which for this concert is surrounded by two eerie parties.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's death, Canterbury Choral Society and Youth Choir will perform his popular cantata St Nicolas. This inventive work features dramatic storms and shipwrecks alongside touching scenes from the saint's life, with audience participation in two hymns.

Joining the choir are the world-renowned London Mozart Players, who will also perform two of the finest English works for string orchestra by Elgar and Vaughan Williams.

Together with Holst's moving Psalm 86, this promises to be an evening of rich enchantment and powerful storytelling.

Edward Elgar scored an instant hit with his 1899 Enigma Variations, and he's been captivating new generations with it ever since. Enigma found its way into the films Dunkirk (2017) and The Matrix (1999), as well as the solemn funerals of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II.

1879 – 1899 – 1919: Three compositions from three eras, exactly 20 years apart. But that's not the only thing that connects them. All are closely linked to very specific individuals. With Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravel creates a musical monument to one of the greatest composers of the French Baroque – François Couperin. In his Enigma Variations, Edward Elgar portrays friends and companions. But who lies behind these musical character studies was a mystery for a long time. That has long been revealed, but the magic remains. And Brahms's only violin concerto would be unthinkable without Joseph Joachim. The star violinist not only advised Brahms, he wrestled with him over every note. The result: one of the most popular works in violin literature. At the helm is Finnegan Downie Dear, one of the most promising conductors on the international scene, and the name of violinist Hana Chang is also worth remembering. This is the music of the future. And it sounds spectacular.

Following his sensational success with Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in February 2025, British rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason returns to Hamburg with Saint-Saëns' elegant Cello Concerto. His unprecedented career began with his surprise victory on the television show "Britain's Got Talent" and his subsequent performance by captivating an audience of millions at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Not exactly the usual path for a young graduate of the Royal Academy of Music... Yet the likeable musician and football fan has remained down-to-earth and approachable, enjoying playing with his six siblings as much as with the world's best orchestras. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, for example, will complement the ProArte program with Edward Elgar's masterful First Symphony.

The Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the ensembles offered by the Göppingen Municipal Youth Music School. It has won prizes in numerous competitions and is regularly invited to take part in international festivals. At the IX New York International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, the Göppingen Youth Orchestra was awarded the gold medal. The ensemble has been featured on radio and television on numerous occasions. The conductor has been Martin Gunkel, City Music Director since 1989. The ensemble aims to promote children and young people's musical development and offer them the opportunity to play sophisticated orchestral music through the development of traditional and modern orchestral works. Furthermore, national prizewinners of the "Jugend musiziert" competition are given the opportunity to perform as soloists in concerts. Concert tours and international youth exchanges have taken the Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra to Spain, France, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Great Britain, and the USA on numerous occasions.

Andreas Brantelid is a Danish-Swedish cellist. He began playing the cello at the age of 4 with his father as a teacher, and had his debut concert with the Royal Danish Orchestra at the age of 14, playing Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto. John Wilson is in demand at the highest level across the globe, having conducted many of the world's finest orchestras over the past 30 years. Britten’s Serenade is one of his best loved works and the programme ends with the musical fireworks of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra. Edward Elgar's Serenade in E minor, an early work characterized by chamber music, full of lyrical warmth and subtle melancholy, opens the program, with Tomasz Skweres' "Ligament" serving as its pivotal piece. This work not only mediates compositionally between the evening's pieces but also builds bridges between time, space, and sound. Reconceived each time, it takes up electroacoustically altered motifs from the surrounding works and combines them into a new whole. The classical concert framework is also disrupted spatially: sounds wander through the space, musicians enter the hall from unusual directions—the audience becomes part of a vibrant sonic process.

In the antiphon "O Radiant Dawn," which serves as the theme for this Chorage program, Scottish composer James MacMillan moves from the delicate touch of a ray of light to the rich spectrum of colors of the ever-awakening morning. In MacMillan's "A New Song," a setting of Psalm 96, the choral voices, singing a new day to the Lord, build upon a sustained pedal point, which arguably expresses the life-giving foundation of the earth, where the "primordial light" dwells (heard in Mahler's setting). Organist Stephan Pollhammer unfolds the splendor of daybreak with Reger's powerful Choral Fantasia on the Morning Star.

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will perform its double program at the Kronberg Festival in the Casals Forum, this time under the direction of Michael Sanderling. The first concert features Brahms's "Haydn Variations" and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, performed by the acclaimed violinist Midori. The second concert presents Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt as soloist, as well as Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 4 as the main symphonic work.

Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada’s 16th season leading the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will rousingly begin, as usual, with The Star-Spangled Banner. ECSO Instrumental Competition Winner Nicholas Hammel, a master’s candidate at Yale with degrees from the University of Texas and New England Conservatory, will perform Sir Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B Minor, first performed in 1910. Johannes Brahms’s Haydn Variations, composed in 1873, is also known as the Saint Anthony Variations, since the eight variations are based on a “Chorale St. Antoni” from a piece for winds probably misattributed to Joseph Haydn. Fourteen years later, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his caprice on Spanish themes, Capriccio espagnol, a five-movement suite in which the strings at times imitate guitars. The fourth moment opens with five lively cadenzas, by the trumpets and horns, violin, flute, clarinet, and harp.

Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann leads an unforgettable season debut, opening with the iconic Fanfare for the Common Man, music so poignant, so gripping—so quintessentially American—it colors significant moments in our lives, from Olympic events to memorials. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the “technically flawless and deeply expressive” (The New York Times) cellist Alisa Weilerstein for an autumnal gem by Edward Elgar, and Stutzmann whips up some orchestral muscle for the opulent tone poem Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss.

In this special event, we celebrate Neal Gittleman and the Orchestra. The concert begins with three world premieres by area composers, longtime collaborators, and friends of the Philharmonic Austin Jaquith, Steven Winteregg, and Michael Schelle. Then, in an homage to those onstage and in the audience, Maestro Gittleman leads the orchestra in Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a gorgeous work which Elgar wrote in honor of his own friends.

To celebrate the anniversary of the "Wetzlar Master Concerts," the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Sanderling, will perform at the Wetzlar Town Hall. The program includes Johannes Brahms' "Haydn Variations," the profoundly lush Cello Concerto by the British composer Edward Elgar, and the Symphony No. 4 by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The award-winning German cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt will be the soloist.
