The Columbia University Orchestra with music director and conductor Jeffrey Milarsky returns to Symphony Space for their Fall concert: The Exploration of Sound and Space. The program opens with Lumière et pesanteur composed by Kaija Saariaho who tactfully explores simple melodies and turns them into exotic and malleable textures. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony #10 is a statement of past and future—desperately clinging to traditional romanticism while pressing toward the future. The concert concludes with Edward Elgar’s deeply personal work Enigma Variations which expresses his elegantly poetic and powerful personality through a series of dedicated variations.

Elgar’s Enigma Variations contain one of the most fascinating mysteries in British classical music. Consisting of a theme and 14 variations—some dark and searching, others playful and assertive—the orchestral work builds upon a wistful theme that was written as a countermelody to an unknown piece that Elgar never shared. A century later, no one has cracked the code to the secret tune. Roberto González-Monjas opens the program with another set of variations, this time by Korngold, overflowing with golden harmonies and a folkish warmth.

The Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the ensembles offered by the Göppingen Municipal Youth Music School. It has won prizes in numerous competitions and is regularly invited to take part in international festivals. At the IX New York International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, the Göppingen Youth Orchestra was awarded the gold medal. The ensemble has been featured on radio and television on numerous occasions. The conductor has been Martin Gunkel, City Music Director since 1989. The ensemble aims to promote children and young people's musical development and offer them the opportunity to play sophisticated orchestral music through the development of traditional and modern orchestral works. Furthermore, national prizewinners of the "Jugend musiziert" competition are given the opportunity to perform as soloists in concerts. Concert tours and international youth exchanges have taken the Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra to Spain, France, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Great Britain, and the USA on numerous occasions.

Edward Elgar's Serenade in E minor, an early work characterized by chamber music, full of lyrical warmth and subtle melancholy, opens the program, with Tomasz Skweres' "Ligament" serving as its pivotal piece. This work not only mediates compositionally between the evening's pieces but also builds bridges between time, space, and sound. Reconceived each time, it takes up electroacoustically altered motifs from the surrounding works and combines them into a new whole. The classical concert framework is also disrupted spatially: sounds wander through the space, musicians enter the hall from unusual directions—the audience becomes part of a vibrant sonic process.

This is certainly the case with Elgar’s majestic First Symphony, led in these performances by SLSO Conductor Laureate Leonard Slatkin, who also presents music of his own for a compelling U.S. premiere. Emanuel Ax, Slatkin’s dear friend and one of the most accomplished pianists of our time, takes the solo spotlight for Mozart’s adventurous Piano Concerto No. 25, a masterpiece described by Ax as pure magic.

In the antiphon "O Radiant Dawn," which serves as the theme for this Chorage program, Scottish composer James MacMillan moves from the delicate touch of a ray of light to the rich spectrum of colors of the ever-awakening morning. In MacMillan's "A New Song," a setting of Psalm 96, the choral voices, singing a new day to the Lord, build upon a sustained pedal point, which arguably expresses the life-giving foundation of the earth, where the "primordial light" dwells (heard in Mahler's setting). Organist Stephan Pollhammer unfolds the splendor of daybreak with Reger's powerful Choral Fantasia on the Morning Star.

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will perform its double program at the Kronberg Festival in the Casals Forum, this time under the direction of Michael Sanderling. The first concert features Brahms's "Haydn Variations" and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, performed by the acclaimed violinist Midori. The second concert presents Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt as soloist, as well as Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 4 as the main symphonic work.

Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada’s 16th season leading the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will rousingly begin, as usual, with The Star-Spangled Banner. The three other works on the program all had their premieres—in London, Vienna, and St. Petersburg—with the composer conducting. ECSO Instrumental Competition Winner Nicholas Hammel, a master’s candidate at Yale with degrees from the University of Texas and New England Conservatory, will perform Sir Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B Minor, first performed in 1910. Johannes Brahms’s Haydn Variations, composed in 1873, is also known as the Saint Anthony Variations, since the eight variations are based on a “Chorale St. Antoni” from a piece for winds probably misattributed to Joseph Haydn. Fourteen years later, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his caprice on Spanish themes, Capriccio espagnol, a five-movement suite in which the strings at times imitate guitars. The fourth moment opens with five lively cadenzas, by the trumpets and horns, violin, flute, clarinet, and harp.

Max Richter’s breadth of work is celebrated for its seamless sonic blend of electronic and orchestral elements, making him one of the most streamed classical composers of all time. Launching Anna Lapwood as Hallé Featured Artist for the 2025/26 season, we hear the Manchester premiere of Cosmology, written for the superstar organist, sopranos and altos of the Hallé Choir, and the full forces of the orchestra followed by a luminescent solo performance of Olivia Belli’s Limina Luminis.

A majestic fanfare opens our new season, as the trumpets of Shostakovich’s 1954 Festive Overture herald five-minutes of joyful high spirits.  Its dutiful optimism, composed in just three days in celebration of the 37th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution, would no doubt have felt forced to him, having been harried by the Soviet regime for several years. But it’s hard to resist the overture’s blistering momentum and the soaring nobility of its big tune. The mood of Elgar’s Cello Concerto could hardly be more different; his last major work is a poignant farewell to a world blown apart by the Great War. The acclaimed Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk is our soloist in this emotive dialogue between soloist and orchestra.

Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony glows with light and passion, but also holds undercurrents of anxiety and uncertainty. In a letter to his brother Anatoly, Tchaikovsky wrote: “I am completely preoccupied with the new work and find it difficult to tear myself away from it. I believe it will be one of my best. I must finish it as soon as possible.” And he was right – it is a true symphonic masterpiece.

Renowned for his charismatic personality and bold approach to music, the violinist will perform Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto . The program will be completed by Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations , a subtle work that calls upon a great diversity of orchestral colors, while maintaining an aura of mystery, and Magic Simon by Finnish composer Johanna Ruotsalainen, winner of the 2024 Unanimous Prize in the chamber orchestra category. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) has been invited to perform two concerts at the prestigious George Enescu International Festival this season. Chief conductor Alain Altinoglu will present Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 in the Sala Palatului, followed by Sibelius's Violin Concerto with Austrian violinist Julian Rachlin. The second evening's program features Elgar's Cello Concerto with French cellist Gautier Capuçon, as well as Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World").
