The theme of the 2025/26 Orchestra Unwrapped concerts is centered around the history of the Philharmonia Orchestra, which was founded in 1945 by Walter Legge and celebrates its 80th birthday in 2025. Legge worked for a company called EMI, who was responsible for making recordings of classical music.

The Czech Philharmonic concludes its spring tour in the Bavarian town of Erlangen—known to Czech audiences as "Erlanky." In the modern Heinrich-Lades-Halle, the orchestra presents a signature program of the tour: Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, Elgar’s Cello Concerto featuring Sol Gabetta, and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, under the direction of Semyon Bychkov.

It may come as a surprise, but the Czech Philharmonic has performed in Düsseldorf quite regularly. Over the years, local audiences have heard the orchestra under the batons of Karel Ančerl, Václav Neumann, Zdeněk Košler, Gerd Albrecht, Jiří Bělohlávek, and Semyon Bychkov. Now, Bychkov returns to the city’s Tonhalle with his ensemble, bringing a program of Dvořák, Elgar, and Stravinsky. He’ll be joined by cellist Sol Gabetta.

At the Cologne Philharmonie, the two carefully rehearsed programmes from the April tour will come together in a unique combination. It was England's first major violin concerto. It quickly became clear that it was by no means banal or purely artistic – after all, in his Opus 61, performed here by the British composer Anthony Marwood, Edward Elgar had laid bare nothing less than his innermost being. Even the Finn Jean Sibelius, whose value has long since been fully recognized after initial public skepticism, famously didn't create a single banal bar. His last symphony, premiered in the 1920s, is, like its predecessors, dark and profoundly serious, emotionally gripping, and, with just one movement, formally revolutionary. The second half of the concert, conducted by Anna Rakitina, opens with a cheerful work by the early Haydn: his Symphony
"Morning" features a beautiful sunrise.

"I particularly love the Elgar Concerto," Sol Gabetta confessed in an interview in 2023. The colors, the vocal quality – the wit and the vibrancy that always flash up surprisingly: for the star cellist, everything is simply perfect here. The work had a rather rocky start in musical life: A poorly rehearsed premiere in 1919 damaged its reputation, which was only overwhelmingly restored in 1965 by the very young cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Incidentally, Elgar's Cello Concerto shares the fate of success "at the second attempt" with the second major work in the Czech Philharmonic's program: Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" also initially experienced a resounding scandal as a ballet before beginning its triumphant march on concert stages around the world.

The people of Hamburg are in for a treat. During the Czech Philharmonic’s April tour, they’ll be the only audience to hear both of the programmes the orchestra has prepared. The first of the residency concerts will feature cellist Sol Gabetta performing Elgar’s iconic Cello Concerto. Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov and the orchestra will frame the evening with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Anyone who thinks of Edward Elgar only in terms of Pomp and Circumstance or Last Night of the Proms should listen carefully to his Cello Concerto. There is perhaps no better work to approach the British late romantic composer. He composed this deeply emotional work under the impression of his beloved wife Alice's serious illness and confessed after her death: 'I cannot imagine ever completing another piece. The Cello Concerto was indeed to remain his last major composition. The work has long played an important role in Anastasia Kobekina's life. It is full of hope, she says. It has a desperate desire to fight, and at the same time it has these enchanting moments of joy and lightness. It is the centrepiece of Kobekina's great career, which the Alte Oper has been following closely for several years.

Elgar thought his Violin Concerto among the best of all his works. It highlights the lyrical and expressive powers of the instrument across all three movements, with an unexpected twist in the finale leading to a breathtaking cadenza accompanied by softly plucked strings in the orchestra.

For Igor Levit, there seems to be nothing less than going the whole hog. When he gets involved with a cosmos of works, he does so as intensively as possible. The name Johannes Brahms stands above the worlds in which the exceptional pianist currently prefers to spend his time, and his Brahms interpretations in the celebrated double bill in February 2025 will still be well remembered by Frankfurt audiences. Levit readily admits his deep affection for the music of the Romantic composer, emphasising its emotional richness: "I experience happiness, I experience sadness, melancholy, being in love, loneliness, longing - like a kaleidoscope of what we humans are capable of feeling. Nevertheless, Brahms' monumental First Piano Concerto is always one thing above all else for him: demanding. It takes and takes and takes," says Levit. Together with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, he rises to the challenge - and will allow us to peer into the heart of the notes. Just as Edward Elgar looked into the soul of a close friend in each of his enigmatic ‘Enigma Variations’.

This compelling programme is headlined by the world premiere of Critical Mass by the prominent American-British composer Tarik O’Regan and Mozart’s Solemn Vespers.

Critical Mass, a work commissioned by Wimbledon Choral, centres around the coronation Agnus Dei which was first sung at the coronation of King Charles III. It reflects the spirit of the coronation, combining solemnity and tradition with a sense of vibrant new beginnings.

Elgar's legendary cello concerto requires a virtuoso – and such a virtuoso is Denmark's new cello star, Jonathan Swensen! Not yet 30 and recipient of both the Léonie Sonning talent prize and a host of international cello prizes. Matias Vestergård is among the most original composers of our time. And Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 is simply among the most magnificent symphonies ever. At the head of the whole glory is chief conductor Christoph Gedschold.

The great violinist Fritz Kreisler rated Edward Elgar alongside Beethoven and Brahms. When Kreisler said as much in a 1905 newspaper interview, Elgar picked up the threads of a concerto he’d begun nearly two decades earlier. The piece he finished five years later, performed in this concert by the exceptional Nicola Benedetti, is as epic and emotive as it is personal and elusive, ‘enshrining the soul’ of an unknown person. A more famous enigma is found in Elgar’s dazzlingly virtuosic set of variations for orchestra. His Enigma Variations are portraits of friends and celebrations of orchestral panache. But they also offer glimpses into the soul of an artist who might have been careful not to reveal his secrets but was never afraid to show his emotions.

The final concert in our America 250 series begins with music of Joseph Schwantner. One of the leading American composers writing today, his Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra was commissioned for the 150th season of the New York Philharmonic and has become one of the most performed works of the past several decades. “The passionate pilgrimage of the soul” is how Sir Edward Elgar referred to his Symphony No. 2, the monumental work which concludes this evening.

Dr. Paul Thornock is Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, Georgia, where he conducts the semi-professional Cathedral Choir, the fully professional Choral Scholars, and acts as Artistic Director for the Friends of Cathedral Music concert series.

Before coming to Savannah, Dr. Thornock was the director of music at St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus, Ohio and St. James Cathedral in Seattle. He has also taught at the University of Puget Sound, Capital University, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary.  He holds degrees from the University of Puget Sound (BM), the University of Notre Dame (MM), and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (DMA).

Imogen worked with Benjamin Britten to establish the longstanding Aldeburgh Festival in Suffolk alongside her distinguished composing career. Tonight’s highlights are the folk and baroque–inspired Variations on Loth to Depart and the spectacular but rarely heard Festival Anthem, performed with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir.

From Gustav we have his St Paul’s Suite. Like Imogen’s Variations on Loth to Depart it’s based on English folk music, but it’s much more boisterous and dense – like the musical equivalent of eating a chocolate cake.

Music history is filled with moments that leave an indelible impression. Elgar’s Cello Concerto opens with the melancholic embrace of the cello, followed by the orchestra’s emotional response, conveying beauty, simplicity, and deep sadness. Written after World War I, it reflects Elgar’s disbelief in humanity and the sorrow following immense suffering. Similarly, Shostakovich, under the heavy hand of Stalin’s regime, spent years balancing his personal expression with political restrictions. Yet, this programme is not all sorrow. Shostakovich’s playful finale and Elgar’s glimmers of hope are complemented by Rimsky- Korsakov’s vibrant Capriccio espagnol. After the storm, the sun shines again. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Finnish maestro Santtu-Matias Rouvali, with Senja Rummukainen, a gifted cellist from Finland, performing Elgar’s masterpiece.

Mozart’s genius is on full display in his elegant and high-spirited Piano Concerto No. 9, and in the hands of Jan Lisiecki—recognized as one of today’s most astounding young talents—it promises pure magic. In his famous Enigma Variations, Elgar lovingly renders those nearest and dearest to him, creating a musical photo album filled with heartfelt warmth and profound emotional depth. The concerts open with romantic music from the 1939 film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Commissioned in 1945 by the Ministry of Education for a children’s film titled “Instruments of the Orchestra”, Britten’s cheery tour de force is the perfect excuse to show off the considerable talents of the BBC SSO’s individual players. You’ll also be stunned by the “consummate artistry” (The Guardian) of Alban Gerhardt as he performs Britten’s deeply expressive Cello Symphony, originally written for the great Russian virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich.

Edwar Elgar sat down at the piano after a tiring day of lessons and played a random melody that caught his wife’s attention. Without further ado, he began to improvise variations on this enchanting melody, inspired by the different characters of his friends and activities around him: a »gruff disposition«, a »stuttering girlfriend«, his first attempts at playing the piano, a dog tumbling down an embankment, or – not to be forgotten – the world-famous »Nimrod« variation, with which Elgar honours his best friend. The solution to the riddle, the enigma of the variations, which according to Elgar is hidden within the composition, remains unsolved to this day.

Stunning sisters and Seattle Symphony members, Jacqueline and Katherine Audas, join Cascade Symphony as soloists in Brahms’ magnificent Double Concerto for violin and cello. Ralph Vaughan Williams stepped onto the podium in Leeds on October 12, 1910, his 38th birthday, to conduct the premiere of “A Sea Symphony” with the Leeds Festival Chorus and Orchestra. Composing this piece was a journey of self-discovery for the then-young composer, culminating in this unique and epic choral symphony. This significant work by Vaughan Williams has never before been performed in Estonia.

Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto and Edward Elgar's "Enigma" Variations are each, in their own way, pinnacles of the Romantic era. Among the violin concertos of the era, Brahms's is the most musically substantial, profound, and rich. In terms of the mastery of its formal design and the nuanced orchestral texture, it is no less impressive than Brahms's symphonies, and the work can generally be considered a concertante counterpart to his symphonies. It is particularly closely related to the Symphony No. 2, Op. 73, with which it shares not only the key of D major but also the bright, idyllic mood. We welcome a younger soloist, the Italian-American violinist Francesca Dego, who recently released a recording of the Brahms concerto, which reviewers described as reflecting the Mediterranean sun.
