The highlight of the tour is the performance on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 7:30 PM at the prestigious Budapest Liszt Academy.

The OPRL, with its distinguished history as the sole professional symphonic ensemble in Francophone Belgium since 1960, will present a program that showcases the orchestra's versatility and rich sound. The repertoire includes the somber "Lugubre Gondole" by Liszt in an orchestration by John Adams, Elgar's deeply emotional Cello Concerto, and Franck's Symphony, a piece that serves as a calling card for the OPRL, highlighting their role as cultural ambassadors.

But he said he composed this Requiem “for pleasure.” This would be a Requiem to bring comfort to those who mourn, a series of heavenly tableaux rather than fire and brimstone, and one of his most beloved works. Tōru Takemitsu’s Requiem for String Orchestra expresses a more intense vein of grief. And finally, a riddle — Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations.

For the second concert we present an all-British program to honor the land of Mr. Zander's birth. First, Purcell's Chacony in G Minor as realized by Benjamin Britten, who was an early mentor to the conductor and a significant guide to his musical development. British cellist Alexander Baillie, a quintessential, complete musician, returns yet again to Boston! Baillie's enveloping warmth and hugeness of spirit are exactly the qualities the Elgar Cello Concerto requires. With this performance, he returns for his EIGHTH concerto appearance with the BPO (he has played Dvořák, Dutilleux, Lutoslawski, Elgar, Bridge, Haydn C Major and Shostakovich First). And he doesn't just play the Elgar: he IS the Elgar Concerto, as you will hear and see.

Composed at the end of the First World War, premiered in 1919, Elgar's Cello Concerto carries within it the horror and anger of the conflict, its sadness and its fragility, in noble and heartbreaking music written during the last months of the conflict. The composer makes his rebellious cry heard through the low notes and the expressive power of the cello, without realizing that he is giving life to one of the most beautiful concertos ever written for this instrument. When an inaccessible Irish actress becomes the object of all a composer's fantasies, it inspires the most extravagant symphony in the history of music! With his Fantastique (1830), Berlioz launched himself into the arena of Romanticism: his passion for Harriet Smithson turned into psychedelic delirium, that of a young artist under the influence of opium. After their triumph at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the OPRL and Gergely Madaras return to this musical, cinematic narration before its time, which presents us in turn with a scene at the ball, a reverie in the fields, a march to torture or an orgy funeral to the sound of Dies irae .

Prize-winning cellist Anthony Ross will leave his home as principal cellist of the Minnesota Orchestra to perform his compelling interpretation of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto on the stage of Whiting Auditorium. A favorite among cellists, the piece rose to wide acclaim nearly 40 years after it premiered, when celebrity cellist Jacqueline du Pré released a recording in the 1960s. FSO will bookend the concerto with iconic pieces by Johann Strauss, Jr. and Richard Strauss. Strauss Jr.’s The Blue Danube is so well loved, in fact, that Austria adopted it as a second national anthem. The work by Richard Strauss has also been adopted as an anthem of sorts by sci-fi fanatics everywhere.

This clutch of British compositions juxtaposes instrumental music by the young Vaughan Williams from 1912 with Elgar’s final chamber piece of 1919. Between them we hear George Butterworth’s atmospheric cycle for voice and string quartet, and folksongs arranged by Roderick Williams for the same forces.

Despite some disappointing early performances, Tchaikovsky grew to value his First Concerto above all his other piano compositions. The work that finally made Elgar famous was a happy accident. While improvising at the piano he came up with the tune he would later call “Enigma.” Inspired, he generated a slew of variations depicting his friends, all attempts to write in their voices.

The centrepiece of the concert is Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder, the composer’s ‘dream of ascending and descending a ladder between heaven and earth’ that was deemed ‘energetic, meditative, light, graceful and refreshing’ when premiered in New York last spring.

Prom 33: Titans of British Music

From Westminster Bridge and the bells of Big Ben to Bloomsbury Square, in his A London Symphony Vaughan Williams depicts the English capital, where horses still trotted through the streets and the countryside could be glimpsed from Marble Arch. Elgar’s ‘stout and steaky’ picture-postcard scenes of London life join anniversary composer Holst’s Hammersmith, commissioned for the BBC Military Band, in saluting the city. Vaughan Williams’s teacher Stanford (who died 100 years ago) completes the programme, with a selection of reflective songs performed by leading British baritone Christopher Maltman.

We return to Mikkeli Music Festival for four fantastic concerts featuring many highlights of the orchestral repertoire, plus an afternoon chamber music recital.

Santtu opens our 2024 residency with Schumann’s last symphony: the ‘Rhenish’. Inspired by a trip to Cologne, hear music evocative of the peacefully flowing Rhine, the church bells of Cologne Cathedral, leading to a high-spirited finale. Deeply in love and enlightened by Sanskrit literature, Gustav Holst embarked upon what many consider his true masterpiece. The Cloud Messenger recounts an ancient tale in which a man sends a message of love to his distant wife via a passing cloud. It drew from the composer a rich and passionate work charting love’s trials and rewards. This performance, marking 150 years since Holst’s birth, comes after Elgar’s ever-popular, bittersweet Cello Concerto and the gentle exhalations of Jonathan Harvey’s Tranquil Abiding, inspired by Buddhist meditation.

The evening will commence with the UK premiere of Cameron Biles-Liddell’s "Yr Afon Yn Yr Awyr" (The River in the Sky), a playful and evocative piece inspired by the River Dee's journey through the Welsh landscape. Following this, the audience will be treated to Judith Weir’s "O Sweet Spontaneous Earth," a setting of three poems that contemplate our relationship with our planet. The first half will conclude with Edward Elgar’s beloved "Serenade for Strings," a piece cherished by the composer himself.

Ryan Wigglesworth’s feast of English music opens with Britten’s suite of ‘best bits’ from his 1953 Coronation opera Gloriana, all about the fraught relationship between Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex. Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s new climate change-themed Cello Concerto – premiered last year in Glasgow by tonight’s forces – takes inspiration from three disparate aspects of the natural world. Elgar’s Symphony No. 2 is considered by many to be the best ever written in England. ‘I have put my soul into it,’ said the composer of this captivating journey, whose thrusting outward energy conceals deep inner poignancy.
