When the winter darkness is at its thickest,Norrland Operaopen the gates for this year's Classic Christmas with the Norrlandsoperans Symphony Orchestra, two magical evenings – December 12 and 13 – packed with ear candy for those who want to get in the Christmas spirit just in time for Epiphany. Everything from English choral gems, classical solo singing by Mozart and Sibelius to beloved Swedish Christmas music is on offer.

Experience Mozart’s majestic final work, the Requiem, a masterpiece of both solace and intensity reflective of the timeless themes of life, death and redemption. On the first half, the program opens with a spiritual work by Florence Price featuring principal clarinetist Chris Johnson. Young virtuoso Lun Li will then bring Joseph Bologne’s remarkable and “Mozartean” Ninth Violin Concerto to life. A true renaissance man of the 18th century, Bologne was an extraordinary black composer neglected for centuries who is finally getting rightful recognition as one of the most accomplished musicians of his time.

NOCCO’s February concerts begin with Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, a whimsical and enchanting piece that will transport you into the magical world of Shakespeare’s play with its sparkling melodies and vibrant orchestration. Following this piece will be an undoubtedly riveting and virtuosic performance by the winner of NOCCO’s 2024 Concerto Competition, Maia Nemes, performing Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G major. Finally, the concert concludes with Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 35, a compelling work that exemplifies her prowess as a 19th-century composer. Farrenc’s Symphony No. 2 is noted for its structural clarity, melodic inventiveness, and the seamless integration of classical form with Romantic expressiveness, showcasing her unique voice in the symphonic tradition.
