Two glorious masterworks from the late-Romantic era.....but one, a world premiere! Wisconsin-born American composer Daron Hagen's extraordinary new orchestration of Johannes Brahms' early Piano Quintet, which then became a Sonata for Two Pianos, fulfills Clara Schumann's unfulfilled desire that her friend turn his quintet into a Symphony; the "Symphony No.0", here in its first performance, fulfills the last of the LSO's 125th Anniversary commissions. Another new friend of the La Crosse Symphony, violin virtuoso Yevgeny Kutik -- still well-remembered for his incredible performance of the Korngold Violin Concerto -- returns for what will be an equally amazing rendition of the Concerto of Jean Sibelius, Finland's greatest son.

The evening features Tchaikovsky’s lush "Romeo and Juliet" Overture-Fantasy and selections from Prokofiev’s dramatic "Romeo and Juliet" ballet, both beautifully evoking the romance and struggle in the classic tale. Reimagining the story in 20th-century New York City, Bernstein’s "West Side Story" Overture inspires with lively jazz rhythms and harmonies.

“A musical portrait of Stalin,” has described Shostakovich’s primarily oppressive and sinister Tenth Symphony, his first in five years after a Soviet denouncement of his music. Composer Daron Hagen touts the performance of electric guitarist D.J. Sparr on his Electric Guitar Concerto as a “joyous, celebratory romp.” Desert Transport portrays experiencing the sound sensations of a helicopter in flight.

What could be more American than Gershwin’s An American in Paris, a jazz-inspired tour of the French capital through the eyes of an American tourist? How about William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony, an overlooked American gem infused with the blues, spirituals and the sounds of the jazz age all blended together in a traditional classical form.  Add in the swing, funk and bebop styles reflected in Daron Hagen’s Concerto for Flugelhorn, and you have the perfect soundscape for our “Americana” concert.
