An Evening with Alexander Hersh

Join us for an unforgettable evening of classical music at Caramoor on July 8, 2023, in Katonah, NY, featuring the exceptional talents of cellist Alexander Hersh and pianist Christopher Goodpasture. This intimate Music Room recital, starting at 5:00pm, showcases a journey through five distinct sound worlds, with the cello leading the exploration of both familiar and fantastical sonic possibilities.

Alexander Hersh, an Evnin Rising Star alumnus, has rapidly established himself as a leading figure in the classical music scene, having performed with renowned orchestras and received top prizes at competitions worldwide. His passion for chamber music has taken him to prestigious festivals across the globe. Christopher Goodpasture, known for his captivating performances as a recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral soloist, joins Hersh in this performance, bringing his own accolades and a growing reputation.

The program for the evening includes Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Paul Wianko's Microsuite for Solo Cello, Anton Webern's 2 Pieces for Cello and Piano, Felix Mendelssohn's Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58, and Giovanni Sollima's Lamentatio for Solo Cello. This selection promises an exploration of the cello's expressive range and the duo's musical synergy.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring an intimate atmosphere for all attendees. Following the performance, guests are invited to meet the artists and enjoy a refreshing beverage, making for a perfect summer evening of music and camaraderie.

This event is part of a new series of Saturday late-afternoon hour-long classical recitals at Caramoor, designed especially for chamber music enthusiasts and featuring alumni of Caramoor’s mentoring programs. Stravinsky’s witty, neoclassical masterpiece Jeu de Cartes (The Card Game) was inspired by his favorite game—Poker! It is hilariously filled with quotations from Beethoven, Johann Strauss, Ravel, Delibes, Tchaikovsky, and even Rossini’s Barber of Seville! It is an orchestral tour de force that requires the virtuosity of your orchestra to bring off. Speaking of Virtuosity, we are excited to present a family act for you. The Hersh family is Bay Area musical royalty, with cellist Alex recently winning the 2022 Pro Musicis Award, while his father Stefan is one of the nation’s most revered violinists. In this season of commemoration, it is entirely fitting that we welcome back Stefan, since he served as the Vallejo Symphony’s concertmaster back in the day!
