Violinist

Artistic Director Daria Adams curates a one-hour program of four pieces by living composers, whose works look back in some way, then weaves them together with their historical counterparts. This leads to some fascinating juxtapositions, such as a song by Hildegard von Bingen from 1100 A.D with a work for strings and harpsichord by Michi Wiancko from 2021. Daria has paired Elizabethan ­era songs by John Dowland, Italian madrigals by Gesualdo, and a Bourree by J.S. Bach with modern counterparts by Wiancko and Caroline Shaw.

Principal Bass Zachary Cohen plays an arrangement of Franz Schubert’s famous work for arpeggione, a now extinct instrument similar to a bowed guitar, alongside Florence Price’s technically and lyrically epic String Quartet No 2. Originally published in 1935, the quartet was rediscovered in 2009 with hundreds of manuscripts written by Price over her lifetime — audiences are in for a treat as the SPCO tackles the entire work after having previously performed the “Juba” movement for streaming audiences early in the pandemic.

SPCO concertmaster Steven Copes takes audiences on a deep dive into masterworks by four early 20th century composers, each distilling late-Romantic musical traditions into something fresh and modern. Arnold Schoenberg’s dramatic Chamber Symphony No. 1 for fifteen musicians condenses the symphonic language of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler into a colorful, action-packed thrill-ride. Maurice Ravel’s celebrated String Quartet in F Major and Richard Strauss’s Capriccio for string sextet, though no less modern, are lush and sentimental in contrast to Edgard Varèse’s Density 21.5 for solo flute played by SPCO flutist Alicia McQuerrey.

SPCO flutist Julia Bogorad-Kogan curates a program of Baroque chamber music including works by Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre, the first woman to compose opera in France, and Isabella Leonarda whose musical talent was compared to the military prowess of Emperor Leopold I. Discover their “marvelous” chamber music, which was largely unknown for centuries, alongside gems by more recognized Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann

2023.24 Sandbox Composer-in-Residence Clarice Assad's Synchronous is a two-movement work composed for oboe and string quartet depicting the same five minutes of time, first as a beautiful sunrise, and second as disconnected images of events happening around the world during those same five minutes.
