Spanish rhythms, Slavic dances: hardly any other art form can take you across the globe as quickly and convincingly as the characteristic music of different peoples. Transformed and incorporated, as a type or echo, as a quotation or starting point for something new, folk music has been an indispensable source of inspiration for even the greatest composers throughout all eras. This magnificent program, featuring a highly prominent ensemble, makes this clear. Sir Antonio Pappano was Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, for many years and is now Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. With the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the young but already internationally acclaimed Spanish violinist María Dueñas, he first draws on the enthusiasm for Spain of Édouard Lalo, who wrote a thrilling four-movement violin concerto entitled "Symphonie espagnole" for the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. Afterwards, furiant, polka and other dances reign in the fantastic sequence of the “Slovanské tance” by Antonín Dvořák, created after the model of Brahms' “Hungarian Dances”: It gets your feet moving!

The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra presents its Family Concert—Sweet Suites and Musical Treats—at Central Bucks High School East, as narrator Valerie Eastburn entertains the audience with captivating stories and fun facts while the BCSO plays nuggets from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and other enthralling pieces.

South Korean violinist Clara-Jumi Kang performs Lalo’s passionate violin concerto Symphonie Espagnole. Ryan Bancroft also conducts the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Anders Hillborg’s Beast Sampler, where the orchestra forms a strong, vivid organism. Finally we hear the epic symphony No 1 by Mahler, the Titan.

South Korean violinist Clara-Jumi Kang was a star already as a child, and has visited Sweden on several occasions. At this guest performance she presents the beautiful violin concerto Symphonie Espagnole. French Édouard Lalo composed the concerto around the same time that Bizet’s opera Carmen premiered in Paris, with the same passionate Spanish sound. Audiences received both with great enthusiasm. Later, Tchaikovsky found inspiration from Lalo to compose his own masterful violin concerto.
