At this concert we are delighted to be supporting local children’s charity Honeypot. Since 1996 Honeypot has been working to enhance the lives of young carers aged 5-12 years by providing respite breaks and a holistic range of services. In the UK nationwide, they give young carers a break from demanding and stressful responsibilities at home and provide a safe, nurturing environment where children at risk can develop their full potential.

The Company honors the centenary of Maria Tallchief’s birth with three Balanchine works created on the great ballerina. Tallchief danced in the 1952 premiere of Scotch Symphony, a romantic ballet in which Balanchine paid homage to the dramatic landscape and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands. A pas de deux inspired by the full-length Sylvia returns to the repertory after 30 years, and features intricate classical steps that highlighted her spectacular technique. And Tallchief was also renowned for her performance in the title role of Firebird, an allegorical fantasy set to Stravinsky’s brilliant score.

Coppélia (sometimes referred to as The Girl with the Enamel Eyes) is a sentimental comic love story which will delight the whole family with its humor and charm.
Set in a small European village, this beloved ballet tells the story of an eccentric inventor, Doctor Coppélius. Franz, a young villager, becomes infatuated with the mysterious girl sitting on the balcony of Doctor Coppélius’s house. Franz doesn’t know that the mysterious girl is a doll whom the toymaker is trying to bring to life. Swanhilda, who is engaged to Franz, decides to sneak into Dr. Coppélius’s house with her friends where she discovers the mysterious girl is a doll. She decides to show Franz his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. Love triumphs over all and the story ends with joyful celebration of the lovers’ wedding.

This spring, we are excited to bring back, Coppélia, a wonderfully comedic ballet that became part of Los Gatos Ballet’s repertoire in 2009. This playful story brings us to a small town where villagers are happily preparing for their annual Harvest Festival. The village’s eccentric alchemist, Dr. Coppelius, has designed a mechanical doll who appears to be so lifelike that she fools everyone into believing she is alive. Confusion and hilarity abound as the town’s new young fiancés, Swanilda and Franz, continue to follow their own curiosities about this beautiful “girl”. A comic ballet based on three acts. Full of theatrics and great displays of technique, the story of Swanilda, Franz and the mysterious Doctor Coppelius, who is also the inventor and secretly creates life-size dolls that dance. Dr. Coppélius is one of those that amuses and excites the public. Swanilda is curious and together with her friends she checks out Dr. Coppelius's house, discovering the dancing dolls and decides to take his place. For doctor Coppelius it is magic, a miracle to be able to see her dolls come to life and is very disappointed when Swanilda decides to confess the truth. Franz rescues her and they end up getting married and very happy.

Dances set to music from 19th-century France comprise this program. Balanchine’s La Source, set to the music of Léo Delibes, has been hailed as the choreographer’s tribute to the charm and sophistication of French dancing. Originally composed as a pas de deux, it was later expanded with the addition of an ensemble. Alexei Ratmansky turned to the lesser-known Édouard Lalo for inspiration for his Namouna, A Grand Divertissement, a ballet that likewise draws on classical French steps and style as it depicts a romantic tale of thwarted love eventually rewarded, combining pure dance, hints of drama, and lively moments of wit.
