Welcome back the amazing Jennifer Koh in Missy Mazzoli’s Violin Concerto, a work composed for her after a decade of previous collaborations. Koh premiered the work in 2022 in a performance conducted by Aspen Conducting Academy alumna Gemma New. Subtitled “Procession," the work is inspired by medieval rituals developed during the Plague. The Washington Post described it as “an unsettling work that opens like a trapdoor, or the moment you fall asleep… Like Vaughan Williams, Mazzoli taps into and transforms a hymnal history—albeit with a more “messed-up” (her words) twist. Mazzoli conjures penitential processions, “melting hymns,” spells cast over broken bones and a conclusory ascent to the heavens.”

In 2014, clarinetist Anthony McGill and his brother, flutist Demarre McGill, were featured artists in residence at Bowling Green University. When pianist Michael McHale joined them in concert for the first time, it was immediately clear that the trio would have a great future making music together. This recital includes two of the three wind sonatas that Poulenc composed at the end of his life. Both the flute and clarinet sonatas are full of the composer’s characteristic charm, elegance, and buffoonery. The program also includes a fascinating potpourri of short works for this unusual trio of instruments.

Grammy Award winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (New York Times) performances, the “rare power” (Washington Post) of their recordings, and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity” (Minnesota Star-Tribune). Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska makes her Minnesota Orchestra debut in an all-American program featuring the Orchestra’s own Concertmaster Erin Keefe. Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute alumna Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) opens the concert with enchanting music that churns and roils. Then, Keefe leads the way through a witty dinner table conversation set to music in Bernstein’s Serenade, after Plato’s “Symposium.” Finally, the Orchestra brings William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony—a remarkable work of art and story of true perseverance, inspired by African American spirituals—to the Orchestra Hall stage for the first time.

Following its wildly creative video presentation as part of the Spring 2021 Cal Performances at Home season, the adventurous new-music ensemble yMusic—all members of Generation Y—returns with an exciting program of new and recent works for its in-person Berkeley debut.

Comprising “six contemporary classical polymaths who playfully overstep the boundaries of musical genres” (The New Yorker), yMusic is committed to working closely with living composers, from pop stars like Paul Simon, Regina Spektor, and Ben Folds to leading lights of the classical music world.

The centerpiece of the concert is the West Coast premiere of Difference, a Cal Performances co-commission by the Grammy-nominated and Grawemeyer Award-winning composer Andrew Norman, hailed as “the leading American composer of his generation” by the Los Angeles Times. The program also includes Missy Mazzoli’s meditative Ecstatic Science; Berkeley-born composer Gabriella Smith’s Tessellations; Together, a new work Judd Greenstein wrote for the group during quarantine; and several new pieces co-composed by the ensemble during the past year’s hiatus from live performance.

Bach with newer works that celebrate the return of spring.

The adventurous Pekka Kuusisto, who successfully premiered Daníel Bjarnason’s Violin Concerto at the Hollywood Bowl 2019, returns as the protagonist for the recent piece by the prolific Nico Muhly, conducted by the one-and-only Esa-Pekka Salonen. Kuusisto also collaborates on this program with composer and sound artist Ellen Reid (p r i s m), who will share some of her own extraordinary music.

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a program made up entirely of world premieres written by composers during the pandemic and dedicated specifically to Cooke. Together with pianist Kirill Kuzmin, Cooke shines a light on the hopes, fears, and observations of living through an unprecedented time, featuring the brightest compositional talents in music today.

Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill is the soloist in Anthony Davis’s autobiographical depiction of an unequal encounter with the police. Dalia Stasevska — the rising star who conducted the 2018 Nobel Prize Ceremony — leads the program.

The program includes a world premiere by Noah Jenkins, an LA Phil commission that promises to explore a range of sonic landscapes, from drones to audio phenomena. Missy Mazzoli's bass concerto, "Dark with Excessive Bright," borrows its title from Milton’s "Paradise Lost" and offers a journey through centuries with a blend of new ideas and influences. The evening will also feature Donnacha Dennehy’s piano concerto "Limina," a work that pushes the boundaries of the instrument.

Performers for the night include the LA Phil New Music Group, with John Adams conducting, Eliza McCarthy on piano, and Christopher Hanulik on bass.

This performance is not just a concert but an exploration of the rich musical relationship between John Adams and the LA Phil, showcasing the creativity and innovation that defines the Green Umbrella series.
