On the centenary of Miles Davis’s birth, Fresu reflects, tells, and evokes one of the key figures of twentieth-century music. Not only jazz.

Miles Davis would have been 100 years old on 26 May 2026. The hr-Bigband is taking this milestone birthday as an opportunity to pay a very special tribute to the jazz legend, who himself performed at the Alte Oper in 1990. The ensemble will pay tribute to the collaborative work of Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans by performing the complete works of 'Miles Ahead', 'Porgy and Bess' and 'Sketches of Spain', written between 1957 and 1960, in one evening with three exquisite soloists. The three albums are regarded as epochal and groundbreaking works that would forever shape the musical landscape of orchestral jazz. Miles Ahead" marked the beginning of the successful collaboration between the two musicians and laid the foundation for their later status as musical legends. But the two albums that followed also explored the possibilities of jazz in large formations and made jazz history.

If one were to imagine an Italian musician celebrating a musical giant like Miles Davis, in the year marking the centenary of his birth, the first name that would surely come to mind is Paolo Fresu . His new recording project, "Kind of Lives," is the concert version of the successful musical and theatrical opera "Kind of Miles," written and performed by Fresu himself, which has been performed over 50 times. A sonic fresco that evokes the creative and visionary universe of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, retracing his music through original compositions.

In December 2012, I was asked to perform a concert for the city of Sassari during the Christmas season. The original idea was to supplement the usual repertoire with some Christmas-related pieces, but the idea of ​​performing an entire concert on this theme immediately gained traction.
For some years, in fact, my groups and I had enjoyed playing Christmas songs during the Advent season.
