Shunning 20th century modernism, their late romantic style of heart-on-the-sleeve music, while questioned by critics and musicologists at the time, has endured with audiences to this day. We throw open the doors to the holiday season with a journey to the Land of Sweets in Act II of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. This culminates with a performance of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, arguably one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. Mozart the revolutionary? With works such as the Piano Quartet in G minor, the composer was indeed exploring unknown territory: not only was the instrumentation new, but also the uncompromising, even grim tone that dominates the opening movement. The 2nd String Quartet, which Alexander Borodin dedicated to his wife, is completely different: it looks back on 20 years of happy partnership. Carl Maria von Weber, on the other hand, lets the five instruments act like figures on an opera stage in his B major quintet, with the clarinet as the undisputed prima donna.

Young Artist in Residence Johan Dalene, meanwhile, is crazy about the raw energy of Nielsen’s powerful Violin Concerto. We open with Ruth Gipps’ gorgeous instrumental Song for Orchestra with the oboe leading the way.

This special event will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Hatfield Hall, located within the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 5500 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, IN, 47803.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. David Bowden, the THSO Strings and Principal Harp, Melanie Mashner, will deliver a performance filled with lush string sounds and the warm beauty of harp vibrations. The concert will feature the return of Elina Rubio, our recent concertmaster, who will dazzle the audience with a solo performance of Ravel’s Tzigane Gypsy Dance. Additionally, Elina will join forces with our current concertmaster, Erina Buchholz, for a memorable rendition of the second movement of Bach’s Double Concerto.

The program also includes a variety of pieces that promise to captivate and delight, from waltzes and a Strauss polka played pizzicato to a mesmerizing new work by Caroline Shaw, Entr’acte for Strings, and the stunning Fratres by Arvo Pärt. The concert will conclude with a selection of pieces including a jig by Grainger, a Hoe-Down by Copland, and a beautiful harp concert aria featuring Melanie Mashner.

This 75 to 80-minute performance will be held without intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the music. Following the concert, a VIP reception will offer the chance to meet and mingle with the musicians.

The Boise Phil Youth Orchestras provide outstanding musical training and experiences to over 175 talented young musicians throughout the Treasure Valley. All three orchestras (Symphonic, Concert, and Strings) are under the direction of Music Director Jennifer Drake. Our young musicians attend weekly rehearsals, receive professional coaching from Boise Phil orchestra musicians, and perform throughout the year in our community. “There is music wherever there is rhythm, as there is life wherever there beats a pulse,” wrote Stravinsky in one of his sketchbooks for The Rite of Spring. This quote sums up the program for this weekend. From the World Premiere by Katherine Balch, who captures the magic of everyday sounds to the dazzling orchestration and rhythmic creativity on display in Polovtsian Dances, to Stravinsky’s groundbreaking Rite of Spring, arguably one of the most influential pieces of music of the 20th century, rhythm, pulse, experimentation and excitement play a critical role in all three pieces.

Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances showcases the composer’s interest in opera and folk stories. A chemist by occupation, Borodin viewed composition as a pastime, distracting him from his principal profession and this work was no exception. Based on the 12th century poem, “The Epic of Igor’s Army,” Polovtsian Dances tells the story of a heroic 12th-century Russian prince as he defends against invading nomadic tribes. Join us for an enchanting afternoon at the "Free Family Concert: Dancing Around the World," presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. This unique event took place on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 3:00 PM, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center, located at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The concert, which lasted approximately one hour without an intermission, was a vibrant celebration of global cultures through music and dance. Under the baton of Music Director Régulo Stabilito, the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, along with the Oak Ridge International Folk Dancers, took the audience on a musical journey across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Adding to the excitement, students from the Oak Ridge High School Orchestra and Band performed side-by-side with the professionals for a grand finale that captivated all in attendance.

But the fun didn't stop with the final note. After the concert, attendees were invited to the Instrument Discovery Zone, where they had the opportunity to try out various instruments, interact with teachers and performers, and even learn a few folk dance steps. This hands-on experience provided a wonderful way for the whole family to engage with the music and cultures presented during the concert.

Based in Germany, the award-winning Esmé Quartet was formed by four Korean musicians who had been friends since childhood and has since gained a worldwide reputation as a chamber ensemble of exceptional artistry and achievement. Praised for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, the quartet brings together the performers’ brilliant and distinct musical personalities to form a cohesive, close-knit group that is passionately dedicated to the string quartet repertoire.

Philharmonia presents works from the musically rich Muqam tradition of Central Asia, featuring a North American premier of a work by Uyghur composer Nusrat Wajiding entitled Homeland. The theme of “homeland” carries into the second half, with three further musical portrayals of the intersecting relationships between location, music, and identity.

Members of Seraph Brass have performed with such esteemed ensembles as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Musicians from Marlboro, Luzern Music Festival in Switzerland, National Symphony, Brass Band of Battle Creek, Daejeon Philharmonic and Auckland Philharmonia. They currently hold positions in the Richmond Symphony, World and European Brass Association, Louisville Orchestra, Artosphere Orchestra, University of North Texas, University of Richmond, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Shenandoah Conservatory.

Swiss-born conductor Philippe Jordan, music director of the Vienna State Opera, makes his BSO debut in this all-Russian program alongside a BSO audience favorite, Israeli-American pianist Yefim Bronfman. Bronfman is soloist in one of the most beloved and challenging concertos in the repertoire, Rachmaninoff’s sparkling and lush Piano Concerto No. 3. Opening and closing the program is colorful music from the stage. The brilliantly orchestrated overture to Borodin’s incomplete opera Prince Igor (1887) evokes the dramatic sweep of the Russian legend and history that are the opera’s foundation. One of Prokofiev’s most recognizable and popular scores, the Shakespearean ballet Romeo and Juliet features character pieces from the delightful to the threatening, here distilled into an orchestral suite.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is often considered the most difficult concerto in the standard repertory but also one of his most loved for its Romantic lyricism. Acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman joins the Music Director of the Vienna State Opera, Philippe Jordan, for this richly melodic concert that concludes with a substantial suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s colorful ballet music inspired by Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy.

Five monumental Russian composers raise their voices in this concert. Tchaikovsky’s soaring and soulful melodies live on through this tribute from his disciple Anton Arensky. We feature Principal Cellist Moisés Molina in Rachmaninoff’s endless melody, the <i>Vocalise</i>. And writing in the year of the Russian Revolution, “bad boy” Prokofiev serves up a cheeky take on music’s classical roots.

The momentum of our Spotlight on Santa Barbara 2020/21 Season continues! Maestro Nir Kabaretti leads the Santa Barbara Symphony and soloists through a program highlighting Santa Barbara’s musical talents. This program will be a tribute to our area medical professionals. Performances include  “State Street” from Bramwell Tovey’s “Santa Barbara Sonata”, Beethoven’s Romance in F Major with Concertmaster Jessica Guideri, the beautiful “Elvira Madigan” movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 21 with local doctor Toni Meyers as soloist, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 29.
