Rossini’s bright and sunny overture preludes one of the most famous and popular of all concertos, suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of southern Spain; its achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps the most sublime pieces of music ever written. The Spanish passion continues with Chabrier’s dazzling rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant and colourful suite. In contrast, Borodin’s tone poem evokes the sweeping plains of central Asia, whilst nightmarish visions abound in Mussorgsky’s dark and brooding depiction of a Witches Sabbath.

. He is an internationally celebrated grand seigneur of the conductor's baton, a universally respected veteran conductor: Thomas Sanderling, born in 1942 in Novosibirsk. In 2017, he became head of the city's symphony orchestra, but resigned in 2022 in protest against Putin's invasion of Ukraine. In our Russian program, he conducts the overture to Borodin's national opera Prince Igor , the rarely heard Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 – with the Chinese-Canadian star pianist Sheng Cai as soloist – and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, with whom Sanderling was friends. The work is a bold, even cheeky surprise package. After the victorious end of the Great Patriotic War in 1945, the officials in the USSR, especially Stalin, were expecting a monumental socialist "Super-Ninth"—with soloists, choir, and large orchestra modeled on Beethoven's "Ninth." But instead, Shostakovich composed a witty, sparkling neoclassical symphony, imbued with the spirit of Haydn and simply declaring: "Hurrah, the war is over!"

Tiffany Townsend has been praised for her “powerhouse soprano and expressive presence” (The Wall Street Journal) and “rich voice and interpretive talent” (Bachtrack). She was designated as a Resident Artist at Seattle Opera for the 2024-2025 season. She made her role debut as America Robinson in Jubilee and covered Tosca and Nedda in Pagliacci at Seattle Opera during that season. Ms. Townsend is the recipient of the prestigious 2021 Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation. She has performed with LA Opera, Wolf Trap Opera & Opera Philadelphia. She also has been in concert with the New Jersey Symphony, the Bakersfield Symphony, Artosphere Festival, the Missouri Symphony, Tacoma Symphony and The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Tiffany Townsend holds a Professional Studies Certificate in Opera from Curtis Institute of Music, a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Millsaps College.

This concert features American composer Aaron Copland with his dramatic musical story of legendary outlaw Billy the Kid.  Copland’s brilliant score takes us through scenes of wagons, a frontier town, a nighttime card game, and even a gun battle from the American West.  The concert opens with American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances, a work depicting rhythms and dances of regions in South America.

Carmina Burana is a musical feast for the senses. Around 1920, the composer Emánuel Moór had the vision of building the piano of the future. His duplex piano with two manuals was born out of the spirit of the late Romantic period and offers even more tonal colours and a greater richness of sound. On an ordinary piano, one touch of the keys causes a hammer to strike the string. With the duplex piano, two hammers can be coupled: one keystroke then produces two tones simultaneously. This doubling of the tones leads to an unimagined fullness of sound in the forte, and to a magical brilliance of sound in the piano. The two manuals allow for differentiated layers of sound. Emanuel Moór also developed new string instruments. His Moór violin and Moór viola will be presented at the concert.

Britten’s seascapes, Borodin’s oriental fantasies and Victoria Borisova-Ollas’ tribute to the imagination of Salman Rushdie will make a vivid setting for the playfulness and wit of Prokofiev’s brilliant Third Piano Concerto – played by young pianist Daniel Ciobanu for whom every performance is a new adventure.

The organ is known as the king of instruments for a reason. Its sound is sublime, sometimes even out of this world. All the stops will be pulled out – literally! – when the Kulturpalast’s own organist Olivier Latry joins his wife Shin-Young Lee at the keyboard. The duo will coax unforgettable sounds from the organ at the main auditorium of the Kulturpalast, which boasts 4,109 pipes and a sound to rival its visual impressiveness. The program awaiting the audience is highly intriguing, as it features works not originally written for organ, but of such polyphony and orchestral colorfulness that they unfold an effect all their own on this grand instrument. They include »Le Sacre du printemps« by Igor Stravinsky and the famous »Lever du jour« from Maurice Ravel’s »Daphnis et Chloé«.

A spectacular showpiece. A fantastic symphony. Experience the hallucinations of Hector Berlioz. Guest conductor Michael Repper leads the “Symphonie Fantastique”, Berlioz’s vivid masterpiece. The concert begins with the tympani thunderclap of Antropolis by Gabriela Ortiz. Her driving rhythms evoke the seduction of a smokey Mexico City café. And the Richmond Symphony Chorus is featured in Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” (the tune for “Stranger in Paradise”.)

Remarkable leaps and bounds for the chamber music playing that our orchestra members love: Borodin was actually a full-time chemist and physician, but his passion for music constantly rekindled, including from 1859 in Heidelberg – where he composed his romantic string sextet in D minor. Some time later, he returned to Russia and the work was lost. It did not turn up for almost 100 years until it was finally discovered in an antiquarian bookshop. And it may still be missing something, as it consists of just two movements – one of which seems to shimmer like Mendelssohn’s »Midsummer Night’s Dream« and the other is laced with folk songs from Borodin's homeland. Dvořák’s sextet, premiered in 1879, also bubbles along folkloristically, which has to do with its chronological proximity to his famous »Slavonic Dances« and emphasises his image as a »Bohemian musician«. Although this was only one aspect of his multifaceted personality, Dvořák loved the cheerful and colourful environment around him, where people liked to celebrate festivals. His work quickly became one of the classics of the genre – and also inspired Schönberg to write his string sextet »Verklärte Nacht« in 1899. It is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel, saying: »There is a glow around everything, you drift with me across a cold sea, but a warmth of your own flickers from you into me, from me into you.« Schönberg found a poetic voice here that reflected his aesthetic stance – and an impressive love story that defied the moral standards of the time. He created a late romantic musical world for this – and the composition is one of his most popular pieces of chamber music today.

The concert will showcase a collage of captivating music, nostalgic videos, and reflections on the orchestra's impactful history. Under the baton of special guests Stephen Osmond, Richard Sherman, Ralph Votapek, and Mitsuru Kubo, the program will span classics to contemporary pieces, highlighting the diversity and spirit of collaboration that defines the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

The program schedule includes masterpieces such as Johann Strauss, Jr.'s "Fledermaus: Overture," César Franck's "Symphonic Variations," Edward Elgar's "Nimrod from Enigma Variations," and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Finale: Allegro con fuoco from Symphony No.4," among others. The concert will have a runtime of approximately 2 hours.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a free, interactive lecture at 6:30 PM, offering insights into the evening's program and the opportunity to engage with the music on a deeper level.

Following the concert, the celebration continues with an afterparty sponsored by Rehmann. This event offers a great opportunity to mingle with musicians, guest artists, composers, and fellow symphony fans. The afterparty will feature entry, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks, all included in the $20 ticket price.

The spirit of music continues throughout the program, with a performance of American composer Augusta Read Thomas’s reflective Violin Concerto, No. 1, “Spirit Musings.” Soloist Hasse Borup is known for his championing of new music and exciting projects. We will close with Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, a tour de force for every section of the orchestra and one of Beethoven’s tightest compositions.

The CYS String Ensembles, under the direction of Kati Kyme, and the CYS Wind Ensembles, under the direction of  Wind Ensembles Director Anthony Lanzino, will feature music by Borodin, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Grieg, Mozart, Grainger, Holst, and Laughrey. CYS Percussion Director Artie Storch will also be featured as he conducts the Wind Ensemble Percussion section in a performance of The Hawks by Paul Brazauskas. Rachmaninoff and Khachaturian regarded themselves as descendants of Tchaikovsky. Shunning 20th century modernism, their late romantic style of heart-on-the-sleeve music, while questioned by critics and musicologists at the time, has endured with audiences to this day. Corinthian Orchestra returns to Sinfonia Smith Square with this not-to-be-missed programme of late romantic Russian music.

We throw open the doors to the holiday season with a journey to the Land of Sweets in Act II of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The beloved ballet classic comes to life with familiar favourites including “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Waltz of the Flowers”. Adding to the revelry, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra joins side by side for a thrilling performance of Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor.

The exuberant energy of Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture and the vibrant rhythms of Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances culminate with the soaring melodies of Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony in this high-octane program that will leave audiences reeling.

The score made famous by Disney’s Fantasia, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is festive and thrilling orchestral work that launches this program. Joining the LSU Symphony will be new Associate Professor of Oboe, Dr. Andrew Parker, in a rarely heard concerto gem by English composer, teacher and oboist, Ruth Gipps. The evening closes with a work rich in orchestral colors and sonorities, Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 in B minor.

This culminates with a performance of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, arguably one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. Bartók draws from a vast array of traditional musical inspirations, with orchestration that vividly captures diverse styles and colours. True to its title as a ‘concerto’ for orchestra rather than a ‘symphony,’ it offers a balanced distribution of melodies, presenting significant challenges for all.

Unquestionably, music has the power to inspire and bring forth the full range of human emotion, often taking us on a journey within the space and time of one piece or even a single phrase. The works on this program certainly provide some dramatic contrasts, but at their heart, there is always an oasis of lyrical calm and exquisite beauty; this is music where we can reflect in reverie, be composed and collected. The serenity of Brahms’ St. Anthony Variations is complimented by Strauss’ iconic Horn Concerto No. 1, and we are thrilled to welcome to the stage the LSO’s Principal Horn, the wonderful Anne-Marie Cherry as our guest artist for this work. Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 is a great example of that rich and fulfilling emotional journey – from the profound, powerful and declamatory drama of the first movement, we are led into the playful light of the second movement’s scherzo, then to that poignantly lyrical oasis of composure in the third movement, and finally to surely one of the most brilliant and energetic finales in the world of the symphony. How so much is contained in just a thirty-minute composition speaks to the unparalleled quality of music as an expression of human creativity.
