Appearing in different ways, dreams, visions, and fantasies all materialize as illusions of the mind. Sometimes delightful, and sometimes disturbing, these illusions provide insight into inner desires and provide composers license to flaunt musical conventions and compose with inventive forms and ideas. This concert will feature music full of mind-bending forms, dreamy sound worlds, and fantastic texts. Giles Farnaby’s “Dreame” perceives what the composer views in his sleep. Henry Purcell’s “Blessed Virgin’s Expostulations” demands the return of the angel Gabriel, first seen as a vision by Mary in her early years.

Immerse yourself in the Halloween season with the eerie and spooky sounds of the harpsichord.  Spine-chilling chords and cackling runs bring alive a concert of things that go bump in the night, with black cats, monsters, and even compositions written by spirits. Featuring works by J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Jean-Phillip Rameau, Francois Couperin, and many more, almost entirely deceased, composers.

The Macabre: A Harpsichord Halloween

Ualbany Performing Arts Center

Harpsichordist Faythe Vollrath presents a recital pairing music from the 16th through 18th centuries with music from living composers. Baroque composers featured include Girolamo Fescobaldi, William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, and Jean-Baptiste Forqueray. Contemporary composers on the program include Elinor Armer, James Dorsa, Peter Machajdik, and Nissim Schaul.
