Former Grant Park Music Festival Principal Conductor Leonard Slatkin returns to conduct Tchaikovsky’s fatalistic Symphony No. 5. Violinist Yevgeny Kutik makes his Festival debut in the Chicago premiere of Joseph Schwantner’s Violin Concerto.

Andrew Litton, Music Director of the New York City Ballet, conducts the must-hear Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that is brimming with technical precision and virtuosic themes captivatingly interpreted by Minsk-born Yevgeny Kutik. Beethoven’s stormy Coriolan Overture opens the concert and sets the mood of dramatic music-making. Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 anchors the evening with luxurious and inviting symphonic textures that completely satisfy a classical music lovers’ concert desires.

Two glorious masterworks from the late-Romantic era.....but one, a world premiere! Wisconsin-born American composer Daron Hagen's extraordinary new orchestration of Johannes Brahms' early Piano Quintet, which then became a Sonata for Two Pianos, fulfills Clara Schumann's unfulfilled desire that her friend turn his quintet into a Symphony; the "Symphony No.0", here in its first performance, fulfills the last of the LSO's 125th Anniversary commissions. Another new friend of the La Crosse Symphony, violin virtuoso Yevgeny Kutik -- still well-remembered for his incredible performance of the Korngold Violin Concerto -- returns for what will be an equally amazing rendition of the Concerto of Jean Sibelius, Finland's greatest son.

Pianopalooza is our week-long piano festival that will welcome and celebrate the debut of the Rogue Valley Symphony’s latest addition: a coveted Hamburg Steinway piano called The Raven. This will be a rare opportunity to hear star pianists and violinists putting the piano to the test with classical double concertos for violin and piano by classical contemporaries Mozart, Haydn, and Hummel, as well as major Romantic piano concertos by Rachmaninoff, Grieg, and Chopin. All composers were ALSO star pianists.

Maestro Rhodes gives us creative connections between concerts, the opening program presented Mozart and Bruckner–Beethoven is the link connecting those two. Beethoven took the conventions of their Classical era and bent them to his romantic, personal leanings.

Chamber music and the full symphony orchestra meet in this evening’s unique program. Ravel’s <em>Le tombeau de Couperin</em>, a perennial favorite, highlights the colors of a chamber orchestra while paying patriotic tribute to the French musical tradition. His Sonata for violin and cello is a strikingly different work, experimental and virtuosic in character. The imposing Triple Concerto, composed by Beethoven for his patron and student, the Archduke Rudolph, is a marvelous essay for piano trio and orchestra, among Beethoven’s favorites of his own work.
