When you think of serenades, you probably think of summer evenings, nature, conviviality, and cheerfulness. Mozart captured this relaxed mood in numerous works. But serenades can also focus on the dark side of life, on the hidden and unspoken. This is what Benjamin Britten had in mind when he set six poems, all of which revolve around the theme of "night," to music in the middle of the Second World War. He uses the unusual instrumentation of tenor, horn, and strings to create sound effects that range from sparse to sensual, from defiant to melancholic. Antonín Dvořák, on the other hand, gave his wind serenade of 1878 a slightly nostalgic touch, effectively combined with Bohemian dance music. And here, too, there is a festival of tonal colors!

We’re back with another bucket list performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center! New World Symphony is joined by four of the leading singers of our time for Britten’s magnum opus, a moving call for peace.

We’re back with another bucket list performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center! Three of the world’s most celebrated singers—Christine Goerke, Ian Bostridge and Roderick Williams—join forces for Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem. Haydn’s unfinished D Minor Quartet conveys the composer’s power and ingenuity at his advanced age; Britten’s ephemeral, distinctive Quartet No. 3 contains a multitude of colors and contrasts; and Mendelssohn’s F Minor Quartet exudes anguish and poetic melancholy, having been written soon after the death of his sister Fanny and just two months before his own passing.

Tenor Nicholas Phan is well-known to PCMS audiences from Emerging Voices, our 2020 special project that explored themes of social connection and identity through art song. “An artist who must be heard” (NPR), Phan joins ECCO—the “exciting, conductorless band of strings” (The New Yorker) —for a performance of Britten’s surrealistic and evocative song cycle Les Illuminations, set to poems by Arthur Rimbaud. The program also features John Adams’s seminal Shaker Loops and William Grant Still’s Danzas de Panama, based on a collection of Panamanian folk tunes.

A man in the midst of a personal crisis in his life: Gustav von Aschenbach is very successful professionally, but a vague sense of yearning drives him to search for something new and mysterious – he therefore decides to travel to Venice. In 1973 and based on a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, Benjamin Britten set to music author Thomas Mann‘s famous novella. Piper’s work has masterfully translated the storyline into theatrical images, and with his opera, the British composer surprised with a many-colored and exotic sounding work.

Where will you be in ten years? Stephanie Childress answers in an interview on meettheartist.online: She thinks that she works with music together with good colleagues, and plays an active role in changing the education in art and music. Because, she says, the earlier you encounter art, the better. It is not a question of educating more musicians, but that everyone should have the opportunity to experience, for example, the classical music – and that is what she wants, to bring classical music and art to as many people as possible. French-British Stephanie Childress herself played the violin as a child. She is not from a musical family, but from a home where all kinds of activities were supported and Tina Turner and David Bowie were listened to. She didn't really want to be a musician, but then she started going to rehearsals for operas instead of classes at school, Britten and Strauss heard, and then she was sold. She continued with the violin, and it provided a foundation for her to begin conducting studies. Today, she has already achieved part of her dream, i.a. conducted at the Glyndebourne opera in England – which is praised as one of the best Mozart interpreters – and was assistant conductor at St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in the USA, as well as 1st guest conductor at the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra from season 24/25. And touring all over the world until then.

Vaughan Williams didn’t like to talk about the inspiration for his Fourth Symphony, and he didn’t need to, because the music speaks louder than any words. Raw, explosive and driven by unstoppable emotional force, this is music on the edge, written as Europe fell under the shadow of war. Not what you expected from Vaughan Williams? Well, Chief Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth loves to find unexpected connections and tell compelling musical stories. Every season, the chamber concerts of the hr Symphony Orchestra stop off at the Lauterbach Hohhaus Concerts - this time with a musical program that inspires the imagination. Robert Schumann's famous "fairy tales" are of course not to be missed. But the "Phantasy Quartet" by the British composer Benjamin Britten, the early piano quartet movement by the late romantic Gustav Mahler and chamber music miniatures by August Klughardt and Paul Juon also create a fairytale atmosphere.

The music captivates with large, mixed ensembles and with both great emotion and humor. Dvorak is perhaps history's first and greatest National Romantic composer. His tonal language is inspired by the late romanticism of Wagner and Liszt, but he combines it with catchy folk melodies, inspired by Czech folk music. When he wrote the string quintet at the age of 34, he was well on his way to becoming a well-known and loved name throughout Europe.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra, its future chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä and Janine Jansen join forces in Britten’s Violin Concerto. The orchestra also performs Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 and music by Dowland and Purcell.

It has garnered acclaim on several international tours, as well as from eminent conductors including Sir Simon Rattle and current Berlin Philharmonic Chief Conductor, Kirill Petrenko.

Sunday Classics 2024-2025 - German National Orchestra

We are very pleased to welcome the brilliant German National Orchestra, featuring the very best young players performing in Germany.  They will be conducted by the all-round phenomenon Wayne Marshall who will also be soloist in the sensational blend of jazz and classical music in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.  The concert will begin with Benjamin Britten’s much loved Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra, with its rousing finale, and then the second half of the programme will feature a performance of one of the most popular works ever composed by a British composer – Gustav Holst’s The Planets with its ominous, tantalising rhythms of Mars, the beauty of Venus, the grandeur of Jupiter and the mysterious ethereal music describing Neptune that finishes the work.  This concert, highlighting three of the most popular pieces of music ever composed, is not to be missed.

“With phenomenal expressive flexibility, the Vertavo moved from warmest sensuality to knife-edge brittleness,” declares The Guardian. Since their founding in 1984, the Vertavo String Quartet has captivated audiences the world over, winning Norway’s Grieg Prize as well as taking First Prize, the Audience Prize, and the Critics’ Prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The quartet has toured extensively throughout Europe, the US, and Japan, and the group’s collaborations have included pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Leif Ove Andsnes, clarinetist Sabine Meyer, and violinist and violist Isabelle van Keulen. Their 2000 recording of Debussy and Grieg quartets received the Diapason d’Or.

Approaching Mozart’s music with a presence that is “elegantly unruffled” (The New York Times), Conrad Tao illuminates the subtleties of his forebear’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 20. For the young Polish composer Lutosławski, threads of local folk music and lessons from centuries past converge to make his Concerto for Orchestra an ear-tickling marvel of mid-century modernism. An interlude from Benjamin Britten’s breakthrough opera provides another angle of emotional mastery from a musician wise beyond his years.

One can only understand that this is the 40th anniversary of the Vertavo by knowing that these Norwegian women began winning contests when they were barley teenagers. They bring their energy, precision and charisma to the fore in a concert along with Garrick Ohlsson. They will play one of the Mozart piano concertos that work with just a string quartet, along with the brilliant Dvorak piano quintet. The Vertavos alone will perform Britten's Second Quartet.

The evening's repertoire will feature a selection of classical masterpieces, including George Fredric Handel's Concerto Grosso no. 1, op. 6 HWV 319, Francesco Manfredini's Concerto for 2 trumpets, Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for two trumpets in C major, RV 537, Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony, and Felix Mendelssohn's Double concerto for violin and piano. This concert will highlight the exceptional skills of our trumpeters, Bill Takacs and David Lough, with the double trumpet concertos of Manfredini and Vivaldi, and will also feature a thrilling performance of Mendelssohn's Double concerto by Annie Chalex Boyle and Daniel Del Pino.
