Beginning with Andrew Norman's Sabina, written in response to an ecstatic experience watching the sun rise in an ancient Roman cathedral, and moving through the upward gaze of Hildegard von Bingen's antiphon to divine wisdom, the program concludes with Mozart's Divertimento in F Major, the very spirit of levity and brilliance.

The practice of excerpting suites from the orchestral music in operas began with Rameau, who remarked that people seemed to enjoy the orchestral music more than the opera!

Artistic Director Daria Adams curates a one-hour program of four pieces by living composers, whose works look back in some way, then weaves them together with their historical counterparts. This leads to some fascinating juxtapositions, such as a song by Hildegard von Bingen from 1100 A.D with a work for strings and harpsichord by Michi Wiancko from 2021. Daria has paired Elizabethan ­era songs by John Dowland, Italian madrigals by Gesualdo, and a Bourree by J.S. Bach with modern counterparts by Wiancko and Caroline Shaw.

Spanning more than 800 years, the works include 12th century German Saint Hildegard Von Bingen’s “O Virtus Sapientiae”; Britten’s lovely Simple Symphony, rife with sophisticated orchestration; the compact but lively 10th Symphony in B Minor written by a teenaged Mendelssohn; Hindemith’s compelling Five Pieces for Strings; and Greig’s popular Holberg Suite, which sits at the intersection of baroque-style dance and Nordic melodic harmonies and treatments.

The Philharnonia invites you into Gustav Mahler’s world – a world saturated with orchestral colour.  

Since it was founded in 1945, the Philharmonia has given many outstanding performances of Mahler’s epic, all-embracing symphonies. In the orchestra’s 80th anniversary season, ‘superb’ (Opera Now) conductor Kent Nagano takes to the podium for the great Resurrection Symphony, scored for a large orchestra, two solo singers and chorus.

Alongside pianist Julian Riem, she presents a unique program inspired by her album Femmes , which spans nine centuries of female musical creation. From the German mystic poet Hildegarde von Bingen to the eclectic and innovative Lera Auerbach, by way of Lili and Nadia Boulanger, this concert highlights numerous female composers, ranging from emblematic figures to surprising discoveries.
