Composer and violist Jessica Meyer has a keen ear for ensemble color, and her friends in Orpheus are ready to dispatch her newly commissioned Cartes Postales.

Two masterpieces of French late Romanticism form the core of the second chamber concert program: Ernest Chausson’s Piano Quartet in A major, Op. 30, marked by rich tonal colors and expressive melodic writing, is paired with César Franck’s Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 14, whose dramatic intensity and radiant sonority make it a pinnacle of Romantic chamber music.

This September, ERSO welcomes back conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier, whose program of French music received wide acclaim in March 2025. Once again, Tortelier will explore the rich world of 19th-century French composers, beginning with the overture to Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, a pioneer of modern orchestration. Marcel Johannes Kits will perform a rare gem of the cello repertoire: the concerto by Édouard Lalo. The evening will conclude with one of the best-known works by the short-lived composer Ernest Chausson—his Symphony in B-flat major.

For the first concert of this new season, Clemens Schuldt invites us to a vibrant celebration of Romantic Europe, whose stunning crescendo opening the Tannhäuser overture sets the tone! The Orchestra shines as it unfolds the leitmotifs of Wagner's sixth opera: a universal conflict between eroticism and moral duty. Canada's rising violin star, Kerson Leong, transforms this dramatic intensity into symbolist intimacy with Chausson's Poème , the composer's most emblematic work. The score is inspired by a fantastical short story by Turgenev, in which a melody played on the violin creates a spell.

Playing in a piano trio is one of the most demanding chamber music challenges, because the ability to listen and to rein in one's own ego are, even more so than in larger ensembles, the basic prerequisites for a successful interpretation. TaSte-Re (the name is formed from the initials of the participating musicians) has dedicated itself to this artistic balancing act for many years. And even the most important composers have always been tempted to prove themselves in this difficult genre. Joseph Haydn, with more than 30 works, pioneered the genre. The German and French Romantics added further milestones: Mendelssohn's C minor Trio is among the most popular of all time, and Chausson's composition achieved a beautiful synthesis of Romantic tradition and dazzling Impressionism.

Goosby is acclaimed for the sensitivity and intensity of his musicianship alongside his determination to make music more inclusive and accessible, as well as bringing the music of under-represented composers to light. After making his debut with the Jacksonville Symphony at age nine, he performed with the New York Philharmonic at age 13 on a Young People’s Concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and became the youngest recipient ever to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition.

As a woman in the 19th century, the French composer Mélanie Hélène Bonis was only able to compose and publish pieces under the gender-neutral pseudonym "Mel Bonis". Having received little musical encouragement as a child and later being prevented from continuing her education by marriage and family obligations, Bonis repeatedly turned to composing on her own and published over 300 works. Her Suite en forme de valses exists in various arrangements made by the composer herself. In addition to two versions for piano solo and piano four hands, Bonis rewrote the work for orchestra and left behind a suite of three dance-like movements: Ballabile, Interlude et Valse lente and Scherzo-Valse .

Ludwig van Beethoven's sixth symphony was named by the composer himself as the "Pastoral Symphony", as he described his love for the countryside in it. Ernest Chausson's romantic song cycle Poème de l'amour et de la mer (Poem of Love and the Sea) describes both the flowers of the sea and the death of love, and in Jean Sibelius's dance intermezzo the shepherd god Pan's hunt for the mountain nymph Echo is set to music. Roberto Gonzalés-Monjas leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Italian baritone Andrè Schuen in this concert where the love for and in nature is the focus.

The young conductor Thomas Guggeis, having sensationally jumped in for his mentor Daniel Barenboim in Berlin and now the General Music Director at the Oper Frankfurt, makes his “academic” debut with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and presents us a symphonic rarity. Alexander Zemlinsky’s Fantasia for Orchestra, Die Seejungfrau (The Mermaid – based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale), conducted by the composer at its 1905 world premiere in Vienna. The composer’s unhappy relationship with his pupil Alma Schindler, who after a passionate affair left him for Gustav Mahler, is reflected in this powerfully sonorous portrayal of the mermaid’s fate. Perhaps because of this personal background, Zemlinsky decided not to perform the piece. It was thought to be lost and was not performed for almost seventy years. Mendelssohn’s Overture to the Fair Melusine is also based on the world of water spirits and tells the story of a close relative of the mermaid. Aigul Akhmetshina also sings of the coming and going of love. Ernest Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer op. 19 links the story of a love affair with the atmosphere of the sea.

Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth makes a welcome return to the BBC Symphony Orchestra with music by three masters of orchestral writing. First, the atmospheric prelude to Richard Wagner’s epic tale of Tristan and Isolde, then soprano Niamh O'Sullivan - BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist - debuts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Ernest Chausson's Poem of Love and the Sea. Wagner was a great influence on Chausson, whose 1890 song cycle for soprano and orchestra sets two poems: The Flower of the Waters and The Death of Love by poet Maurice Bouchor. Finally, Hector Berlioz's overture to King Lear, which he wrote on first discovering Shakespeare's tragic play in 1831.

It is a popular romantic theme: the fine line between genius and madness. In Beethoven’s case, all one needs to do is look at the portrait of the agitated artist with tangled hair and crazy eyes, who jots his notes down on paper in a manic creative frenzy and in the face of impending deafness. Wolf was hospitalized twice – and died in the clinic. When Schumann was admitted to Endenich, “melancholy with delusion” was noted as a diagnosis in the admission book. And the Italian Renaissance prince Carlo Gesualdo was not only a gifted composer, but very probably also a murderer. In the chromatic descent at the end of his madrigal, we seem to hear the agony of a guilty man tormented by remorse. The result? Insanely brilliant music!

Anne-Marie McDermott, “a pianist who balances qualities of excitement and spontaneity with clarity and elegance” (New York Times), reunites with the SPCO for the first time since their fruitful collaboration at the 2022 Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado. McDermott will lead the orchestra once again in a world premiere of Chris Rogerson’s Samaa', a new expansion of his work by the same name that was previously recorded in Colorado. Two chamber works by French composers showcase the piano in chamber ensembles — an impressionistic concerto with strings by Ernest Chausson and a sextet with winds by Francis Poulenc that pendulates between liveliness and elegy.

South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim — the youngest person ever to win the gold medal in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition — joins returning guest conductor Tugan Sokhiev to perform one of the greatest, most popular, and most virtuosic works in the repertoire: Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3, which the composer himself played with the BSO in 1919 and 1935. Sokhiev also leads a rare gem of a piece: French composer Ernest Chausson’s passionate one and only symphony. The Symphony in B-flat (1890) was a favorite of former BSO Music Director Charles Munch, and the BSO last performed it in 1993.

This Express Concert features SPCO violinist Maureen Nelson as the soloist in Ernest Chausson’s beloved Poème. One moment brooding and mysterious, the next brilliant and sweeping, this work was inspired by “The Song of Triumphant Love,” a short story by the Russian novelist, Ivan Turgenev, about two young men who fall in love with the same woman — a perfect recipe for drama! This version has been arranged for the orchestra by SPCO Principal Horn James Ferree. When Pekka Kuusisto led Louis Farrenc’s Third Symphony a few years ago, the orchestra fell in love with it and has been eager to tackle this bold and exciting masterwork in its signature unconducted fashion.

“The roar of the waves drowns out my sighs / Who knows if this cruel sea will lead her to my heart again?” No one does romance quite like the French, and Chausson’s ‘Poem of love and the sea’ is strong stuff – an incredible musical journey for Domingo Hindoyan and superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva. Add a dash of Wagner at his most sensuous, plus the sunshine and folksong of Dvořák’s happiest symphony, and things are about to get emotional.
