Saint-Saëns Thundering “Organ” Symphony

Berlioz paints a portrait of obsessive love with opium-fueled visions of cinematic realism, featuring haunting ballroom waltzes, a march to the guillotine, and maniacal witches’ dances. Opening the program, Debussy’s tone poem heaves with hazy sensuality, and violinist Carolin Widmann explores nature and love in works by Takemitsu and Chausson.

It is a popular romantic theme: the fine line between genius and madness. In Beethoven’s case, all one needs to do is look at the portrait of the agitated artist with tangled hair and crazy eyes, who jots his notes down on paper in a manic creative frenzy and in the face of impending deafness. Wolf was hospitalized twice – and died in the clinic. When Schumann was admitted to Endenich, “melancholy with delusion” was noted as a diagnosis in the admission book. And the Italian Renaissance prince Carlo Gesualdo was not only a gifted composer, but very probably also a murderer. In the chromatic descent at the end of his madrigal, we seem to hear the agony of a guilty man tormented by remorse. The result? Insanely brilliant music!

Dvořák’s New World Symphony moves with magnificent energies and melodies that feel like home. Hearing it performed by the CSO at Music Hall is a must-have experience. Randall Goosby, a new champion of Florence Price’s solo works, returns for the composer’s Second Violin Concerto plus Chausson’s most popular work. Selections from Wynton Marsalis Blues Symphony trace the blueprints of a quintessential American style.

At age 13, violinist Randall Goosby performed with the New York Philharmonic in a Young People’s Concert earning him a rave review from The New York Times, “…his performance won him a deserved standing ovation for its sheer virtuosity.” The San Diego native returns to take audiences on a musical journey.
