In turn a symbol of freedom, imagination, escape and independence, the vagabond has haunted the imagination of artists and poets as well as philosophers. In the work of Robert Schumann, he takes the form of a lonely minstrel who asks his king for a simple cup of wine; in that of Gustav Mahler, that of a saint who speaks to animals. And while Richard Strauss takes you on nocturnal wanderings, Francis Poulenc gives you a taste of a painter’s Parisian ‘vie de bohème’.

In the intricate weave of sounds that make up a baroque ensemble, the lute is central. It’s fitting, then, that French-American lutenist Thomas Dunford is at the centre of some of the most exciting early music-making of the moment. A regular collaborator with everyone from Les Arts Florissants to his own band of all-stars, the Jupiter Ensemble, he has been dubbed the ‘Eric Clapton of the lute’ by BBC Music Magazine. It is with great delight that Musica Viva Australia presents Thomas Dunford’s Australian debut.

'Where other children would have nursery rhymes, I’d go to bed to the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert,' recalls Sir Simon Keenlyside, whose father and grandfather were both professional violinists. Those priceless formative years continued when he became a boy chorister, then a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, and set rock-solid foundations for his subsequent career as a wonderfully perceptive concert singer, one of the most exciting operatic performers of modern times.

Hailed as “the most beautiful tenor voice since Luciano Pavarotti” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), tenor Benjamin Bernheim has ignited an opera-world frenzy unlike any in recent years. His electrifying rise has taken him from the world’s greatest stages—the Met, La Scala, the Royal Opera House, Palais Garnier—to historic moments like performing at the closing ceremonies of the Paris Olympics and the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, earning him the title of “France’s new favorite tenor.” (The New York Times). Now, in a rare recital appearance for his Princeton University Concerts debut, Bernheim trades the grand opera house for an intimate chamber setting, bringing his signature artistry to a handpicked program of romance, longing, and nostalgia. From the lush sensuality of Duparc and Chausson to Spanish and South American gems by Mompou, Turina, and Ginastera, the evening culminates in the timeless melodies of Puccini and the poignant beauty of French chanson. No grand sets, no spectacle—just one of the world’s greatest tenors unfiltered, singing his favorite music just for you.

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

Soprano Mary Bevan joins Leeds Song Director Joseph Middleton for an evocative recital built around Elegy, the pair's acclaimed 2025 release on Signum Records.

Born from their programme From Earth to Heaven, Elegy reflects a period of profound personal loss and the healing power of music. Shaped by Bevan’s experience of grieving for her father, the performance traces a moving arc from sorrow to consolation, exploring the mystery of death and the quiet transcendence found in song.

The programme features works by Schubert, Fauré, Mahler, Jeanne Landry, Errollyn Wallen, Pauline Viardot, and others—an intimate journey through mourning, reflection, and renewal. Their previous album Voyages was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award, and their recitals across Europe have earned widespread critical praise.

Cheshire-born soprano Susan Bullock is known for her fearless artistry, powerful stage presence, and the emotional depth she brings to her performances. Alongside pianist Jonathan Fisher, she brings her deep commitment to storytelling and uncompromising honesty to a programme exploring the influences of opera on late Romantic song.

Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder uses the poetry of his lover and muse, Mathilde Wesendonck, inspired by the opera Wagner was writing at the time, Tristan and Isolde. Mirroring the opera’s doomed romance, the song cycle reflects the forbidden nature of the relationship between Wagner and his love.
