Our Rising Stars programme invites outstanding up-and-coming performers to The Queen’s Hall stage. They perform alongside their internationally acclaimed mentors, soprano Louise Alder and pianist James Baillieu. The new recruits for 2026 curate and perform the repertoire for the first half of the concert.

In the intricate weave of sounds that make up a baroque ensemble, the lute is central. It’s fitting, then, that French-American lutenist Thomas Dunford is at the centre of some of the most exciting early music-making of the moment. A regular collaborator with everyone from Les Arts Florissants to his own band of all-stars, the Jupiter Ensemble, he has been dubbed the ‘Eric Clapton of the lute’ by BBC Music Magazine. It is with great delight that Musica Viva Australia presents Thomas Dunford’s Australian debut.

'Where other children would have nursery rhymes, I’d go to bed to the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert,' recalls Sir Simon Keenlyside, whose father and grandfather were both professional violinists. Those priceless formative years continued when he became a boy chorister, then a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, and set rock-solid foundations for his subsequent career as a wonderfully perceptive concert singer, one of the most exciting operatic performers of modern times.

Paris has long been a haven for innovative composers, whose music exists in an endless variety of delightful textures—from Saint-Saëns’s classically elegant trio to Fauré’s tempestuous piano quartet. At the heart of this program is the incomparable soprano Erica Baikoff, who lends her “absolutely beautiful voice” (Bachtrack) to Ravel’s shimmering take on The One Thousand and One Nights.

GRAMMY-winning Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo began performing professionally at the age of 11 and has since appeared in opera, concert, recital, film, and on Broadway. He is the General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia, and the Artistic Director of SongStudio at Carnegie Hall. He has with appeared many of the world’s leading opera companies and orchestras including the Metropolitan Opera, Opera National de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Teatro Real, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble, and NDR at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, among others. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Versailles, Madison Square Garden, The Hollywood Bowl, Kabuki-Za Tokyo, The Guggenheim, The Park Avenue Armory, and Little Island. As a producer, he has created projects for The Paris Opera, The New York Philharmonic, The BBC Proms, WQXR, and St. Ann’s Warehouse among others. Costanzo graduated with honors from Princeton University, and Manhattan School of Music, where he is now on the board of trustees along with being on the board of National Black Theater. A winner of the Met Opera Competition and Operalia, Costanzo also has an Honorary Doctorate from Manhattan School of Music, a History Makers Award from the New York Historical, has been a visiting fellow Oxford University, and a distinguished visiting scholar at Harvard. He has been in a Merchant Ivory film and has a forthcoming book for Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

Anna Carney, voice - Junior Recital

The timeless theme of death and transience has inspired composers throughout history. A narrator guides us through music ranging from Haydn and Verdi to Wagner, Mussorgsky, and Popper. Belgian composer Peeters completes the program with a suite written specifically for the trombone quartet. From hopeful and celestial to dark and ominous, this intimate thematic concert is a poignant reflection on the flow of time.

Launch of the first album by the Innu soprano from Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, Élisabeth St-Gelais, dedicated to the masters of French melody. Entitled Infini after the melody of the French composer, Cécile Chaminade, the album also includes melodies by Bizet, Duparc, Poulenc and Saint-Saëns.

Two musical Dames at the very tops of their respective professions – Dame Sarah Connolly received The King’s Medal for Music in 2023, whilst Dame Imogen Cooper received the late Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 – once again join together in recital as they previously have to considerable acclaim at such venues as the Cheltenham Festival and the Oxford International Song Festival. ‘The warm relationship between both performers came across in their performance and the audience was delighted’, wrote the Henley Standard. The programme includes songs both familiar and unfamiliar , including Loewe’s setting of texts better known from Schumann and examples by the neglected Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck.

The universally admired Swedish artist received the Female Singer of the Year Award at the International Opera Awards in 2018, the same year that she was awarded the title of Court Singer by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Her operatic roles – many of them performed at the Royal Opera House in London or at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as in Sweden and elsewhere – run from Mozart to Puccini, Richard Strauss and Janáček. Her widely ranging programme explores songs from the French, German (or in Weill’s case from his post-German period) and Swedish traditions.

Alexis Ortega Chavez, a tenor and Bachelor of Music student, alongside Ryan Huo, a violinist and Master of Music student, and Collin Jinks, a pianist also pursuing a Master of Music, will grace the stage under the guidance of their esteemed instructors Theresa Brancaccio, Blair Milton, and James Giles. The evening's repertoire includes a selection of poignant and evocative pieces:

- A series of Franz Schubert's masterpieces including "Frühlingsglaube," "Nacht und Träume," "Du bist die Ruh," "Der Zwerg," and "Auf dem Wasser zu singen"

And while Richard Strauss takes you on nocturnal wanderings, Francis Poulenc gives you a taste of a painter’s Parisian ‘vie de bohème’.
