The seventh chamber music concert will offer a cross-section of both less performed and notoriously known composers. The Romanian composer and violinist George Enescu, whose works are inspired by Romanian folk music, is one of the greatest composers of his country. The evening is also dedicated to Dmitri Shostakovich. Two of his works will be heard, one of which is the demanding String Quartet No. 8.

Raphael Attila Vogl demonstrates the diverse sounds of the organ in a program that brings works from Bach to Bruckner to life through impressive transcriptions. The opening piece is Carl Maria von Weber's Overture to "Der Freischütz," which surprises with dramatic contrasts and a romantic sound ideal - in the version for organ, it unfolds with an almost orchestral force. Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto in G major, originally intended for strings, becomes a virtuosic challenge in the organ transcription, emphasizing the clarity and brilliance of the Baroque period. With an excerpt from Max Reger's String Quartet in E-flat major, Vogl adds a chamber music touch that preserves the sonic intimacy of the original while exploring the vastness of the instrument. The conclusion is the finale from Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 - a monumental work whose transcendent power gains even more grandeur in the organ arrangement. Invited by the Dresden Philharmonic.

The first in a multi-year series, this concert centers on Leipzig, Germany, the city where Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked for the last 27 years of life and produced many of his greatest compositions. The program features Bach’s music alongside the works of those who preceded and followed him, spanning the Baroque through the Romantic eras. The chorus will return to Bach’s cantata Jesu, meine Freude, an audience and singer favorite, and perform works by Schütz, Rheinberger, Reger, and the siblings Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.

What would the orchestral sound be without violas? One only has to experience a Mahler symphony to appreciate the slightly darkened, slightly scratchy sound of this often overlooked string group. In this chamber concert, the viola—as it prefers to be called, more elegantly—can be enjoyed in its purest form and up close. Oksana Labach and Igor Tulchynsky of the viola section of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra put their instrument in the spotlight, performing works by Carl Stamitz, Max Reger, Jean Sibelius, and Jean-Marie Leclair. And the occasional addition of a violin to the stage provides an opportunity to marvel at the special character of its bigger sister by comparison.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto sounds soulful, exuberant, and embracing the world. Few celebrate it quite like violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann. The highly acclaimed, exceptional musician even wrote a letter to the late composer some time ago. In it, he wrote: "Dear Ludwig, without your music, life would be poorer." Without Mozart's magical sounds, our lives would also be much poorer. In the antiphon "O Radiant Dawn," which serves as the theme for this Chorage program, Scottish composer James MacMillan moves from the delicate touch of a ray of light to the rich spectrum of colors of the ever-awakening morning. In MacMillan's "A New Song," a setting of Psalm 96, the choral voices, singing a new day to the Lord, build upon a sustained pedal point, which arguably expresses the life-giving foundation of the earth, where the "primordial light" dwells (heard in Mahler's setting). Mendelssohn is still considered an outstanding musical prodigy today. One of his youthful masterpieces is his first string quintet, which he composed at the age of 15. A late work, however, is Bartók's trio "Contrasts". The piece is inspired by melodies from Bartók's homeland of Hungary - sounds that were familiar to him since childhood. Reger's clarinet quintet was his last composition. Homages to his great role models Mozart and Brahms can be heard as well as Reger's mature and masterful harmony.

Join us for an enchanting evening of chamber music at the Chamber Music Workshop Teachers’ Concert, presented by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. The concert will showcase a meticulously curated programme featuring the works of Albert Franz Doppler, Max Reger, and Antonín Dvořák.
