Influenced by Native American folk songs, Black spirituals, and his native Bohemia, Dvořák’s “New World Symphony” whisks audiences away to the vast tapestry of Americana. World Renowned in their own right, the Shaham siblings, foremost violinist Gil and consummate pianist Orli, join the Virginia Symphony to perform a world premiere concerto composed by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail.

And now for something completely different. Our series of intimate afternoon concerts continues with the duo of Section Principal Flute, Rachel Holt, and regular guest harpist Lucy Nolan. This combination of instruments makes for a particularly ethereal and otherworldly sound – great taking a pause from your day and letting the sounds wash over you.

We have a combination of music written especially for flute and harp, and arrangements of well-known pieces, with Rachel and Lucy providing insights into the composers and music throughout the performance. You might not have heard of Pearl Chertok, Jacques Ibert or Marc Bethomieu, but they really were harp specialists and knew how to write for the instrument. But for more familiar sounds we have flute and harp arrangements of Chopin’s famous Minute Waltz and Ashokan Farewell by American folk musician Jay Ungar, based on a Scottish lament.

One of the most captivating artistic voices of our time, Tessa Lark is consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance. Increasingly in demand in the classical realm, in 2020 she was nominated for a GRAMMY® in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. She is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky, delighting audiences with programming that includes Appalachian and bluegrass music. This program will include works by Ysaÿe, Telemann, Bach, and Lark's own arrangements.

Join the Snowbelt Symphony Orchestra for this musical tribute to our veterans. The concert will feature patriotic gems like "Stars and Stripes Forever" and "God Bless America," familiar music by George Gershwin and Aaron Copland, Broadway favorites, and lots more quintessential American music. The highlight of the concert will be the playing of the anthems of the branches of the armed forces to honor those that have made significant sacrifices to defend our country's freedoms and liberties.

Experience a musical celebration like no other at BANDthology, where three of Silicon Valley's premier community bands—the San José Metropolitan Band, San José Wind Symphony, and San Francisco Brass Band—share the stage for the very first time!

Enjoy an afternoon filled with the rich harmonies of a wind ensemble, the vibrant energy of a brass band, the pulse-quickening beat of an explosive percussion section, and much more. Hosted at the Hammer Theatre in Downtown San José, each ensemble will present a unique program, creating an immersive tapestry of sound that spans genres and generations.

We begin our season celebrating America’s 250th birthday, AKA semiquincentennial, with love in the air. The playful and blues-inflected Café Music comes from Detroit-born composer Paul Schoenfield. You will fall in “love at first hear” with Dale’s Romance. Brahms’s Horn Trio is a gorgeous compositional gem.

An Art Institute of Chicago painting inspired Young’s Song of the Lark. Del Aguila’s Herbsttag is an eclectic mix of jazz and South American styles. Thuille’s Sextet has solo and symphonic dimensions along with warm lyricism; a bridge of old and new styles.
