Weaving new works together with original arrangements of music from the 1600s to the present, their PCMS debut program covers a vast timeline that spans from Chick Corea to François Couperin. With their distinctive instrumentation and collective creativity, the ensemble of violinist Alexi Kenney, violist Ayane Kozasa, and cellists Gabriel Cabezas and Paul Wiancko channels beautiful and exhilarating new sounds from over 300 years of music history.

Born in Taiwan and raised in Australia, Ray Chen was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music at age 15 and captured the world’s attention as First Prize winner of both the Yehudi Menuhin and Queen Elizabeth Competitions. Profiled as “one to watch” by The Strad and Gramophone magazines, his profile has grown to be featured in the Forbes list of 30 most influential Asians under 30, and appearances in the TV series Mozart in the Jungle. He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin, once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist, Joseph Joachim.

Enrique Ugarte reveals himself in his three artistic facets: as the conductor of the evening, as a soloist on the accordion – an instrument with which he became European champion – and as the author of all the arrangements you will hear in this concert.

He received his first musical training with the Kiedrich Chorbuben (Kiedrich Boys Choir), after which Andreas Scholl conquered the big stages – but the countertenor always enjoys returning to his roots: A native of the Rheingau region, he has been a long-time guest with us and is at home on stages throughout the region. This year, the celebrated countertenor, together with his wife and artistic partner Tamar Halperin on the piano, will light up the Union Church in Idstein with his singing. He will present an extraordinary program centered around the English folk song tradition, bringing a part of Great Britain's history to life through sound.

Experience the innovative sounds of the Owls string quartet at Cal Performances during the 2024-25 season. This unique ensemble, featuring the creative talents of Alexi Kenney (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), Gabriel Cabezas (cello), and Paul Wiancko (cello), is set to captivate audiences with their original arrangements and deep investment in each piece they perform. The Owls' repertoire for this performance includes a diverse mix of compositions, showcasing works by cellist Paul Wiancko, Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, minimalism pioneer Terry Riley, jazz legend Chick Corea, indie rock duo Trollstilt, and French Baroque composer François Couperin. Highlights of the program include Corea's "Children’s Song No. 12," Wiancko's "Vox Petra" and "When the Night," Ali-Zadeh's "Rəqs," Couperin's "Les Barricades Mystérieuses," Trollstilt's "Ricercar," and Riley's "Good Medicine from Salome Dances for Peace."

Seth Krimsky brings friends to perform Chick Corea’s dreamy early trio, drawn from his piano jazz improvisations. The vibe continues with Herrerías’ intricate and urgent dance rhythms, and a new work by Seth Krimsky himself. Then Brittany Breeden’s quartet of friends explores unique Americana drawn from the Deep South. In At The Octoroon Balls, Wynton Marsalis was inspired by creole musical traditions, translated for string quartet: fiddle reels, hoe downs, jug stomps and marching bands.

A work for seven dancers, Children’s Songs Dance by Jessica Lang takes its name from the music. Set to selections from Children’s Songs by the late American jazz composer Chick Corea, the ballet was created on ABT Studio Company in January 2020 during a residency at The Pocantico Center in Tarrytown, New York. According to Lang, Children’s Songs Dance “draws its inspiration from the transition in life between being a child and becoming an adult, with the goal of never losing the spirit of play.”

As valuable as this treasure is, sometimes the focus on the individual geniuses of Central European music obscures the view of the incredible diversity surrounding it. How many melodies from village and peasant wedding musicians are still to be discovered! In this chamber concert, Angelina Nalbantova from Bulgaria and Nico Gutu from Moldova show us what Eastern Europe, including Romania, as well as Argentina, France, and Spain, have to offer in this broad field. The proximity to improvised jazz is almost always palpable – the focus is on Chick Corea's masterpiece "Spain." Violin and accordion are the flexible instruments, a perfect fit here, as they stand in stark contrast to the large symphony orchestra. Have a good trip out into the wide world!
